Farmer; Sec. 28; P. O. Colfax; born in Adams Co., Penn. in 1815; came to Stark Co., Ohio in 1826; thence to LaGrange Co., Ind. in 1846; thence to Jasper Co. in 1855. Has 107 acres of land, valued at $45 per acre. He married Miss Rebecca PATTERSON in 1842; she was born in Wayne Co., Ohio in 1820. They have nine children - Sylvester, Jeremiah, Emily J., Alfred C., Celistia F., Julius, Jessie A., Duncan D. and Freddie. Republican; they are members of the M. E. Church. He has held the office of School Director.

Dry Goods, Groceries, Boots and Shoes, south side of square, Greencastle; born in Hampshire Co., Va. in 1821; came to Des Moines Co., Iowa in 1837, and to this county in 1853. Owns his store and residence and ten acres of timber. He married Miss Urbana LEE in 1847. She was born in Henry Co., Ind. in 1828; died in Greencastle March 19, 1876, leaving five children - Charles W., John M., Elizabeth S., Cassius R. and Lois V. Republican; member of the M. E. Church; belong to Des Moines Annual Conference, having preached the Gospel for twenty-five years in Iowa, but lost his health. Owned a fine farm in this township, which he sold after losing his wife.

SECRIST in 1846. She was born in Bedford Co., Penn. in 1827. They have five children - Theodore A., Mary C., Emma R., Lincoln E. and Horace S. Is a Republican; Mr. and Mrs. BAKER are members of the Evangelical Association; he being a Pastor of the same church. When he came here, there were but three houses in sight; only one house on the road to Des Moines. He has an orchard of 1,000 bearing apple trees, and other fruits, 300 of which were planted fifteen years ago; has 160 acres of swamp land, which are very desirable pasture; and as valuable as good farm land.

Battery in 1851; participated in the battle of Pea Ridge; then discharged; enlisted in the 3rd I. V. Cav. in 1863; participated at Louisburg, Ala., Monta Valley, Ala., Ebenezer Church, Ala., Selma, Columbia, and others; mustered out at Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 9, 1866.

She was born ion Muskingum Co., Ohio in 1835. They have one child - Lyman M., born in 1870. Is a Republican. Mr. B. and wife are members of the M. E. Church.

She was born in Virginia in 1829. They have eleven children - Louis H., Mahlon S., John H., Charity E., Joseph H., Phoebe A., Charles E., Franklin, George E., Jessie W., James E. Is a Republican. Has held the offices of Sub-Director, Supervisor, Assessor, Constable and Township Trustee. He is a member of the M. E. Church and A., F. & A. M. Lodge, No. 59 at Newton.

Married Sarah A. LEE in 1851. She was born in Northampton Co., Penn. in 1823. They have two children - Adelaide I., born July 14, 1860, and Elizabeth J., born March 29, 1862. Mr. C. is a Democrat. Has been Township Trustee and Supervisor. He is a Universalist and she is a Lutheran. He is also a member of the A., F. & A. M. Lodge, No. 59 in Newton, a member of Beaver Encampment at Hazelton, Penn., Geble Chapter, No. 12; Master of Grange three years; Knight Templar, No. 22; member of I. O. O. F., No. 73 at Newton. He run a saw-mill at Alma Grove, Adamson Grove, Atkins' Grove and Plummer's Grove; made all he has by his own exertions; formerly an engineer in the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, running an engine to hoist coal.

CHISLER, Isaac
Farmer, Sec. 25; P. O. Colfax; born in Carroll Co., Ohio in 1826; came to Jasper CO. in 1850; has 340 acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. Married Miss Emily PATTEN in 1847. She was born in Virginia in 1828, died in March 1874, leaving six children - David H., Adeline, John A., Emery B., Ellis B., and Howard O. He married Eliza BENNET in September 1874. She was born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio in 1834. Republican; she is a member of the Methodist Church. Mr. CHISLER has made all he has, not having even a horse or cow on coming to Iowa, nor having so much as a dollar given to him.

Married Catherine CORMANY Sept. 20, 1843; she was born in Ohio in 1823, died in Sept. 1860, leaving three children - Henry M., Alonzo, and Martha A.; the latter died Sept. 21, 1860. He is a Republican. Has been School Director and Township Trustee two terms. They are members of the Evangelical Association. Enlisted in the 40th I. V. I. in August 1862; was detailed to regimental hospital for two years, and St. John's hospital seven months; cooked for his company three months at Fort Smith, thence to Fort Gibson two months, where he was mustered out in 1865.

Marries Miss Marian YORK in 1842. She was born in North Carolina in November 1820. They have six children - Eli E., Mary J., Elizabeth A., Sarah J., Charles L. and Julia E. Republican; has held the office of Township Trustee; he is a member of the Christian Church. His brother-in-law, A. J. BERRY, came to this county at the same time, and at one time, owned 1,900 acres of land, in Sherman and Poweshiek Tps.; in 1868, he sold out and went to Texas; first to the Cherokee country, and then to the Chickasaw; he raised a large family, and at one time was considered the wealthiest man in the county.

DOUD, P. H.
Postmaster, Justice of the Peace and Notary Public, Greencastle; born in Vermont, Sept. 5, 1800. Moved to Tioga Co., Penn. in 1818, thence to Jefferson Co., Ohio in 1853, and to this county in 1854. Owns house and lot, and office, Block 13, lots 3 and 4, and a half interest in flouring mill with 1 1/2 acres of ground. He married Louisa HAYDEN in 1824. She was born in Hampshire Co., Mass. in 1804. They have five children - Helen M., Mary A., Eugene S., Adelia E. and Malcolm P. Mr. D. is a radical Republican. Has held offices of County Commissioner, and President of Achool Board. In 1859, he went to California, remaining there four years engaged in mining; his oldest son being there engaged in the wholesale dry goods business. Greencastle was laid out in 1856, by a man named Albert Ship (now a resident of Shelby Co.) Mr. D. taking seven lots.

DUNCAN in 1852. Mrs. D.'s maiden name was WHITNEY. Mr. D. enlisted as Second Lieutenant in Co. B, 13th I. V. I. in 1861; killed in battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862; buried on battle field; leaving two children, Louisa K. and Edward L.

EDWARDS, Milton M.
Farmer; Sec. 9; P. O. Greencastle; born in Pike Co., Missouri in 1820; came to Adams Co., Illinois in 1827; thence to Jasper Co. in 1847. Has 230 acres of land, valued at $45 per acre. Married Miss Ann HENDERSON in 1841. She was born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1821. They have eight children - Jonathan, George W., Charles C., James M., Mary A., Ellen E., Albert M., Armilda A. Democrat. Has held all of the School offices, Road Supervisor, Township Trustee. At the time of Mr. Edward's coming to Jasper Co., there were no settlers on the forks of the Skunk River and Indian Creek, except Mr. HAMLIN; it being necessary to go to Oskaloosa and Lynn Grove, ten miles, and at one time to Apple Grove by water.

FERGUSON, Joseph
Farmer; Sec. 20; P. O. Colfax; born in Harrison Co., Ohio in 1819; moved to Adams Co., Illinois in 1841, and to this county in 1855. Owns 240 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. Married Anna V. PHAYER in 1865. She was born in Guernsey Co., Ohio in 1838. They have three children - Minnie M., Samuel and James F. Is a Republican in politics. Came from Illinois with an ox team and about $100 in money.

FISH, Edward G.
Farmer and proprietor of coal mines; Sec. 26; P. O. Colfax; born in Chambersburg, Penn. in 1837; came to Richland Co., Ohio in 1839; to this county in 1856. Owns his home farm of eighty acres, valued at $60 per acre; also, Black Heath Mines, fifty-seven acres of coal lands, with a bed of coal five feet eight to seven feet thick; discovered by himself, opened out and first coal raised August 10, 1876. Married Edith M. PEASE in 1864. She was born in Mansfield, Ohio, August 6, 1839. They have two children - Jessie M. and Gaylord B. Republican. Mr. FISH was one of the first prospecting party in the Territories of Oregon and Idaho, and passed with the first prospecting party from Colorado to Oregon; thence to Passerville, Idaho; was one of the party discovering the mines at Boise River. He with a party of others, laid out Boise City with ropes on a Sunday afternoon, each taking corner lots. Left Happy Camp with a party of twelve, and returned to Jasper CO. in August 1863. Has passed a very adventurous life on the Western plains.

FISHER, Benjamin
Farmer; Sec. 13; P. O. Greencastle; born in Baltimore, Md. in 1803; came to York Co., Penn. in 1806; thence to Wayne Co., Ind. in 1835, and to Jasper Co. in 1857. Has 150 acres of land, valued at $50. Married Miss Eltzabeth HILDENBRAND in 1830. She was born in York Co., Penn. in 1811, died Sept. 29, 1877, leaving thirteen children - Rebecca, Adam, Eliza, Savela, Benjamin, Ellanora, Elizabeth, Gemimah, Edward, Sarah, Mariah, Keziah and Gideon. Republican; Mr. and Mrs. F. were both members of the Evangelical Association. Mr. Fisher had two sons, William and Silas, in the late war; William died in service; Silas died in April 1876. When Mr. F. came to Jasper Co. he had no house and could get none; unloaded on the open prairie, without shelter. Note: Transcriber's note: It was most probably a typographical error when the vale of the land was listed as $50. In keeping with the format of other sketches and the value of Jasper Co. land, it most likely should have read "valued at $50 per acre."

Married Rosanna MYERS in 1859. She was born in Ohio in 1837. They have six children - Ladora A., Lydia E., Sarah E., Edward R., Benjamin F. and Gertie M. Is a Republican, and is a member of the School Board; Mr. F. and wife are members of the Evangelical Association. He is a member of the Sons of Temperance.

Mr. P. has the finest buildings in the county; came here in 1849; entered 160 acres in 1850; soon after sold out and went to California; remained till 1851; returned and bought the same land, and now has 568 acres, valued at $40 per acre, livery stable, vacant lot and two lots with dwellings in Colfax.

Married Miss Nancy N. CLINE in 1840. She was born in Bourbon Co., Ky., April 11, 1821, died in April 1865, leaving six children - Margaret J., John A., Milton W., George, Martin and Ella. Then married Mrs. Caroline VANHOOK in 1867. She was born in Canada in 1836. They have four children - Frankie, Savannah, Minnie and Anna. Republican. Has held the office of School Director eight years. Came to Polk Co. in a wagon; had but fifty cents on arriving there, with which he bought corn meal and potatoes for the family. Had a land warrant, which he exchanged for a farm; then improved that somewhat, and sold and came to Jasper Co. and started again; plowed the first furrow and split the first rails in this vicinity; made, hauled out and laid up 5,500 rails in one year; has one of the finest orchards in this vicinity, 440 trees, planted in 1868; formerly owned 380 acres where Colfax now stands. His oldest son, John, is now practicing medicine at Clyde, Iowa.

Has held the office of Township Trustee three terms. Mr. and Mrs. R. and their two oldest daughters are members of the Evangelical Association, and they, as well as all the family, are members of the Sons of Temperance.

She was born in Virginia in 1815, died in 1851, leaving three children - David E., Margaret and Sarah (who died July 1869). Then married Mrs. Eveline HILTON in 1852. She was born in East Tennessee in 1824. They have four children - Alford L., Emily, Alice B. and Frances M. Democrat. Has held the office of Township Trustee for several years, School Director. He is a member of the Christian Church since 21 years of age; she is a Methodist. Mr. SAMS has had 620 acres of land here; helped his children to farms until he has but the above-named left; has a fine orchard of 500 trees, pears and cherries; over fifty Early Richmond.

She was born in Mansfield, Ohio in 1832. They have two children - Hugh P. and Eddie S. Formerly a Whig, and since the organization of the Republican party, a Republican. Has held the offices of County Clerk and Surveyor tow full terms, Justice of the Peace and Assessor four terms. Is a member of the A., F. & A. M. Lodge, No. 59, Newton. Enlisted in the 40th I. V. I. in 1862; sent home on recruiting service; spent the first Winter at Columbus, Ky., thence to Paducah, Ky., thence to Starstin on the Yazoo River, thence to Hanes' Bluff and Snyder's Bluff; after the fall of Vicksburg on Reserve; thence to Arkansas; participated in the taking of Little Rock, was the first to cross the river on pontoon Oct. 10, 1863; was sent home on the last of November of the same year on recruiting service; remained one month and was sent to Davenport, Iowa; was kept on duty at recruiting camp until April 1, following, and returned to the regiment; mustered out at Davenport, Iowa in 1864. Mrs. TURNER's father, Andrew PEASE, belonged to Co. I, 37th Iowa Graybeard Vols.; mustered in Dec. 15, 1862; died Jan. 10, 1862, guarding prisoners at Alton, Ill.* Note: Transcriber's note: The date of his death is BEFORE the date he was mustered in. In 1857, he married Miss Sarah NEWHOUSE; born in Hocking Co., Ohio in 1829. They have four children - Mary, Samuel E., Minerva and Sedgwick. Mr. W. is Independent in politics. Was School Director for fifteen years; is now School Treasurer, also Township Trustee. Mrs. W. is a member of the M. E. Church. He came here for the purpose of growing stock, to which he devoted his whole attention, feeding from 100 to 150 head of bullocks, and double that number of hogs per year; he is the pioneer stock feeder of Iowa.
