Obituary

An Old Settler Gone

Mr. Anderson Vowell was born in Anderson county, Tenn., on the 8th day of February, 1804; was married to Margaret Wharton in 1825, and emigrated to Putnam county, Indiana, where he lived until 1849, when he came to Iowa, settling in Jasper in 1850. He lost his wife and two of his children in the fall 1854; and married Mrs. Marian Kelly in 1855; again in 1856 he lost his wife and two of his children, and in 1857 he married Miss Letty Calison [sic-Callison]. He has buried 9 children and has 10 living, he was attacked with a light stroke of Paralysis on the 8th of April, gradually growing worse until the 15th when he died. He was buried between his two first wives in the Newton cemetery. Thus passed from our midst a man of great constitution, and although unlettered, of more than ordinary ability. B. HURST ~ The Newton Journal, April 25, 1883.

I have found that the three of you posted information at Ancestry.com about Anderson Vowell. I made the discovery because my wife said: "Why don't you see if there is anything there that connects with my family." This morning I pulled a folder on Anderson Vowell that I have not opened for 38 years and discovered connections with your postings. I have a bit of information of interest I do not find in what you have listed:

1) We have a portrait of Anderson Vowell, my wife's g.g.g. grandfather.

2) The information we recorded is based on interviews in 1967 and 1968 with two of his great grandchilren: Leo Lloyd Cox (my wife's grandfather) and Nellie Violet (Cox) Maben (my wife's great aunt). Our information is founded only on memories and is thus therefore subject to documentation.

3) We have no information about Anderson Vowell's parents or other ancestors. Leo and Nellie could not remember anything farther back in time than to Anderson Vowell. Both were in their 80s in the 1960s when we did the interviews and recorded notes.

Briefly, since I believe you may be interested or part of a network of researchers on this family, I share with you some of what is in the file folder:

Anderson Vowell (8 Feb. 1801-15 Apr. 1883) married three times and had eighteen children. His wives and children follow:

3. Thomas Bannister Vowell (10 March 1830-?) [Note this man's middle name. Does it suggest he was named. for a grandfather, Bannister Vowell? There must be some connec tion. Thomas raised race horses.]
4. Nancy Vowell (8 Dec. 1832-?) married Burton Hurst
5. William T. Vowell (15 Dec. 1833-?)
6. Lucinda Vowell (18 Dec. 1834-?)

14. Minerva Alice Vowell (8 Sept. 1858-?) married John Drew
15. Louisiana Vowell (7 Nov. 1860-?) married George Washington Chapman
16. Calloway Vowell (22 May 1862-?) married 1) Emma Thompson who died in 1884; 2) Ella Mosher in 1888.17. Charles Vowell (4 Aug. 1866-5 Sept. 1867)
18. James Vowell (9 April 1868-? Nov. 1952) married 6 Sept. 1893 to Persis Bartlett

Anderson Vowell's second child, Bird Vowell (1829-1902) was a prominent resident of Coos County, Oregon. He and Mary Ann Malinda (Nolser) Vowell had seven children, of whom No. 6, Emily Etta Vowell who married Glenn.Burnett Cox was my wife's g.grandmother.

If you have further dates (such as of death), identity of spouses of the eighteen children listed above, or information on the ancestry of Anderson Vowell and his first wife, Margaret (Wharton) Vowell, we are much interested.

Obituary

Letty, daughter of Jas. And Louisiana Collison [sic-Callison] was born near Knoxville, Tenn. May 19, 1857 [sic-1835] and died at the home of her son Jas. C. Vowell, near Norwich, Kasa. Feb. 19, 1917 at the age of 79 years and nine months.

She moved with her parents to Iowa in 1855. She was married in 1857 to Anderson Vowel. To this union five children were born, four of which are living. One son, Charley, died in infancy. Those living are, Alice M. Oliver Alden, Kas, Louisiana Chapman Newton, Iowa, Calloway Vowell, Alberta, Canada and James C. Vowell, Norwich, Kansas. Her husband passed from this life in 1882.

The deceased has been a sufferer for many years, but thru it all she remained patient and kind. She took great pleasure in caring for the sick and helping others when they needed help. It was this cheerful disposition that enabled her to see life in its truest sense, and to keep an interest in the things about her to the very end. She received an injury in a fall in Sept. 1915 and in Dec. of the same year she received another fall from which she never recovered.

Mrs. Vowell became a member of the Christian Church almost a half century ago and always remained faithful to her Christ. She was a pioneer in both Iowa and Kansas; having come to this state in 1881.

She leaves besides her children, fifteen grandchildren and seven great grand children.

The funeral was held from the Christian Church at Norwich, Tuesday morning at 10:30, C.D. Walker pastor of the church having charge of the services.

The body was laid to rest in the Upchurch cemetery. ~ The Norwich Herald, Norwich, Kansas, Friday, February 23, 1917, page 1.
