WPA CEMETERY RECORDS FOR THE NORTHERN PART OF LEE CO.
The WPA cemetery records were transcribed by the Works Project Administration, Graves Registration Project. The Works Project Administration was a relief program created during the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s. The program provided employment for millions of people during the Great Depression. The records are an excellent source for information about stones that existed 70 years ago, but have since disappeared. These records ARE NOT complete or accurate. Be sure to check for misspellings and for out of order names and to confirm the information through another source.
If cemeteries were walked by these people, they recorded very few stones .. so what were they looking for? At the front of these records is a column for vets buried in named cemeteries .. but there are no entries in that column, but there are a lot of notations of veterans listed. I have also heard that these people never entered a cemetery but found the cemetery information from court house records and newspapers. You will also notice the names recorded are men.IAGenWeb has a new WPA Project which includes all of the counties in Iowa.

It would be a good idea to search for your Lee Co name both places also. Names could have been misspelled or passed over at either site.Compilers for this project are ; Virginia Aldredge, Carolyn Dischier, Faith Foulkrod, Sue Hill, Travis Kinkeade, Kaylynn Loveland, Rhonda Miller, Nancy Nichols and Sally Youngquist
