Hardin Township

The First School

Hardin township was organized in 1858. It was originally included in Washington township. It was named for William Hardin who lived in Section 32 in 1858.

The first school was taught in a log cabin on Section 35 by Miss Margaret Montgomery (Mrs. Roop of Washington township in 1882) she received $1.50 per week and “boarded” with the pupils. The first school was a frame house built on Section 34; it cost about $125, which was raised by subscription.
