176. Alise Alberta Walker

(Research):Obituary: Alise M. Lawson

Alise Walker Lawson, 75, of 314 W. 5th St. S., a longtime resident of Newton, died of a heart attack Thursday evening, Feb. 9, at the Skiff Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Joseph L. Babcock, pastor of the Foursquare Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Sunday. Visitation with the family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are her husband, Mack; a son, Darrell Maxwell of San Antonio, Tex.; a daughter, Vivian (Mrs. Lyle) Heck of Newton; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her mother, Della Pearl Walker of Newton; a brother, Ivan Walker of Newton; and five sisters, Odetha (Mrs. Glen) Schnathorst of Indianola, LaVera Eaton, Yvonna (Mrs. Roy) Anderson and Della (Mrs. William) Moore, all of Newton; and Roberta (Mrs. James) Barkley of Wichita, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Mrs. Lawson, former owner-operator of the Maxwell Café and Grocery in Newton, had owned and operated the Beefburger Café in Lufkin, Tex.

Mrs. Lawson, a charter member of the Newton Foursquare Church, also had worked at Newton Manufacturing Co.

The daughter of John William and Della Pearl Hitchler Walker, she was born, Jan. 20, 1914 in Jasper County.

She was married to Mack Henry Lawson Dec. 28, 1986 in Newton.

177. LaVera Lucille Walker

Funeral services for LaVera Lucille Walker Eaton, 77, of Newton Health Care Center, formerly of 624 E 5th ST. S, a longtime resident of Newton, were held today, July 6, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. James Black, pastor of the Foursquare Church, assisted by the Rev. Ellen Deere, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation with the family was held Monday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials in her name will be accepted.

She died Saturday afternoon at the Care Center of complications of a stroke.

Survivors are a son and daugher-in-law, Marvin and Connie Eaton of Colfax; a daughter, Sandra (Mrs. Tom) Tinnermeier of Newton; three step -grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ivan Walker of Newton; and three sisters, Yvonna (Mrs. Roy) Anderson and Della Moore, both of Newton, and Roberta (Mrs. James) Barkley of Wichita, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her father, October, 1952, her husband, Elvin, Sept. 7, 1981; two sons, John Wayne in infancy, in October, 1941; and Wayne Edward, in April, 1958, and two sisters, Alise Maxwell Lawson, in February, 1989, and Odetha Schnathorst, in March, 1993.

Mrs. Eaton, a charter member of the Foursquare Church, was a homemaker and did babysitting most of her adult life for many, many children.

The daughter of John William and Della Pearl Hitchler Walker; she was born June 17, 1916 in Geddes, S.D.

She was married to Elvin Wayne Eaton July 26, 1941 in Lancaster, Mo.

Elvin Wayne Eaton

Elvin W. Eaton dies Monday; rites Wednesday. Elvin W. Easton, 60, of 624 E. 5th St. S., a lifelong resident of Newton, died Monday morning at the Skiff Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Funeral Home.

The Rev. Ellis Ryherd, pastor of the Foursquare Church, assisted by the Rev. Elvin Wells, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, LaVera Lucille; a son, Marvin Lee Eaton, Sr. of Newton; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph J. (Sandra Sue) Gobb of Newton; five grandchildren; a step-brother, Harold Wooten of Des Moines; and a step-sister, Mrs. Charlie (Mildred) Witt of Douds. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Wayne Edward in 1958, and an infant son.

The son of George J. and Ether Fuller Eaton, he was born March 25, 1921 in Newton. He was married to LaVera L. Walker July 26, 1941 in Lancaster, MO. ~ Newton Daily News, September 8, 1989


384. Wayne Edward Eaton

(Research):Wayne Eaton, 14, Dies Sunday

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m., at the Toland Funeral Home for Wayne Eaton, 14, who died at his home Sunday.

The youth had been ill for six years with a muscular disease. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Eaton, 624 East Fifth Street South.

He was born in Newton, August 6, 1943, and was a member of the Four Square church.

Rev. Earle O'Connell will officiate at the services and burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Surviving, besides his parents, are a sister, Sandra Sue; a brother, Marvin Lee, and his two grandmothers, Mrs. Pearl Walker, Newton, and Mrs. Ethel Eaton, Grundy Center. ~ The Newton Daily News, April 28, 1958.


Roy Lester Anderson

(Research):Funeral services for Roy L. Anderson, 79, 209 W. 9th St. N., a long-time resident of Newton, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. The Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the Congregational United Church of Christ will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. today and visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials in his name or to the Congregational United Church of Christ will be accepted. Mrs. Anderson died of heart failure Wednesday at his home.

Survivors are his wife, Yvonna; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Chris of Monroe, Steve and Judy of Cedar Rapids and Tom and Susan of Newton; three daughters, Helen (Mrs. Jerry) Banes of Cedar Rapids and Diane (Mrs. Mark) Babcock and Sally (Mrs. Bob) Colby, both of Newton; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers and sisters-in-law, Lee and Helen and the Rev. Allen and Louise , all of Newton, and Bob and Doris of Isle, Minn., and a sister Gladyce Anderson of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents, a 23-month-old son, BIllie and a son, Samuel, in infancy.

Mr. Anderson was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a truck driver for CGB Printing. The son of Clifford and Mayme Dunn Anderson, he was born Feb. 19, 1917 at Prairie City.He was graduated from Newton Community High School and IBM business courses. Funeral services for Della F. Moore, 71 of 915 W. 4th St. S., will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Foursquare Church with the Rev. James Black, pastor of the church and the Rev. Ellen Deere officiating. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Thursday. Visitation after 1 p.m. Thursday. Visitation with the family will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. She died Tuesday, April 15, of heart failure, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

The daughter of John W. and Della Pearl (Hitchler) Walker, she was born Sept 26, 1925, in Malaka Township. She married William L. "Bill" Moore April 23, 1944, in Newton. A lifelong resident of Jasper county she was employed by the Walker Cafe, Vernon Company and Newton Health Care Center. She was a member of the Foursquare Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Carol of Newton; a daughter, Maxine of Newton; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Yvonna Anderson of Newton, Ramah and Ivan Walker of Newton and Roberta and Jim Barkley of Wichita, Kan.; several nieces and nephews. William Lewis Moore

Funeral services for William L. "Bill" Moore, 64 of 915 W. 4th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1944, were held today, Nov 13, at the Foursquare Church. The Rev. James Black, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Joseph Babcock, pastor emeritus, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery. Visitation with the family was held Sunday at Wallace-Pence Fun earl Home. Memorial contributions to a fund in his name may be left at the funeral home. He died Friday at his home following a heart attack.
Survivors are his wife, Della; a son, Don of Newton; a daughter, Maxine Moore of Newton; two grandchildren; and a brother Marvin Moore of Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Mr. Moore, a member of the Foursquare Church, had worked in maintenance at the Maytag Co. until retiring May 31, 1976. The son of Homer and Sarah Beason Moore, he was born Aug. 17, 1925 in Montezuma and attendedLaurel schools. 400. Maxine Elaine Moore

Maxine “Max” Elaine Moore, 59, of #3 S. Hampton Ct. in Newton died Monday,
March 15, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:20 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral
Home in Newton. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be held Thursday from 12 pm. until the time
of the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Maxine’s name.

The daughter of William L. and Della Walker-Moore, she was born November 25, 1944 in Newton. She was a graduate of the Newton Senior High School Class of 1963. She graduated from the Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines. She was a lifelong resident of Newton and was a self-employed beautician for 30 years.

She attended the Foursquare Church in Newton and enjoyed music and her
piano.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Dona and Carol Moore of

183. Rosemond Ilee Baty

(Research):DEATH: Newton Daily News: POLICE CONTINUE PROBE OF FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT Newton police are continuing their investigation into a pedestrian-pickup truck accident at the northwest corner of the Newton downtown square Saturday morning. The accident took the life of 57-year-old Rosemond Edwards of 1209 N. 4th Ave. W.
Driver of the pickup truck, David W. Snoddy, 25, of Grinnell, in being held in Jasper County jail on a parole violation. He was on parole to the Central Iowa Foundation for Alcoholism for an earlier conviction. Witnesses to the 9:03 a.m. accident said the Snoddy vehicle was southbound on West 2nd St. N. and did not stop at the stop sign but veered across the intersection striking the Newton Home Savings and Loan and then striking Mrs. Edwards before coming to rest.
According to police reports, Snoddy said he was going to park the truck but remembers nothing after that. Other witnesses said Snoddy appeared to have suffered some sort of seizure but it was not confirmed. The truck, owned by I.J. Guidry of the Coralville Roofing Company received an approximate $2000 damage.
Mrs. Edwards' son told Newton police that they had parked their vehicle north of the Newton Home Savings and Loan on their way to the jewelry store and then heard the truck hit the building next door. He did not see the mishap occur.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home. The Rev. Joe Alexander of Elizabeth City, N.C., former pastor of the Newton Full Gospel Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Survivors are her husband, six sons, Lee Edwards of Stone Mountain, Ga., the Rev. Clifford Edwards and David Edwards, both of Newton, Richard Edwards of Iowa City and Brian and Max Edwards, both at home; two daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Gloria) Spencer of Decatur, Ga., and Carol Edwards of Avondale Estates, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and her mother, Mrs. Lola Baty of Newton.
Also surviving are two brothers, Carrol and John Baty, both of California; and eight sisters, Mrs. Virgil (Miriam) Hayes, Mrs. Max (Lorraine) Specht and Mrs. Bill (Doris) Immell, all of California, Mrs. Gerald (Pauline) Britsch of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Gordon (Faith) Specht of Lamar, Colo., Mrs. Lynn (Junella) Shunk of Perinton, Mich., and Mrs. Vernon (Winona) Tool and Mrs. Alfred (Dena) Couch Sr., both of Newton. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Elda.
Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Full Gospel Church. She had been employed by the Rest Haven Nursing Home. The daughter of Roy Newton and Lola Hitchler Baty, she was born Oct. 12, 1918 in Newton and attended Newton schools.


Wilbur Eugene Edwards

Wilbur Eugene Edwards, 75, of Rt. 4, Newton, a longtime resident of Newton, died early today, Feb. 28, at his farm home following a heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. The Rev. Clifford Edwards and the Rev. John Moorloch will conduct services. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, the former Rosemond Baty, Oct 18, 1975, and an infant grandchild.

The son of Edgar Jefferson and Bertha Hammer Edwards, he was born Feb. 2, 1916 in Ames. He was married to Neola Meredith Brayton March 25, 1980 in Newton. Mr. Edwards had resided in Georgia for two years. Wilbur was the vice president of Thombert, Inc., a plastics fabrication firm in Newton. AZUSA, Calif. Ñ Miriam Baty Hayes of Azusa, Calif., a former Newton resident, died Monday, Feb. 6, of complications following heart by-pass surgery. Services and burial will be in California. Survivors are her husband, Virgil; a son, Virgil Jr. of Pamona, Calif.; two daughters, Ruth Dickens of Mount Vernon, Mo. and Betty Milius of Valinda, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her mother, Lola Baty; six sisters, Doris Immell, Winona Clark and Dena Couch, all of Newton, Lorraine Specht of Lompoc, Calif., Faith Specht of Lamar, Colo. and Junella Shunk of London, Ohio; and two brothers, John Baty of Pamona, Calif., and Carrol Baty of El Monte, Calif. William E Immell

Bill had two children by a previous marriage: Wayne and Deborah.

William E. "Bill" Immell, 60, of 1538 W 14th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1988, died Monday evening, Sept. 4, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Graveside rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Adams, associate pastor of the Community Heights Alliance Church, will conduct services. Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after noon Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions to the American Lung Association will be accepted.
Survivors are his wife, Doris; a son, Wayne of Riverside, Calif.; two daughters, Judith (Mrs. Michael) Hartman of West Covina, Calif.; and Deborah (Mrs. Sheldon) Gill of Murrieta, Calif; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, June (Mrs. John) Burns of Indianapolis, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Immell, a Navy veteran of World War II, was in the printing industry. A self-employed lithographer, Mr. Immell had owned M & M Photo Plate Co. of Los Angeles, Calif. The son of Marshall and Cleo Myers Immell, he was born July 22, 1929 at Greenwood, Ind., attended Indianapolis, Ind. schools and was graduated from high school in the Hawaiian Islands.
He was married to Doris Baty Oct. 26, 1961 in Arcadia, Calif. Mr. Immell had resided in Big Bear Calif., for nearly six years before moving to Oklahoma for four years, prior to moving to Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, Sept 5, 1989.
