Farmer; Sec. 26; P. O. Prairie City; born Dec. 5, 1805; came to this county in 1868; has 160 acres of land, valued at $6,000; belongs to the M. E. Church. Married Emily GILSON. She was born in New York in 1813, and died Dec. 17, 1877. She was mother of twelve children, eight of whom are living - Mary, Delia, Almira, Lentoin, Emily, Adda, Jeremiah, Alfred, Adelbert. Emigrated from Pennsylvania to Galesburg, Knox Co., Ill.; lived there seven years; thence to Jasper Co. The home Mr. B. used to own now stands the city of Vanguida, Warren Co., Penn.; oil was struck on the same place a short time after leaving; probably there are a hundred wells on the place; could sold one year later for $1,000 per acre.

Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 31; P. O. Prairie City; born in St. Charles Co., Mo., Oct. 7, 1831. Came to this county in 1865; has 200 acres of land, valued at $10,000. Married Mary KUHNS. She was born in Mercer Co., Penn., May 13, 1836. They have thirteen children, ten of whom are living - Carter, born April 5, 1858; Sylvester, Dec. 19, 1859; Elizabeth, Dec. 9, 1863; Christina, Dec. 15, 1867; Annie, April 14, 1871; Luary, Nov. 26, 1872; George, May 3, 1874; Della, Dec. 14, 1875; Fred, April 24, 1878. Emigrated from Missouri with his parents to Jackson Co., Iowa, in 1846, where he lived nineteen years; thence to Jasper Co. where he has resided since; settled twenty-two miles from Dubuque, and there were not more than a half dozen houses on the road. Prairie City was very small when he first came here, only one store; came here early, and has a good home with comfortable surroundings.

Married his first wife, Mary CHURCHELL. She was born in New York. They had three children, two living - Sarah E. and George S. For his second wife, married Catherine STOUFFER. She was born in Ohio, Feb. 25, 1836. They have one child - John F. Came from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin; lived there some time; thence to the northern part of Iowa; from there went to Freeborn Co., Minn.; traveled around considerable; was in Kansas and in 1866 came to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. Raised about eighty acres of corn (4,000 bushels), 400 bushels of oats, generally feeds a car load of cattle and turns off about seventy-five head of hogs yearly.

Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 19; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Licking Co., Ohio, Jan. 12, 1821; came to this county in 1854. Has 180 acres of land, valued at $7,200. Politics, Republican. Held the office of Justice of the Peace eight years; also Assessor and Township Clerk. Married Mary Ann SLAUGHTER. She was born in Perry Co., Ohio, May 5, 1822. They have four children - Oliver, Sarah, Townsend and Jemima. Came direct from Ohio to Jasper County, where he has resided since. At the time he came here Washington and Mound Prairie were in one township, and the first election was held in Sand Ridge School House. Came here amongst the earliest settlers. Has a good and comfortable home, and is one of the substantial farmers.

DANIEL, R. W.
Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 21; was born in Rockbridge Co., Va., May 26, 1843. Came to this county in 1870. Has eighty acres of land, valued at $2,400. Married Margaret A. HEMPHILL. She was born in Missouri, Sept. 25, 1839; mother of four children - Ella V., John W., Charles H. and Lillie G.; the boys died in infancy. His parents came from Virginia when he was 2 years old to Pike Co., Missouri; lived there twenty years thence to Warren Co., Ill.; lived there five years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa. Enlisted in the Co. C, 3rd Mo. V. C. in 1861; was in the battles of Kirksville, Pilot Knob; was in all the skirmishes of the regiment; was taken prisoner at Centreville, Mo., Dec. 22, 1864; was recaptured on the 25th; mustered out at Macon City, Mo.; was in the service three and one-half years; was Sixth Sergeant, and acted as Q. M. of the company. Raises about 2,000 bushels of corn, 300 of wheat, 500 of oats; turns off twenty-five head of hogs.

Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 33; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Orange Co., Indiana, Aug. 6, 1824. Came to this county in 1839. Has 240 acres of land, valued at $12,000. Belongs to the M. E. Church. Married for his first wife, Susannah BUNER. She was born in the same county, June 10, 1828, died January 9, 1859. They have five children living - Saro, Mary A., Edward C., Reuben H., John S. For his second wife, married Susan PECKENPAUGH, born Schuyler Co., Ill., April 17, 1836; mother of six children living - Emma, Nancy, Julia, Bell, Olive, Susannah. Emigrated from Indiana to Knox Co., Ill in the Fall of 1852; lived there 17 years, thence to Jasper Co., Iowa. When they came to Galesburg there were only two stores and about 1,000 inhabitants; there was only one house between Galesburg and Keithsburg, thirty miles. In the Fall or Winter of 1853, saw the first train that ran over the C., B. & Q. R. R. Used the first corn planter used in the United States, manufactured by G. W. Brown of Galesburg, Ill. Was amongst the earliest settlers of Knox Co., Ill. When he came to this county, located on the farm where he now resides. There was not a tree or shrub on the place. Now has a grove from twenty-five feet to forty feet high planted by his own hand and grown in the last nine years. Has an orchard of 150 trees of the best varieties. Has two and a half miles of the best hedge fence in the county; brought his seed from Illinois, sowed and set his own hedge. Mr. F. married cousins - names Susan and Susannah; their mothers are both living, one 85 years old and one 83. Mr. F. has one of the best farms in Mound Prairie Township, and is one of the sound farmers of the county.

Holds the office of Township Trustee. Member of the Congregational Church. He married Matilda A. LUCAS. She was born in Centre Co., Penn., Nov. 6, 1841. They have four children - Arthur, born Sept. 17, 1865; George, Jan. 18, 1867; David, Nov. 4, 1869; Johnny, June 17, 1875. Emigrated from Pennsylvania to Missouri, stopped; thence the Mississippi River to Keokuk; bought a team and wagon, and came through to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. Brought some money with him; paid $2,500 for 170 acres of land, on which there were forty acres broken. Mr. G. has a fine farm and home, and is one of the sound farmers of the township.

GROSS, G. G.
Farmer and Live Stock Dealer; Sec. 35; P. O. Prairie City; born in Fannin Co., Ga., Dec. 14, 1844. Came to this county in 1872 in August. Has 320 acres of land, valued at $12,800. Belongs to the M. E. Church. Married Mary E. STALLCOP. She was born in Johnson Co., Ind., April 14, 1829. Has two children - Francis M. and Willie. Mrs. G. was married to a man of the name PELL, by whom she had five children living - Pleasant, Richard S., Robert W., James H., Howard S. Mr. G. left Georgia in 1862; came to Lake Co., Ind.; lived there about ten years; thence to Jasper Co. Mr. G. has some pure-blooded Short-horn cattle; can give pedigree, and as fine as there is in the State. Any one in want of some good cattle would do well to call and examine his her; also some pure blooded Poland-China pigs. Has taken first premium on Short-horns for several years until last year; year before last took sweepstakes. Raises on an average 120 acres corn, or 6,000 bushels; wheat, 300 bushels; oats, 1,500; turns off 240 head of hogs yearly. Mr. G.'s parents were among the earliest settlers in Des Moines Township. They came in the year 1855.

Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 29; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Trumbull Co., Ohio, May 4, 1831. Came to this county in 1859. Has 160 acres of land, valued at $8,000. Held the offices of Town Supervisor, Assessor, Town Clerk. Belongs to the Christian Church. Married Selena McLAUGHLIN. She was born in Mercer Co., Penn, Jan. 7, 1833. Emigrated from Ohio to Scott Co., Iowa in 1854; lived there one year; thence to Clinton County; lived there about four years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa, where he has resided since. Came through with teams; camped out; did their own cooking; worked with first Fall for J. W. MACY. He worked and put in one horse for a dollar a day; his wife picked up potatoes in the field, and that is the way they started out in a new country. The next Spring they built a shanty 16X20 feet. In 1860, went to breaking prairie and raised a crop. Enlisted in the 10th I. V. I. in 1861, under Capt. GARRETT of Newton; was in the battles of Corinth, Iuka, Jackson, Champion Hills, siege of Vicksburg; was elected as First Lieutenant; the First Lieutenant resigned, but his resignation was not accepted; was afterward elected as Second Lieutenant and was commissioned by Gov. KIRKWOOD. Has a good dairy of eighteen cows. Has an orchard of eighteen acres, fine grove and plenty of small fruit; came here a poor man - had an old team and wagon, 85 cents in his pocket and eighty acres of raw prairie; but by muscle and good management, has made himself one of the pleasantest homes of the township. The shanty they built the next year or Summer, the cracks were large enough to allow the stove pipe to pass through them.

McCONNELL, Franklin, deceased
born in Posey Co., Ind., Jan. 26, 1823; died Aug. 18, 1863; he came to this county in 1855; had 200 acres of land, valued at $8,000. Married Eliza CARTER; she was born in Posey Co., Ind., May 1, 1826; they have seven children-Rane, James, John, Osee, Flora, Azora and Benjamin F.; had one son, Robert, who died at Vicksburg; was in the 23d Regiment Iowa V. I. Left Indiana in 1845; came to Mahaska Co., Iowa; lived there five years; thence to Marion County; lived there five years; then came to Jasper County. Mr. McCONNELL was amongst the earliest settlers; came here when the prairies were wild, and in limited circumstances; by hard work and economy has left his family in comfortable circumstances enough to keep the wolf from the door. Mr. McCONNELL also enlisted in the Union army in defense of this country, in the 23d Regiment Iowa V. I.; at the siege of Vicksburg, he contracted a disease of which he died a short time after getting home.

Farmer; Sec. 20; P. O. Colfax; born in Indiana in 1841; came to Jasper Co. in 1854; has 420 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Married Miss Arabella EDMONSON in 1866; she was born in Iowa in 1842; they have three children-Jessie A., Alice J. and Lizzie. Republican in politics. President of the School Board. Enlisted in the 46th Iowa V. I., under Col. D. B. HENDERSON and Capt. J. H. TILTON in 1864; was in no engagements; mustered out in the Fall of 1864. Mr. MACY's father has entered from Government and bought 1,920 acres of land.

Farmer; Sec. 17; P. O. Colfax; was born in Pennsylvania, Dec. 26, 1829; came to this county in the Fall of 1871. Republican; belongs to the Presbyterian Church. Married E. J. SMITH; she was born in Fayette Co., Penn., Dec. 27, 1834; they have had nine children, seven living-Emeline, Hiram, Elmer, James Oliver, Sarah Elizabeth, Etta V. and Frank Miner. Emigrated to Hardin Co., Ohio, in 1858; lived there thirteen years; thence to Jasper Co. Enlisted three times, but was discharged for disability. Was employed by the Government three years in Hardin Co.; bought thousands of dollars' worth of stock; was in the agricultural business about three years; also owned a farm five miles east of Prairie City, in Sec. 31; has as good a farm as there is in Mound Prairie Tp.; was in Prairie City one year to educate his children; lives on what is know as the Lamb Place, one mile from Mineral Springs, and one mile from Colfax; has bought stock for two Winters in the county; raises on an average 2,500 of corn, 400 bushels of wheat, 900 bushels of oats, and turns off a car load of hogs; has 127 head on hand; has some fine-blooded Poland-China pigs. Mr. M. is well located, and has one of the best farms, near railroad and near town, and is one of its sound farmers.

Held the office of Town Trustee, etc. Belongs to the Christian Church. Married Catherine HUMPHREYS; she was born in Champaign Co., Ohio, April 22, 1822; mother of six children-William H., Mary Alice, Orpha J., James W., John H. and Cora E. His parents emigrated from Pennsylvania when he was a boy 12 years old, to Richland Co., Ohio; lived there eleven years, thence to Wayne Co.; lived there five years, thence to Crawford Co., where he married his wife, and lived there four years; thence to Cedar Co., Iowa, lived there eight years; thence to Warren Co., Ill., lived there four years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa. Bought the farm where he now lives eight years ago, in its wild state, and to-day it is the premium farm of the county. Has a fine house and barn, good grove put out with his own hands; now stands from fifteen to twenty-five feet high; plenty of small fruit. Probably the best farm for the number of acres in the county, and he is one of the sound farmers of the county.

RINEHART, J. S.
Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 17; P. O. Prairie City; born in Richland Co., Ohio, March 8, 1835; came to this county July 4, 1854; has 160 acres of land, valued at $7,000. Married Elizabeth NEEDLES; she was born in Knox Co., Ill., May 10, 1846; mother of four children-George S., Lormie, Charlie, Orra. Came to this county when he was 19 years old; his father was amongst the earliest settlers in this county; when he came here there were not more than four or five families in the township; there was plenty of game-deer, prairie chickens and wolves; came through with teams from Ohio; camped out and was on the road twenty-eight days; had about $8,000 in gold; bought and located 2,000 acres of land; had a family of eight children, and gave each of them a good farm; Mr. J. S. R. has one of the best orchards in the county, of 800 to 1,000 trees; has a good farm on as fine a prairie as there is in the State of Iowa.

Held the offices of Town Trustee, Assessor and School Treasurer. Married E. M. KENNEDY, born in Mifflin Co., Penn., Nov. 24, 1832; mother of six children, three living-Edgar F., Harry C., George K.; lost three children infancy. His parents emigrated from Ohio when he was 9 years old to West Virginia; lived there three years; thence to Scott Co., Iowa; lived there thirty-six years; then to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. There was only one house in Davenport at the time they went to Scott Co.; was there at the time Col. DAVENPORT was killed; knew the man that was first arrested for the murder, a man of the name Charles BUDD; his father was amongst the earliest settlers of the county; was there before the county was laid out into sections; his grandfather on his mother's side was in the Revolutionary war. Mr. S. has made for himself and family a pleasant home.

SLAUGHTER, Joseph
Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 5; P. O. Colfax; born in Perry Co., Ohio, Oct. 27, 1819; came to this county in 1838; has 1,000 acres of land, valued at $60,000; Married Balinda MEYERS; she was born in Licking Co., Ohio, in 1817; they have seven children-John W., Hester E., Mary E., Solomon, Scott, Taylor and Emma. Emigrated from Ohio to Des Moines Co. in 1838; lived there two years; thence to Henry Co.; lived there three years; thence to Jasper Co., where he has resided since; when he first came here his nearest neighbor was fourteen miles away; was the third man in the county, and don't know that he wasn't but the second; there were at the time he came here plenty of Indians, deer, wolves and wild turkeys; raised his shanty in 1838, and in the Spring of 1839 brought his family out; had to stay in the wagon until he got the roof on; the first election he attended was at Edwards' Grove, before the county was laid out into sections; helped to carry the chain to lay it out; had an ox team, three milch cows, one two-year-old colt, four sows and $3.25 in his pocket; came here a poor man when the prairies were wild, and by pluck and an iron will to battle against the hardship of a new country, is among the wealthiest men of the county.

STEWART, R. N.
Farmer and stock raiser Sec. 18; P. O. Colfax; was born in West Virginia Jan. 18, 1834; came to this county in 1864; has 480 acres of land, valued at $19,200. In politics, Greenbacker. Has held the office of Justice of the Peace for the last eight years. Member of the Presbyterian Church. Married Lizzie McGUIRE; she was born in Carlton, Carroll Co., Ohio, Dec. 16, 1839; they have five children-Ida S., James M., Frank W., Mamie (died when she was 18 months old) and Annie L. Emigrated direct from Virginia to this county, where he has resided since; came through on the cars to Grinnell, Iowa, as far as the road was completed at that time; kept a stage station two years called Colfax P. O., from which the village of Colfax derived its name; Mr. S. had the honor of naming the place; kept about a thousand sheep; afterward went to Prairie City; bought grain one year; thence to his present farm; came here in limited circumstances, and to-day he ranks with the sound farmers of the county. Held the office of Justice of the Peace, Town Clerk and Secretary of the School Board; member of the M. E. Church. For his first wife, married Rebecca M. PAULEY; she was born in Virginia Feb. 15, 1813; they had eleven children, five living-Charles P., Joseph, Mary Ann, Nancy and Angeline. For his second wife, married Sarah ANDERSON; she was born in Adams Co., Ohio, June 16, 1821; they have seven living children-Catherine, Sophronia, Cora, Kennie A., Oliver, John, Fletcher and Susie I. Mrs. V. was married to a man of the name of EARLY, by whom she was four children, two living-George and Huldah. Mr. V.'s parents emigrated to Indiana; lived there ten years; thence to Knox Co., Ill., where he resided twenty-eight years; was amongst the earliest settlers in Knox Co.; Galesburg was not known when he first went there; did his trading at that time at Knoxville, the county seat at that time; was in the State of Iowa in 1842, at the time of the land sale at Burlington; in 1864, came to Jasper Co.; has a good farm on as fine a prairie as there is in the State.

Is a member of the M. E. Church. Married Hannah E. CLOUGH; she was born in Greene Co., N. Y., Dec. 24, 1833; Mr. W. emigrated to Henry Co., Ill.; lived there four years; thence to Jasper Co. where he has resided since; raises about 65 acres of corn yearly, 10 acres of wheat, 15 acres of oats, turns off 40 head of hogs; has some pure blooded Poland-China pigs; for the last seven or eight years has contended for premiums at their Fair, and has taken more first premiums on Poland-China hogs than any man in the county; has as fine a house as any man need live in, and is amongst the wealthiest men in the township.
