67. Florence Hickman

Florence Krohn Services Held At Colfax Today

Colfax - Funeral services for Mrs. Frank M. (Florence) Krohn, 75, who died Friday at her home in Colfax, were held this afternoon at Walters Funeral Home in Colfax.

The Rev. Walter Goughnor, minister of the Christian Church in Prairie City, was in charge. Burial was in the Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.

Pallbearers were Wilford Bond, William Dolinsek, Clarence Faidley Jr., Harold Taylor, Martin Van Zee and Kenneth Winegar.

Mrs. Krohn was born April 22, 1891 in Newton to Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses Grant Hickman and lived most of her life in Prairie City and Colfax.

She was married to Frank M. Krohn Sept. 22, 1915, in Des Moines. He preceded her in death in 1951.

Survivors are a son, Frank M. Krohn, Jr., of Prairie City, three grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Mayme Herrington and Mrs. Belva Goeke of Newton, Mrs. Gladys Horn of Davenport and Mrs. Vanate Rutherford of Grinnell and one brother, Morris Hickman of Des Moines. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa, May 16, 1966, page 8.

Morris Hickman Dies Today; Services Monday

Morris Grant Hickman, 65, of 303 E. 16th St. N., Apt. No. 1, a resident of Newton since August, 1970, died today at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.

The Rev. Herold Harryman associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Saturday.

Survivors are his wife, Maggie; a son, Harold Hickman of Orange, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. LeRoy (Belva) Goeke of Newton and Mrs. Charley (Vaneta) Rutherford of Grinnell; and a nephew, Frank Krohn of Prairie City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Krohn of Colfax, Mrs. Gladys Horn of Davenport and Mrs. Mrs. Steve (Mamie) Herrington of Newton; and a brother Lawrence of Colfax.

Mr. Hickman had been employed as a automobile mechanic.

The son of Ulysses S. Grant and Dora Ellen Hurst Hickman, he was born Aug. 20, 1906 southeast of Colfax in Mound Prairie Township.

He was married to Maggie Akins Sept. 29, 1926 in Newton.

Mr. Hickman resided in Des Moines from 1941 until coming to Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, January 7, 1972

Obituary: Maggie A. Hickman

Mrs. Morris Grant (Maggie A.) Hickman, 79, a resident of Orange County, Calif., since 1973 and longtime resident of Jasper County, died Sunday, Jan. 15, in Orange, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Wallace Pence Funeral Home.

Dr. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday; Jan. 19.

Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Survivors are her husband, (?); and a sister, Edith Vance of Tempe, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jan. 7, 1972, three brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Hickman was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Iowa Genealogical Society.

The daughter of Gerritt V. and Mary C. Bailey Akins, she was born Sept. 30, 1904 in Jasper County. She was married Sept. 29, 1926 in Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, January 17, 1984.

BAXTER - Velma Marie Longren Engle, 67, of 210 W. Station Street, Baxter, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Sunday, Nov. 6, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of complications of diabetes.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Congregational United Church of Christ at Baxter.

The Rev. Charles Holmgren, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton after 1 p.m. Tuesday and visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may call at the church in Baxter after 12 noon Wednesday up until the time of the services.

Memorials to the American Diabetes Association will be accepted.

Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Diane and David and Lori, all of Baxter; three daughters, Linda (Mrs. Stanley) Osborn of Newton, Cathy (Mrs. Craig) Presnall of Sloan and Billie Jo Vansice of Baxter; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Carroll Longren of Baxter and Delia (Mrs. Lloyd) Butler of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold, May 25, 1994, and a sister, Lelia Forsinak.

Mrs. Engle, a member of the United Auto Workers, Local 997, Retirees Union, had been employed in the offices at the Maytag Dairy Farms and at the Maytag Co., at the Baxter Locker and was an inspector at the Maytag Co. for more than 22 years.

The daughter of Vern D. and Minnie Pearl Chapman Longren, she was born May 6, 1927 in Newton and was a 1945 graduate of Newton Community High School.

BAXTER - Harold C. Engle, 66, of 210 W. Station, Baxter, owner/operator of the Baxter Gun Club, died Wednesday, May 25, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton of cancer of the lungs.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Baxter Congregational Unite Church of Christ. Friends can call the church in Baxter after noon Saturday.

The Rev. Charles Holmgren, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton after 3 p.m. Friday and visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the church or to Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Velma; two sons, John and David, both of Baxter; three daughters, Linda (Mrs. Standley) Osborn of Newton, Cathy (Mrs. Craig) Presnall of Sloan and Billie Jo Vansice of Baxter; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
