Y., May 8, 1824, came to Illinois and lived many years; settled in this county in March, 1875; owns 160 acres of land, valued at$35 per acre. His wife, Olive BENNETT, was born in Cayuga Co., N. Y., in 1831; they were married in March, 1853, and have eight children-Sarah Jane, Mary C., Charles, Alida W., Rachel W., Charlotte, Jeremiah B. and Dora E.

Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 5; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Gallia Co., Ohio, April 15, 1825; came to this county in 1872; has 280 acres of land, valued at $14,000. Belongs to the United Brethren Church. Married Esther A. WEBB; she was born in Ross Co., Ohio, Dec. 29, 1829; mother of three children-Malissa J., Francis O., Sarah E.; emigrated to Knox Co., Ill., in 1837; lived there thirty-three years; Galesburg at that time was a very small place; did their trading at Knoxville, then the county seat; his father lived there until 1875, when he died; his mother died ten days before; from Knox Co. came to Jasper Co.; has a very fine home, and a fine grove around his house, 25 to 40 feet high, planted with his own hands only six years ago; fine yard full of flowers; has a good orchard and plenty of small fruit; has a fine home, and is one of the sound farmers of the county.

LYONS, J. K.
Postmaster; Prairie City; born in Edenton, Clermont Co., Ohio, Dec. 14, 1842; came to this county in 1869. Politics, Republican. Was appointed in 1873 to the office of Postmaster. Enlisted in Co. G, 1st Ohio V. C.; was in the battles of Moulton, Ala., Dallas, Noonday Creek, Big Shanty, Bull Knob, Kenesaw Mountain, Roseville, Rough and Ready, Jonesboro, Monte Vallo, Ebenezer Church, Selma and Columbus; was discharged at Columbus, Ohio, on Sept., 1865. Mr. L. met with a serious accident; got his arm in the big belt of a steam threshing machine, breaking it three times, causing amputation.

Farmer and stock raiser; P. O. Prairie City; born in Highland Co., Ohio, April 21, 1821; came to this county in 1856; has 220 acres of land, valued at $10,000. Belongs to the M. E. Church. Married Anar KELSOE June 21, 1843; she was born in Highland Co., Ohio, March 4, 1823; they have nine living children-Julia Ann (now Mrs. R. B. SMITH), John W., R. L., J. B., Sarah E., Charles C., Mary M., Harland and Claretta. Came direct from Ohio to Jasper Co.; came through with teams in company with Mr. C. SMITH; was twenty-four days on the road; never enjoyed himself better in his life; the first five years lived in Prairie City; helped to build the first frame building, for a man of the name of ROBINSON. Lived in a shanty 14 x 14, where fourteen persons lived through the Summer-took their meals and slept; from Prairie City went to where he now resides, on a farm when it was wild; not a tree or shrub on it; now has a very pleasant home, fine groves about his house from forty to fifty feet high; has one of the finest orchards in the county, of 1,000 trees; has a large variety of small fruit. Came to the county in very limited circumstances, but by industry and economy has made himself and family a good home.

Retired farmer; Sec. 2; P. O. Prairie City; born in Columbia Co., Pennsylvania; came to this county in 1853; has ninety-two acres of land, valued at $4,600. Held the office of Justice of the Peace for a number of years; belongs to the M. E. Church. Married Elizabeth ROSEBURY; she was born in New Jersey July 30, 1805; they have four living children-William Fletcher, Harvest J., Mary Ann and Sophia. Emigrated from Pennsylvania in 1837 to Richland Co., Ohio; lived there sixteen years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa, where he has resided since; came through with teams; located on the land he now owns; at that time there was not a tree in four miles; there were only two families in Prairie City, and they lived in caves. Had one son in the army; William F. enlisted in Co. F, 4th Iowa V. C.; went in at the commencement of the war, and served four years; was in all the battles and skirmishes of the company. Mr. M. is one of the pioneers that came here among the earliest settlers.

Married for his first wife, Mary LAMB; was born in Mason Co., Ky., Nov. 4, 185; died Feb. 4, 1866; they had eight children, three living-Julia (now Mrs. J. W> COTTERELL) and C. M.; for his second wife, he married Susie L. WINNEGER; she was born in Highland CO., Ohio, Dec. 28, 1845; mother of one child-Bessie H. Emigrated from Brown Co. to Morgan Co., Ohio, in 1840; lived there seven years; thence to Jasper Co, Iowa; came through with wagon and team and located on Sec. 36; moved into a shanty 12 x 14; lived there until the next Spring, with twelve in the family; some of them slept in a wagon bed all winter; got his milling done in Oskaloosa, forty miles away; in 1848, started for mill and it took him eight days to make the trip on account of deep snow; has been forty miles after shorts, and paid $5 per cwt., in the Summer of 1851, the time of the wet season; had to boil corn and grate it to live on; also was paid $10 per barrel for flour; was at the first election held in this township at John FLEMMING's; there were only ten voters-William COTTRELL, N. BROWN, W. P. NORRIS, P. LYCE, John FLEMMING, William HAYES, J. Q. DEAKIN, Abner REA, E. PRUNTY, J. D. NORRIS; the Judges were J. D. NORRIS, J. Q. DEAKIN and J. FLEMMING. When . . . . Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 30; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Warren Co, N. Y., May 12, 1819; came to this county in December, 1865; has 240 acres of land, valued at $9,000. Belongs to the Christian Church. Married Ann BENNETT; she was born in York Co., Penn., September 12, 1822; mother of seven living children-John, Emiline, Clark, Bell, Aaron, George, Cornia. Emigrated from New York to Clearfield Co., Penn., in 1841; lived there fourteen years; in 1856 went to Stephenson Co., Ill.; stopped there a short time; thence to Mahaska Co., Iowa, lived there seven years; thence back to Pennsylvania, lived there two years; thence to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. Worked in the lumber business fourteen years in Pennsylvania; floated their lumber down the Susquehanna River to market it. When he left York State went to Fort Edward, New York, to see a man of the same name of ROGERS to get means to get through to Pennsylvania; could not get the required means and therefore started on foot to make it-some 600 or 800 miles; after traveling a couple of days, stopped over night with a man of the name WILLIAMS; through the night there came one of the worst snow-storms he had ever seen; told Mr. WILLIAMS that he would like a job; said that they wanted a school teacher, thought he was competent; got the school, taught the school through the Winter, and in Spring had money enough to go on his way rejoicing; traveled on foot most of the way; rode only about twenty-five miles.

Mr. PHILLIPS owns 120 acres of land, valued at $40 per acre; also 160 acres in Colorado, and a large stock ranch in Wyoming territory; also thirty head of horses, and over 800 head of cattle.

POMROY, W. K.
Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 13; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Erie Co., Penn., Jan. 21, 1836; came to this county in 1865; has 160 acres of land, valued at $8,000. Politics, Republican. Holds the office of President of the Agricultural Board. Married Sarah A. SMITH; she was born in Peoria Co., Ill., Dec. 28, 1843; they have three children-Leo, born April 10, 1871; Ora, Aug. 18, 1872; George J., July 27, 1875. Emigrated with his parents to Indiana, when he was 6 years old; lived there four years; thence to Mahaska Co.; lived there eighteen years, and thence to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. Enlisted in the 8th Iowa V. I., Co. H.; was in the battles of Shiloh, Pleasant Hill, siege of Vicksburg, Red River expedition; was taken prisoner at the battle of Shiloh; imprisoned at Tuscaloosa one year; endured the privation of a prison life; afterward paroled and exchanged but went back to his regiment. Mr. P. and brother has followed the business of feeding and shipping stock for nine years; has a very nice and pleasant home.

PORTER, Isaac
Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 18; P. O. Prairie City; born in Decatur Co., Ind., Aug. 26, 1826; came to this county in 1855; has 520 acres of land, valued at $15,600. Held the offices of Town Trustee, County Supervisor, etc. Married Mary HAYS; she was born in Henry Co., Ind., April 2,3 1840; they have three children-Annie, Sarah and Nancy E.; Andrew J. died when he was 10 years old. Emigrated direct from Indiana to this county, where he has resided since; raises 5,000 bushels of corn yearly, 900 bushels of wheat and 600 bushels oats; turns off sixty-five hogs; when he came here, he drove through some stock; was single at that time, and had but a very little money, but to-day has 520 acres of land as fine as a man need look at, which shows what a man can do if only he has the vim about him; to-day he can be classed among the wealthiest farmers of the county; has some pure-blooded Berkshire pigs, and any one in want of any would do well to call and examine his stock; has one of the best barns in the county; good orchard of 400 trees, thirty-six cherry trees, 200 grape vines and a variety of small fruit; came here among the earliest settlers and knows what a pioneer life is.

PROUNTY, Elias
Retired farmer; Prairie City; was born in Scott Co., Ky., May 15, 1809; came to this county in 1846; has 160 acres of land in Cherokee Co., valued at $4,000. Married Harriet CASSEL; she was born in Lexington, Ky., March 31,, 1813; they had eleven children, of whom nine are living-Elizabeth, Mary, Benjamin F., Sarah, David, George, Jane, Emma and Robert. Mrs. P. died Aug. 13, 1877; he emigrated to Morgan Co., Ill., in the Fall of 1833; lived there ten years and thence to Red Rock, Marion Co., Iowa, and lived there until the Fall of 1846; at the time the Indians left the county, himself and a man named RAY were the first settlers in Des Moines Tp.; was at the first election held in Polk Co.; when he came here, this county was one vast prairie, nothing but the wild beasts and Indians could be seen. Mr. P. is an old and respected citizen, and a member of the Christian Church.

Grain and farm machinery dealer; Prairie City; born in Onondaga Co., N. Y., July 8, 1838; came to this county in June, 1869. Married Rachel B. COX; she was born in Ohio in 1837; they have two children-William L. and James S. Held the office of Town Trustee three terms. He emigrated from New York to Iowa in 1858 (Marion CO.), and lived there until 1869, when he came to this county, where he has resided since; he ships on an average of 200 cars of grain and produce yearly. Enlisted in the 1st Iowa V. C. in June, 1861, Co. H; was in the service three years and nine months; was in the battle of Mark's Mills, Prairie Grove, Saline River, capturing Little Rock, Ark., and Pymeta; was in all the principal battles of the regiment.

SCHULENBURG, Edward
Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 2; born in Prussia, Germany, Aug. 26, 1822; came to this country in 1853; has 165 acres of land, valued at $8,250. Held the office of School Director and Road Supervisor. Married Sarah BROWN; she was born in McDonough Co., Ill., July 8, 1834; they have eleven living children-Nancy D. (now Mrs. C. KIPPEL), Jacob, Frederick, Elizabeth, Electa, Jane, George, Selona, Rosetta, Homer and Charlie; lost two in infancy. Emigrated from Germany when he was 27 years old, and located in New Jersey a short time, thence on canal boat to Detroit, Mich.; worked on the railroad a few days, then bought forty acres of land, about seven miles from Detroit; traded that and then went to La Fayette, Ind.; lived there three years, thence to Jasper Co., Iowa, where he has resided since; raises about 2,000 bushels of corn yearly; Mr. S. has a fine farm close to the depot, a fine house and barn, and is one of the well-to-farmers of the township. Enlisted in the 23d I. V. I.; was at Des Moines about one month, when he procured a substitute, costing him $300; was also in the regular army in Prussia two years.

SHEARER, H. J.
Farmer; Sec. 8; P. O. Prairie City; born in Vermilion Co., Ill., Nov. 17, 1832; came to this county in 1848; has 200 acres of land, valued at $8,000. Married Cilia M. DRAPER; she was born near Indianapolis, Ind., July 7, 1838; mother of six children-A. Ross, Ida, Laura, James, Charlie, Nellie. His father was a native of North Carolina; he emigrated from there to Kentucky, thence to Ohio, thence to Indiana, thence to Vermilion CO., Ill., where the subject of this sketch was born; was one of the earliest settlers of that county; when he was 16 years old, he came to Jasper Co.; came through with teams, and camped out; brought along their household furniture with the lot, thirteen bedsteads, which were a luxury at that rime; landed one half mile east of Vandalia, in a shanty about 16 x 18, with a chimney built on the outside of timber; stoned it up the first thing they did after arriving; was among the earliest settlers; there were not more than four or five families on this part of the county; had to go to Oskaloosa for their milling, forty miles; Monroe, and Prairie City were not known; his father built the first frame building in Des Moines Tp., or in the county; Uncle Elias PRUNTY was to paint the first frame building for nothing; he painted it, on what terms he could not hear; Mr. SHEARER and a man named PRUNTY fed the first cattle ever fed in this county; had to drive them 110 miles east, to a man of the name DAY, for scales to weigh them; received $3.55 per hundred; the first school house built on his father's farm, about one-half mile east of Vandalia.

Sec. 32; P. O. Monroe; born Jan. 25, 1845, in Mahaska Co., Iowa. His wife, Susan Anna DeLONG, born Nov. 19, 1851, in Monroe, Jasper Co.; married Jan. 12, 1870; children-Archie B., born in Jasper CO., Dec. 20, 1870; Winifred, born in Jasper Co. Jan. 13, 1874; Annie, born in Warren Co., Iowa, Oct. 18, 1876, died Nov. 22, 1876. Mr. SHELLEDY enlisted in Co. F, 18th I. V. I., in July, 1862; was in the battles of Springfield, Mo., Newtonia, and a skirmish at Fayetteville, Ark.; was discharged Dec. 30, 1862.

SHELLEDY, Stephen B., deceased
born in Fleming Co., Ky., in 1801; moved to Ohio, and thence to Indiana. Was married to Elizabeth VANCE in 1824. Moved to Illinois in 1825; to Mahaska Co. in 1843; engaged in mercantile business in Monroe, Jasper Co. Served in the Black Hawk war, and promoted to rank of Colonel. Served two terms in the Legislature of Illinois, representing Edgar Co.; was a member of the Territorial Legislature of Iowa in 1844-5, when Jasper and other counties were organized; he also represented Jasper Co. in the State Legislature, and was Speaker one term; also held the office of State Marshal with the rank of Colonel, and as a commissioned officer he served in the late civil war, and returned in broken health, and died Dec. 17, 1870.

SHEPHERD, Daniel
Farmer and stock grower; Secs. 19, 25 and 24; P. O. and residence Prairie City; born in Indiana in 1823 came to Jasper Co. in 1857; has 800 acres, valued at $40 per acre. Married Miss Elizabeth J. ELLETT in 1857; she was born in Indiana in 1839; they have one child-Lizzie, born in 1863. Republican. Mr. S. had oncoming to Iowa only enough to pay for 120 acres of land; has improved, fenced, and broken over 1,100 acres.

WELLS; she was born in Ohio in 1845; they have three children-Eddie, Lola, and Effie. Mr. SULLIVAN enlisted in the 36th N. Y. I. V. I. Co. G; was in the battle of Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville; was mustered out the day before the battle of Gettysburg; mustered out in New York at the time of the big riot, and had two or three men killed out of his regiment.

Vandalia; born in Allegheny Co., Penn., Jan. 15, 1832, and came to this county in1856; owns 100 acres of land in Sec. 30, valued at $30 per acre; also a lot and residence, and one-half interest in blacksmith shop. In politics, he is a Democrat. His wife, Sarah POPE, was born in Ohio, March 21, 1841; were married Jan. 27, 1859; have one child-Eliza Jane, born Dec. 25, 1859. Mr. Wallace enlisted in Co. E, 14th I. V. I., Sept. 28, 1861; was in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Pleasant Hill, Louisiana; was captured there and detained as prisoner till the close of the war.

Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 15; P. O. Prairie City; born in Chenango Co., N. Y., July 20, 1822; came to this county in 1853; has 450 acres of land valued at $18,000. Member of the M. E. Church. Married for his first wife, Margaret McMELLEN; she was born in Franklin Co., Ohio, April 8, 1827; they had four children; three living-David, William, L. Don; Mary YOUNG died Dec. 26, 1873; for his second wife, married Mary A. JEFFERS; she was born in Indiana, May 15, 1838; they have five living children-Martha, Annie, Henry, James and Margaret; one child died in infancy; for his third wife, he married Rachel ANTHONY; she was born in Butler CO., Penn., March 11, 1836. Emigrated to Franklin CO., Ohio; lived there sixteen years, thence to Jasper Co.; came through with teams; was thirty days making the trip; settled on a farm east of Vandalia; bought 700 acres of land with his father-in-law, Mr. McMELLEN, and lived in what was known as the old SHEARER house, the first Winter; has improved three farms; came here in limited circumstances; went into debt for $1,000 for his land, but not being afraid of work, and of a good constitution, he soon paid it off, and has come out conqueror; has a fine property; has good buildings, and is now ready to take the world easy; got his milling done at Oskaloosa, forty miles, and has also been to Keokuk for his groceries; was one of the men who were not afraid to turn out in an early day and face the hardships on these vast prairies; at the time he came, there was not a tree or a grove to be seen; Prairie City, Monroe and Newton, each had only a few house.

WIGGIN, A. J.
Farmer; P. O. Prairie City; was born in New Hampshire April 14, 1830; came to this county in 1857; has 130 acres of land, valued at $6,500. Is father of seven children-Mary, Norris, Philura, Carrie, Orrin, Martha, George. From New Hampshire went to California in 1857; lived there five years; thence came to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. At the time he came here, there was only one store on Prairie City. Mr. W. has a fine farm at the edge of Prairie City with the Agricultural Grounds on it. When he came here there was nothing but wild prairies, and went through all the privations of a pioneer. Enlisted in the 10th I. V. I., Regt., Co. I; was in the service three years; was in thirteen regular battles; at both of the battles of Corinth, siege of Vicksburg, Island No. 10, New Madrid, Mission Ridge; mustered out of the service at Kingston, Georgia, in 1864.

WILLIAMS, James M.
Farmer; Sec. 32; P. O. Monroe; was born in Randolph Co., North Carolina, January 15, 1815; owns 160 acres of land, valued at $40 per acre, and he is out of debt. His second wife, Lexa GUTHRIE, was born January 1, 1822; they were married December 11, 1856. Children by first wife-James G., born December 15, 1857; Leroy, born September 26, 1862. Mr. WILLKIAMS has two tame plum trees, two pear trees, 180 apple trees, and 300 grape vines. Mr. WILLIAMS enlisted in Co. G, 18th I. V. I., and was in the battles of Springfield, Missouri, Poison Spring, Saline River, and skirmished fifty days down the Red River, and back to Fort Smith under General STEELE. He is a Republican in politics.

WILSON, L. P.
Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 1; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Oneida Co., N. Y., July 16, 1822; came to this county in 1854; has 340 acres of land, valued at $20,000. Held the office of Constable in an early day. Married Nancy M. ORTON; she was born in the same county, Sept. 3, 1825; mother of eight children-Alva F., Eva M., Henry S., Maria J., Charley E., Hattie M., Emma E., Minnie M. Mr. W. emigrated from New York to Peoria CO., Ill., in 1834, with his parents before the Indians left that section; there were only two frame buildings and 200 inhabitants, where there is now a city if 35,000; thence to Jasper Co. where he has resided since; when he came here there were only two buildings in sight; he bought 560 acres of land for $1.25 per acre, and has improved his land, and by his exertion has brought it under the best of cultivation; moved into a shanty with a man of the name of ELLIOTT; stopped there four weeks while Mr. E. was east; when he came back, he brought two families besides his own, making four families in a shanty 18 x 22, and only one story, where twenty-nine or thirty persons lived four weeks; the first few years after he came here, he could buy buffalo meat for 1 cent per pound, and brought here from the Northwest; there were plenty of buffaloes within fifty miles; elk, deer, wolves, wild turkeys and prairie chickens were plenty; it was reported that one hunter killed forty-one elk in one day; he has ridden wolves down, and killed them with a club; he has backward and forward five times to Peoria Co., Ill., in what they called a prairie schooner; Mr. W. has a good home, and is one of the sound farmers.

ZACHARY, L. E.
President of the Banking House of DRAPER & ZACHARY; Prairie City; was born in Madison Co., Virginia, March 20, 1818; came to this county in the Fall of 1852; has 1,620 acres of land, valued at $48,000. Married Eliza BLEE; she was born in Highland Co., Ohio, August 16, 1819; mother of seven children-William James, Martha, Catherine, Larkin E., Emily F., Robert B., Eliza J., Left Virginia in 1839; came to Highland CO., Ohio; lived there eleven years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa, where he has resided since; from Ohio came down the Ohio River to Cairo, Illinois, thence up the Mississippi to Keokuk, Iowa; thence to this county by wagon and one horse; had $80 in his pocket and $129 due him in the East; was a poor man, but by his exertions has made a fine property, and is one of the largest land owners in the State; has about $40,000 in bank stock.
