Iowa City Genealogical Society

The Iowa City Genealogical Society, in Johnson County, Iowa, was founded in 1967 by a group of people interested in tracing their roots and in helping others who wanted to research family history. As the Society developed, additional, broader objectives evolved to include generally promoting genealogy by preserving and disseminating historical data, acquiring genealogical references, and supporting the State Historical Society Library in Iowa City at 402 Iowa Avenue.

Regular meetings are held on the last Saturday of each month at the LDS Church Family History Library, 2730 Bradford Drive, Iowa City, Iowa. Meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. The meetings usually include a presentation on a genealogical topic of general interest.

ICGS publishes a newsletter ten times a year  A typical newsletter contains our president's message, announcements of ICGS meetings as well as conferences and national meetings, a short description of queries received, information on current projects of ICGS, a listing of new additions to the State Historical Society Library, and often some general genealogical news items and tips.

The Iowa City Genealogical Society has published many Johnson County records, such as marriage records from 1839 to 1903, gravestone records of all cemeteries, indexes for some county histories, early land map records and the 1840 and 1856 censuses. The publications (list attached)are available through the Iowa Genealogical Society in Des Moines.

The Iowa City Genealogical Society library collection is housed in the State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) Library in Iowa City, and is available to patrons during regular business hours. The SHSI Library is open Thursday through Friday, 12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Other libraries in Iowa City which have somewhat smaller genealogical holdings are the Iowa City Public Library, University of Iowa Main Library, and the University of Iowa Law Library. Another useful source is the local Church of the Latter Day Saints, which features many records on microfiche and CD-ROM.
