A CEMETERY WITHOUT A NAME
Erma Derosear researched, compiled and submitted the following story.
A Cemetery Without A NameIn 1993 a group of archeologists from Iowa City were doing research for historical sites and cemeteries in this area prior to the building of the Avenue of the Saints. About one-half mile north of Argyle, they talked to a land owner who told of finding stones when he moved some of the earth around his barn. The previous land owner had destroyed the cemetery in the late 1940's. He had taken the stones of the graves and thrown them into the hog wallows. He sold the farm and moved on.
The team did the archeological work and said there had been 14 graves at this site. Old timers remember the cemetery but no one knows its name. Could it have been a burying place for early pioneers or the Mormon exodus? We are sure there was an old trail going by this area. We have two maps made by Toby Morrow showing exact location of the site in the Genealogical Department of the Donnellson Library. If anyone has any further information on this cemetery site, we welcome your input. Please contact the Genealogical Department at 500 Park St in Donnellson or send an e-mail to our web site listed above.
