CHAS. BLACKSMITH
PASSED AWAY SATURDAY
July 20,1985
Charles
(Blechschmidt) Blacksmith was born in Saxony, Germany, Nov. 12, 1848. and
departed this life Saturday, July 20, 1935, at his home in Lee county, having
attained an age of 86 years, 8 months and 8 days. In 1856, at the age of 8 years
he came across the country with his patents who settled in the near community
and the remainder of his life was spent in that vicinity.
Mr.
Blacksmith was a baptized and confirmed member the St Peter's Evangelical church
of Franklin. In 1878 he was united in marriage to Carolyn Reisner who preceded
him in death July 31, 1928. Although no children were born to this union they
performed a Christian duty in helping to raise a number of children. One child,
now Mrs. Gertrude Helm, was received into their home at the age of 14 months and
grew into womanhood in that home. She was always looked upon as a daughter, so
accordingly there survive 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 5 nieces
Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Mr.
Blacksmith was the oldest member of the family and the last to pass away in
death. He was a sincere man and when he realized the end was approaching he
expressed a readiness to pass into Great Beyond. How beautiful that passing
must be when one is prepared to meet the Master.
Funeral
services were held from the St. Peter's Evangelical church or Franklin, Monday
afternoon, Rev. G. O. Martensen officiating. Words of comfort were spoken from
Revelation 14 - 13. Members of the choir sang No Night There, and Over There.
The pall
bearers were: Adolph Blacksmith, George Blacksmith, Edward Blacksmith Joseph
Riebel, Charles Bogert and Andy Grelk Interment was in the Evangelical cemetery
in Franklin.
Those
from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Donald and
daughter and Mrs. Edward Greenwood of Moline, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Werner
of Chicago.

MRS. FREDRICKE BRANDT (Two Obits)

January 27, 1922
Mrs. Fredricke Brandt a respeced and beloved citizen of this vicinity for over
60 years, passed away at her home in Franklin Monday, January 9, 1922 at 11:00
a.m. Aged 87 years, 7 monthes, 8 days. Death was due to old age
Fredericke Riske/Rueske was born June 1, 1834 Branstrap, Germany. She was united
in marriage to Herman Brandt in Nortrup, Germany, April 4, 1858.
The couple came to America in 1859, stopping at New Orleans. they came up the
river in 1860 to Fort Madison where they resided for eleven years,then coming to
farm in Franklin township, two and half miles southwest of West Point, in 1871,
and lived there until 1895 when they retired and moved to Franklin, where the
deceased has made her home
the past twenty-seven years
Deceased is survived by four sons and three daughters: Mrs. H. Timpe and Mrs. J.
Blacksmith of Franklin, H.G. Brandt of West Point, H.H. Brandt of Burlington,
Mrs. Cc. Bergthold of Barren, Wisconsin, B. H. Brandt of Fort Madison, W.H.
Brandt of Julesburg, Colorado. she is also survived by twenty three
grandchildren. Her husband
died 6 years ago
Mrs. Brandt was a faithful christian and was a lifelong memeber of the G.E.
Church of Franklin. She was a dutful and loving wife and mother and a true
neighbor and friend.
Funeral services will be held at the G.E. Church at Franklin, Thursday afternoon
at 2:00 p.m. Rev. P.C. Keineth
will officiate and interment will be made at the Franklin Cemetery

Frederieke Brandt, nee Riske, was born June 1, 1834 at Hanover, Germany where
she was united in marriage
April 4, 1854 with Herman Brandt. They came to America in 1859, to Fort Madison
in 1860. In 1871
bought farm 2 miles NE of here. Retired 1895 to town wehre he died in 1915
She died Jan. 9, 1922 at home of daughter Sophia Blacksmith. Other children are
Mrs. Anna Timpe of
here, Mrs. Chris Bergthold, Barron, Wisconsin, Herman of Fort Madison, Henry of
Burlington, Barny of Fort
Madison, and Wm of Julesburg, Colorado One son, John died in 1896. 23
grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren
Funeral services Thursday p.m. Jan 12, 1922, Rev P.C Kelnath conducting the
services. Interment in church
cemetery beside her husband (note: John died in 1899)

Herman D. Brandt was born May 1, 1828, in Nortrup, Hanover, Germany,
He was united in marriage to Fredericke Riske in Nortrup, Germany, April 4,
1858, who survives, as on
April 30, at 4:00 o'clock a.m death called him from a long and continuous
sickness
In 1859 they immigrated to America and landed at New Orleans, from where they
came to Fort Madison the year following and stated there eleven years, when they
moved on a farm three miles northeast from
here and remained until the year 1895, since which time they resided at the
residence where he died
The union was blessed with three sons and three daughters. the oldest son, John,
departed life July 12, 1899; the other children are; Mrs. Henry Timpe and Mrs.
John Blacksmith of here; Mrs Chris Bergthold of Des Moines; Herman on the home
pace northeast of here; Henry of Keokuk, Barney of near Fort Madison and William
of Ovid, Colorado,
all being here and present at the funeral which occurred Sunday afternoon at the
G.E. Church
Rev. Fr. Deuschle officiating. Deceased also leaves 23 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. As noted, with the exception of one day, the 87th birthday
had been reached
Mrs. James Jackson of Burlington, a neice, attended the funeral
