Heart attack claims Sumner County Detective Richard Corso
by Cheryl Tatum
Sumner
County lost a dedicated and outstanding law enforcement officer with
the death of Richard Corso, his colleagues say.Corso, 60 died early
Friday morning of an apparent heart attack. He had been employed
with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department since 1988.
“Richard
was a fine Christian man and an outstanding officer,” said Sheriff J.D.
Vandercook, who worked with Corso for about 13 years. “He came to this
department in 1988 as a deputy when I became sheriff. He had been
with the Gallatin Police Department for eight years,” Vandercook said.
In
1994, Corso was promoted to detective and served in that position until
his death. “He was an excellent role model for our younger officers,”
Vandercook added. Captain Don Linzy, head of the department’s
criminal investigation division, under whom Corso worked, said if
everyone was like Corso, there would be no need for law
enforcement. “Richard was one of the nicest people you would ever
meet. I never heard him raise his voice in all the time I worked
with him,” Linzy said.
Vandercook said much of Corso’s caseload was
related to sex crimes, and he had an excellent working relationship
with the Department of Children’s Services in working to protect child
victims. “He was a very good detective,” Linzy said. Linzy
added Corso was usually the first to work and never called in
sick. “To everyone, he was a bright spot in our day. He
never had anything bad to say,” Linzy said.
Corso lived
in Hendersonville with his wife Amy. Funeral serves were Monday
at the Miracle Tabernacle Church in Hendersonville with burial at the
Beech Cemetery. Pastor Sam Corley III officiated.
Active pallbearers were family members while honorary pallbearers were
officers and employees of the Sumner County Sheriff’s
Department. Detective Corso was preceded in death by his
parents, Joseph and Ethel Corso. Beside his wife, he is survived
by sons, Tim and Mitchell Corso; brothers Robert, Michael and Joseph
Corso; sister, Wencie Reynolds; and six grandchildren.
