JOHNSON COUNTY IAGenWeb Project

Update of the Johnson County IAGenWeb Site
http://iagenweb.org/johnson/ (our new website address)

As of 11 June 2008 the website has been changed over to the IAGenWeb server instead of the Rootsweb/Ancestry.com server. Your Webmaster Harvey Henry had the able assistance of IAGenWeb Welcome Hostess Constance Diamond who actually made the many changes from her computer at her home in Oregon. Many e-mails back and forth and a long telephone conversation made the long distance effort possible.

The Friends of IAGenWeb exist for the sole purpose of funding The IAGenWeb Project, which is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to gathering and presenting Iowa genealogical and historical information for free, online access by researchers.

The IAGenWeb Project was founded on August 6, 1996, by a few people dedicated to having genealogical information free on the Internet. Today The IAGenWeb Project consists of 92 volunteers working to transcribe data, develop web sites and respond to questions on the 99 county sites.

Programs funded by the Friends of IAGenWeb have enabled us to achieve new heights in the gathering and presentation of genealogical information. They include:

·                 Iowa Genealogy Boards that now have thousands of names in obituaries, news items, biographies and more.

·                 Gravestone Photo Project that contains more than 364,000 photos in Iowa and 4166 in Johnson County (1884 during the first week of June 2008).

·                 Search engines that can search all of the county boards.

ICGS GRAVESTONE PHOTO PROJECT
Project coordinators: Harvey Henry and Joni Hindman ICGS members

The Iowa City Genealogical Society (ICGS) has established a Gravestone Photo Project (GPP) with a goal of enlisting volunteers to complete the photographing of gravestones in all cemeteries in Johnson County and then posting them on the GPP webpages.

A presentation of using of the GPP website was made by Webmaster Harvey Henry at the ICGS meeting on the 31st of May 2008.

The handout for that presentation is available on our website at: http://iagenweb.org/johnson/GPPhandout/GPPhandout.htm

A  record keeping and information log is available at:
http://iagenweb.org/johnson/ICGS_GPP.htm

Clickable links to each Johnson County cemetery are in the information log allowing for determining the names of those whose gravestones have already been posted. Printouts of the log will be provided to volunteers along with a copy of the record of gravestones as of about 1985.

Volunteers are encouraged to contact either coordinator for assistance in joining in the work of this project.
