The Church of God was organized in Fremont township in 1854 by M. F. Snavely, who was scalded to death with many others when returning from a general conference in Chicago. This was the first accident to occur on the Rock Island railroad. It took place near Joliet, Ill., in November, 1854. Other pastors were J. P. Shaw, Mr. Lininger, H. Murry, Abraham Holland, J. M.
