Obituary

Edwin Douglas Hale, 77, of Dallas, TX, peacefully passed away after a short illness on December 28, 2019 with his family by his side.

He was born on April 8, 1942 to Merle and Mary Hale in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and grew up in Iowa City, Iowa. Ed was a graduate of the University of Iowa and went on to receive his law degree from the University of Denver. He had a passion for estate law and spent his career as an expert in the life insurance industry training and coaching on business succession planning.

Ed's career took him to Colorado, Indiana and Texas and he developed a sense of community wherever he lived. But all who knew him would agree he was a Hawkeye at heart! He lived and breathed the University of Iowa and flew the "I" flag on game days. Win or lose, Ed was proud of the Hawks! His favorite sort was golf and enjoyed both playing and watching it. He even built his own clubs. Another favorite pastime was auto racing. Ed absolutely loved cars and owned many impressive, yet sometimes impractical, collector vehicles throughout the years. He later built models of each car to remember them.

Nicknamed "Coach" by hundreds of kids, including his own, Ed coached many sports his children were involved in through the years.
Ed is survived by his family - Sandy of Dallas, TX; sister Marsha of Lake Oswego, OR; son John (Dawn) of Columbus, OH; daughter Amanda (Wes) of Fort worth, TX; daughter Andi of Dallas, TX; son Doug (Dana) of Denver, CO; and daughter Meghan of New York, NY. He was the proud grandfather of 6 grandchildren; Hannah, Jack, Aaron, Nick, Addison, and Daphne.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, located at 7990 President George Bush Turnpike, Dallas, TX. A burial ceremony will follow in Indiana in May 2020. Donations may be made to the Merle L. Hale Faculty Endowment Fund at the University of Iowa.

Special thanks to the staff of Medical City Dallas Hospital for their care during his final days.
Ted Dickey West Funeral Home in Dallas, Texas has charge of arrangements.
