400. Dorothy Edna MONROE
Dorothy he married Leroy Louis John Schaum, Jr. on 22 Nov 1950 and divorced him shortly thereafter; she married Dean Hammond on 10 January 1953. Their daughter, Rebecca Ann Hammond was born on 03 Nov 1953, in Belleville, Illinois. Dean was in the Air Force, and he died in Albuquerque, New Mexico on 12 March 1973. During their travels with the Air Force, Dorothy was lucky enough to see President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was a patient at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. at the same time she was. Becky is a schoolteacher in Breese, Illinois and she and Dorothy live in Lebanon. Dorothy remembers Christmases at home being very poor, but happy. Instead of the usual dolls or toys, each child would get an orange, a couple of nuts, and a couple of pieces of hard candy. Right before World War II the family ate nothing but mustard sandwiches for days.
