G. E. Franks, former police chief, dies
Guy E. (Mickey) Franks of 125 North Seventh, former chief of police, died oat
1:30 a.m. today in St. Joseph hospital where he had been a patient since January
17. He had been in failing heath for six months.
The son of Christian and Sarah Louise Bird Franks, he was born February 13, 1891
in Keokuk.
A veteran of World War I, he served in France with the U.S. Army. A member of
the Keokuk police force since 1922 until his retirement in 1954, he served as
detective, assistant chief and chief of the department.
Marine engineer
A former marine engineer, he was employed by the government at Florence,
Alabama, and on the upper Mississippi.
On June 20, 1920, in Keokuk he married Beulah Blackburn Perry. On September 1,
1949 he married Violet E. Cochran.
He was a member of the Amerian Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, Eagles
and World War I Veterans Barracks.
Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Delmar (Frances) Carr of Keokuk, three
grandsons, Michael, with the U.S. Army in Germany, Pfc. Robert with the Marine
Corps in North Carolina and Daniel at home, a grandaughter, Susan at home, and a
sister S.P. Birdie Brown of Denver, Colorado. He was proceded in death by a
brother Charles and a son Richard.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Greaves Mortuary with the Rev
Cecil A. Wells officiating. Burial will be in the National cemetery.
