FORWARD

On Thursday evening, August 7, 1975 at 8:00 P.M. a meeting was held at the Lions Building to formulate plans for the Bicentennial Year. Officers elected were Richard Conklin, President; Wm. Anderson, Vice President; Margaret Steinbeck, Secretary; and Jane Blakely, Treasurer.

This particular year, 1976, is the 200th birthday of our nation and to keep this fresh in the minds of everyone, the committee outlined a program for the year.

January - The emphasis was to buy flags.
February - Cherry Pie and Ice Cream.
March - Lenten Season.
April - Selling and planting of trees.
May - Memorial Day Park Services.
June - Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet..
July - Tractor Pull, Horse Show and Fire Works.
August - See America, Watermelon Day, Boost Rubio 75th Jubilee.
September - Demollition Derby and Drawing of the Chevette.
October - Style Show.
November - Armistice Day - Dedication of Bell in Park.

To be recognized as a Bicentennial community, one of the projects was a history of Richland to be compiled into a book.

This book is partly compiled of family histories and pictures provided within the community and, probably, will revive many memories for some, and for others it will provide a glimpse into the past to which they have heard others make reference. The  committee has had the cooperation of many people and wishes to express their thanks to each of them. However, a special emphasis should be given to the many hours of Mary Wolcott, Sandy Hoskins and Debbie Archer for typing and compiling of the book; and to Myra Nordyke for helping with incomplete names and dates on pictures. Also thanks to Dale Sasseen who took many of the advertising pictures.

It is the wish that each and everyone will enjoy reading this book and will be proud to say "Richland, Iowa. My Home."
