Evening fire destroyed over $100,000 worth of property. Principal suffers are
Woooster & Temple, Marcourt & Page and Messrs. ustin, Morrison, McLearing and
Huskamp.
February 17, 1858
From the Keokuk Journal. A man named MAYLET was picked up in the street on
Friday evening, while laboring under a heavy pressure of liquor, and confined in
the calaboose. He represents himself as being a Mormon preacher and has in his
possession an Elder's certificate, from His Highness, BRIGHAM YOUNG
Oct 6,1867
The car shops of the Desmoines Vally Railroad Company were destroyed by fire.The
watchman was burned to death. The loss is about $35,000, which is fully insured.
Jan 31, 1869
Henry Walters an old Keokuk citizen was murdered by four men who shot him as he
was getting on his horse. He was then beat with clubs and stones. Two men were
arrested on suspicion.
April 5, 1869
A LITTLE GIRL-CHILD, of Swedish parents, named Aber Christina, died from the
effects of rat poison, at No. 112 Carroll street, yesterday afternoon.

Thursday, Nov. 5, at Christ Church, by Rev. F. W. Ewer, Mr. S. S. CURTIS, of
Keokuk, Iowa, to KATE, second daughter of J. D. Bird, of this City.
A fight occurred between James Alyward and Thomas Connor which resulted in the
death of Connor. Alyward was held to bail of $5000.
August 1879
Judge J. L. Rice, of Keokuk died last week. He bequeathed $10000.00 to the
Library Asssociation for a new building. $5000.00 to Willliams College of MA and
1000.00 to St. John's Episcopal Church of Keokuk.
