They had ten children, seven are living - Agness (married William McLAIN, and died in Oct. 1876), Lizzie (now Mrs. J. P. WINSTED, of Circleville, Ohio), Maggie H., William O., Charles Sumner, Hugh Edward, and Mattie Esther; two children died in infancy. Mr. Mc. has 220 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre; has fine buildings and good improvements, nearly 100 bearing apple trees, a nice forest, etc. He moved with his family to Iowa in 1869, and bought the farm he now owns. Mr. and Mrs. McElroy and five of their children are members of the Congregational Church; he is a Republican in politics.

McLEAN, W. M.
Farmer; Sec. 3, Wittemburg College; P. O. Newton; born in Trumbull Co., Ohio, Dec. 18, 1836. Married Agness McELROY in Iowa in 1872. She was born in Ohio in 1846. They had three children - Eddie and Annie (twins; Eddie died at the age of three years) and Hugh, born in 1875. He has 215 acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. Mr. McLEAN enlisted in the 86th Ohio V. I., for four months; served his time and re-enlisted in teh 76th Penn. V. I., called the Keystone Zouaves; was in teh Army of the James; was in the battle and taksng[sic] of Fort Fisher, under Gen. Terry; was in nine severe engagements; was at and about Petersburg and in several small battles and skirmishes; was discharged at the expiration of his term of service. After the close of the war, he came to Iowa in 1869. Has held office of Township Clerk. Mr. McLean and brothers own the large college known as the Wittemburg College, and the College farm.

MOORE, Harrison
Farmer and Stock Raiser; S. 4; P. O. Newton; born in Summit Co., Ohio, April 11, 1838. Married Catherine RINGLE in Henry Co., Illinois, Aug. 1, 1861. She was born in Allgheny Co., Penn., Oct. 2, 1842. They have three children - Harry, George and Willie; three children died in infancy. Has 305 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre. He moved to Illinois in 1857; remained thirteen years, thence to Iowa in 1870. Mr. Moore came to this state in limited circumstances; he went into hog raising; had good success, selling $2,000 worth a year, for several years, and now he is well situated and in good circumstances, with a good farm well watered, with orchards, groves, and all the comforts of a home; and has the respect of all his neighbors. Votes the Republican ticket.

MOYER, Christian
Farmer; S. 2; P. O. Newton; born in Centre Co., Penn., July 21, 1825. Married for his second wife Caroline SHEARER in Iowa in 1874. She was born in Lawrence Co., Penn. in 1826. Had four children by his first wife - Mary Catherine, John W., Harriet Angeline and Lillie Bell. Has 109 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Moved into Ohio and thence to Scott Co., Iowa in 1855; thence to Jasper in 1865. He learned the tanner's trade and followed it ten years before coming to the Western States. Mr. Moyer and his wife are members of the Lutheran Church. He has a well improved farm, good buildings and orchard, grove, etc., which he made by his hard labor. Mrs. Moyer lived in Lawrence Co., Penn., taking care of her aged parents until their death in 1875; she then spent a season in Missouri visiting her friends, and thence to Iowa.

Learned the wagon making trade in Ohio, which he followed five years in Iowa. Has held office of Tp. Trustee. They are members of the Evangelical Church; he is a member of the Grange and is a Greenbacker. Has a good farm with good buildings and an orchard, etc., and made his property by his energy.

They have had ten children, six of whom are living - N. M., Cassanah A., Mariah A., Ulysses S., Jannatta E. and Oliver B. Has eighty acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. He moved to Polk Co., Iowa in 1854; remained six years, and moved to Jasper Co. in 1860. Enlisted in Co. G, 23d I. V. I., in the 16th Army Corps; was disabled for life while in the army, and was discharged by reason of physical disability in 1863. He was one of the earliest pioneers of Polk Co. He was engaged in the saw-mill and lumber business in Vandalia, Iowa before the war. Mr. and Mrs. R. are members of the Methodist Protestant Church.

SCHNATHORST, Fred
Farmer; S. 35; P. O. Newton, born in Germany May 1, 1826. Married Caroline HOOK in Germany in 1850. She was born in Germany in 1826. They have seven children - Caroline, Ernestine, Fred, Henry, Anna, Charles and Maggie. Has 350 acres of land, valued at $25 per acre. Moved to Wisconsin in 1857; remained twenty years; thence to Iowa in 1878. Mr. and Mrs. S. are members of teh Evangelical Church. Mr. Schnathorst paid $1,270 toward enlistment for the late war.

Farmer; S. 17; P. O. Newton; born in Sullivan Co., N. Y., Aug. 17, 1848. Married Miss H. M. CUTLER, daughter of S. M. CUTLER, in 1875. She was born in New York in 1848. They have one child - Edna. Has eighty acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. Mr. S. improved the present farm from the raw prairie. He moved to Iowa in 1862. They are members of the M. E. Church.

SCOTT, J. E.
Farmer and Stock Raiser; S. 9; P. O. Newton; born in Warrick Co., Indiana, March 22, 1842. Married Joanna GUILTNER. She was born in Indiana. They had three children - Nellie Jane, Cora and Hattie. Mrs. Scott died in 1874. Mr. Scott married for his second wife Mrs. Emma COOPER in Newton in 1875. She was born in Des Moines City, Iowa, Oct. 18, 1847; she had four children - Lowell, Thomas, Clark and Markett. Mr. and Mrs. Scott have since their marriage one child - Charles. He has 200 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre. Mr. S. has a good house, barn, orchard, small fruits, grove, etc. He came to Scott Co., Iowa in 1846; remained seven years, thence to Jasper Co. in 1853; located on his present farmin 1867. Mr. and Mrs. Scott are members of the M. E. Church, and he is a member of teh Good Templars. He has seventy-two head of cattle, seven horses; keeps thorough-bred short horn stock; 150 head of hogs; he raised 1,200 bushels of wheat in one season. Mr. Marcus COOPER, Mrs. Scott's first husband, was in the late war four years; lost his health by being in the army, and died seven years after the war closed. Mr. Scott is a Republican.

Farmer; Sec. 12; P. O. Newton; born in Pennsylvania, Aug. 31, 1822. Married Helen M. SMEAD in Iowa in 1855. She was born in New York in 1839. They have four children - Charles, John, Mary and Esther. Has 100 acres of land, valued at $4,000. He moved to Iowa in 1854; he has held the office of Justice of the Peace in Newton; was Postmaster six years in Newton, and was U. S. Marshal in 1860; he was engaged in the furniture and mercantile business in Newton. He enlisted as private in Co. I, 10th Iowa V. I.; was promoted to First Lieutenant and then to Captain of Co. A; then to Lieutenant Colonel, and commissioned as Colonel of teh 10th Iowa; he was in the Army of Tennessee, under the different leading Generals; was in the siege of Corinth, Island No. 10, and Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, Savannah and Atlanta; was in four years of active service; was in all the principal engagements; was in Gen. Sherman's march to the sea; received some slight wounds; returned home to his farm and family after the close of the war, in Sept. 1865. He is a member of teh A., F. & A. M. Lodge, and his wife is a member of the Presbyterian Church.

SWIHART, Eli
Farmer; S. 6; P. O. Newton; born in Holmes Co., Ohio, April 20, 1850. Married Susan GINDLESPERGER in Ohio in 1872. She was born in Ohio, July 1852. They have one child - Elizabeth E. Have 101 1/2 acres of land, valued at $40 per acre. Moved into Iowa in 1866. Made a visit back to Ohio, and married his wife, and returned to the farm. He is well situated with a good farm and good improvements, with grove and orcahrd, etc. Mr. S. made his own property and his own improvements by his energy and perseverance. Mr. and Mrs. Swihart are members of the Congregational Church; Democratic in politics.

SWIHART, Emanuel
Farmer and Stock Raiser; S. 30; P. O. Newton; born in Holmes Co., Ohio, Jan. 1, 1838. Married Mary GINDLESPERGER in Ohio in 1866. She was born in Holmes Co., Ohio in 1843. They have three children - Mary Catharine, born in Ohio; Allie WIlmina, born in Iowa, and Joseph Elsworth, born in Iowa. Has 195 acres of land, valued at $60 per acre, a dwelling house which cost $2,500, good barns, a large bearing orchard, with all kinds of small fruits, and a large natural grove and all the comforts of life; he has three running springs of water. Mr. S. served in the late war in the 51st Ohio V. I., one year; was in teh Battle of Rock River and several smaller battles; was discharged with his regiment at teh expiration of his term of service. Mr. S. moved to Jasper Co., Iowa in 1866; commenced farming in limited circumstances; made a specialty of sheep raising and wool growing; was very successful, acquired a good property, and alweays lent a helping hand, and gave cheerfully to schools and churches and other charitable societies. Mr. and Mrs. S. are members of the Lutheran Church; he votes the Greenback ticket.

SWIHART, W. C., Mrs.
Farming and Stock Raising; S. 31; P. O. Newton; she was born in Germany, Oct. 22, 1832. Married in Ohio in June 1853 to Frederick SWIHART, deceased. They had six children - Wilson, Amanda (now Mrs. L. ALSPAUGH), Catharine, Emma George Henry and William Edward. Mr. Frederick Swihart died in Feb. 1874. He was a man of great energy, and very generous in giving liberally to schools and churches, and benevolent associations. He made a specialty of sheep raising, keeping 600 to 700 sheep. He was very successful, leaving a large farm with good buildings and other improvements. Mrs. Swihart and her son Wilson carry on farming quite extensively, owning together 160 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre. Mrs. Swihart came to Pennsylvania when a child; moved into Ohio, remaining till 1867, when they located in Iowa. Mrs. Swihart is a member of the Lutheran Church. Mr. Swihart was also a member for many years, and commanded the respect of all his acquaintances.

TAIT, R. A.
Carpenter and Farmer; S. 3; P. O. Newton; born in Pennsylvania, Sept. 10, 1821. Married Miss SHERER in Pennsylvania in 1845. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1825. They have two children - Thomas WIlliam, born May 14, 1858, and Martha Emily (now Mrs. M. W, LEWIS, Hastings, Neb.), born in Pennsylvania Dec. 7, 1845. Mr. T. has 110 acres of land, valued at $5,500. He moved to Illinois one Winter, and thence to Iowa June 14, 1856. Mr. T. followed carpentering from his boyhood; he built the Wittemburg College, and many of the houses and barns in Malaka Tp. Mr. and Mrs. T. are members of teh Congregational Church; he votes the Republican ticket. Mr. T. was an early pioneer in this section before the township was organized. He has made good improvements on his farm; has an orchard of all kinds of fruit, and a large grove, etc.

They have seven children - August, Charles, William, Henry, John, Mary and Emma. Has 160 acres of land, valued at $25 per acre. Came to Illinois in 1853; followed the mason business eighteen years, six in Germany and ten in Illinoios; came to Iowa in 1868, and improved his farm. They are members of the German Church.

VANATTA, Thomas
Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 10; P. O. Newton; born in Pennsylvania April 11, 1817. Married Martha SHEARER in Pennsylvania in 1837. She was born in Pennsylvania 1820. They have eight children - Nancy ( now Mrs. W. MORTON), Mary (now Mrs. W. R. McCULLY in Nebraska), Appoline (now Mrs. Richard KIDDOO, of Missouri), Hannah (now Mrs. A. YOUNG of Kansas), Joseph A., Richard M., Thomas R. and Charles F. Has 280 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. He moved to Muscatine Co. in 1846; remained eight years, and thence to Jasper Co. in 1854. Before the township of Malaka was formed, he settled 160 acres, and bought the additional 120 acres; made good improvements, set out a good orchard and grove, and has always given a good support to schools, churches, colleges, etc. His son James enlisted in the 5th Iowa V. I.; was wounded twice, in the arm and leg at the battle of Iuka; was under Gen Sigel; was in all the principal engagements with regiment, and discharged with his regiment at the close of the war; he died eighteen months after reaching home from the effect of taking a severe cold while in the army; he enlisted on the 9th of the month; left home on the 9th of the month; was discharged on the 9th of the month; and buried on the 9th of the month. Mr. and Mrs. Vanatta are members of the Presbyterian Church.

Farmer; S. 3; P. O. Newton; born in Union Co., Penn., May 1840. Married Elizabeth HOLLINGSWORTH in Pennsylvania in 1864. She was born in Pennsylvania in April 1837. They have seven children - David A., Joseph M., Harlan H., Demetrius D., Mary M., Anna V. and William W. Has five acres of the college divided into lots, called Wittemburg, valued at $500. He moved to Iowa in 1864. He enlisted in the 137th Penn. V. I., August 1862; was in the Army of Potomac; served nine months and was discharged with his regiment. He has a house with orchard and grove, etc. They are members of the Presbyterian Church.
