Fountain Pen, Ring Escaped Japs — Machinist's Mate First Class Harold Richardson, right, wouldn't take a good deal for two little items he is showing here to Boatswain's Mate Second Class [Leonard] Junior White. The fountain pen Junior is examining and the ring on Richardson's hand—his Newton high school ring—went with him through nearly four years of Japanese imprisonment. He managed to hide them from the Japs. Richardson is one of the few Americans to see an atomic bomb light on Japan. He saw the one hit at Nagasaki, though unaware at the time it was such a momentous bombing performance. (Story on Page 1.)
