125. Lester Emerson Hardenbrook

Lester "Hap" Hardenbrook Funeral services for Lester "Hap" Hardenbrook, 76, of 443 Hwy 14, S., will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Reformed Church with the Rev. DuWayne Hanke, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the church. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Memorial in Mr. Hardenbrook's name will be accepted.

Mr. Hardenbrook died of respiratory failure Wednesday , April 8, at the Newton Heath Care Center.

The son of Evan and Meta Bunse Hardenbrook, he was born March 4, 1922, in Newton. H graduated from Newton High School in 1939.

He married Julia Ann Birkenholtz Nov 2, 1950, in Nashua at the Little Brown Church.

A lifelong resident of Newton, Mr. Hardenbrook was employed by the Newton Gas Company, farmed near Newton for 22 years and was employed by the United Sates Postal Service as a mail carrier. H was a member of the Community Reformed Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent and church treasurer. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Beth of Newton; two grandchildren; two brothers, Dan and Paul, both of Newton; a sister, Lela Murphy of Newton;a and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a granddaughter and four brothers. - Newton Daily News, April 10, 1998


Julia Johanna Birkenholtz

(Research):Julia "Ann" Hardenbrook Julia "Ann" Hardenbrook, 74, of 4453 Hwy 14 S. died of Septicemia, Wednesday, June 25, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Community Reformed Church with the Rev. DuWayne Hanke, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Community Reformed Church.

Memorials in Mrs. Hardenbrook's name will be accepted.

The daughter of Elmer and Julia DeBruyn Birkenholtz, she was born July 3, 1934, In Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1941. She married Lester Hardenbrook Nov. 2, 1950, in Nashua.

A lifelong resident of Newton, she was employed by Spurgeons as an office clerk. She was a member of the Community Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School for several years.

Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie Gene and Beth of Newton; two grandchildren; three sisters, Engeline (Mrs. Hugh) Jarnagin of Prairie City, Mary (Mrs. Leland) Ball of Newton and Ruth (Mrs. Robert) Pauls of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter; two brothers; and a sister. - Newton Daily News, June 26, 1997.

Altoona - Edward G. "Pete" Hardenbrook, 59, of Altoona, a native and former resident of Newton, died Monday, March 21, at the Mercy Hospital Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Grandview Funeral Home in Des Moines. The Rev. Harlan Winter, pastor of the Altoona United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Private burial services will be conducted.
Survivors are his wife, Darlene; a daughter, Pam Crawford of Des Moines; and a grandson, Nicholas Crawford of Des Moines. Mr. Hardenbrook also is survived by a sister, Lela Murphy of Newton;' and five brothers, Lester, Elvin, Dan and Paul, all of Newton, and Cleo of Colfax. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Walter.
Mr. Hardenbrook was a member of the Altoona United Methodist Church. He was a longtime employee of the Firestone Co. In Des Moines, retiring in 1980. He was born and raised in Newton. ~ Newton Daily News, March 22, 1988


129. Paul Arson Hardenbrook

Paul A. Hardenbrook, 64, of 378 N. 59th Ave., E., died of heart failure, Monday, April 5, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Friday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials to the 4-H Fairgrounds of Jasper County will be accepted.

The son of Evan and Meta Bunse Hardenbrook, he was born Dec. 13, 1934, in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1954. He married Wanda Hansen Aug. 28, 1960, in Colfax.

A lifelong resident of Newton, Mr. Hardenbrook was employed by the Jasper County Coal Company, Kellogg Hardware Store, KeWash Ready Mix, Watters Lumber and owned his own window repair shop. He was a member of the Redman at Crow Tribe No. 25 in Colfax, Dance Club of Malcom, bingo caller and he was a 4-H superintendent of the Jasper County Fair for several years and a member of the fair board.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Iris and Rob Taylor of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. and Rose and Tony Halligan of Rolfe; a sister and brother-in-law, Lela and Dan Murphy of Newton; a brother and sister-in-law, Bonnie and Norinne Hardenbrook, both of Newton and Darlene Hardenbrook of Des Moines; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister-in-law. - Newton Daily News, April 6, 1999


Marion W. Rozenberg

Marion Rozenberg

Marion "Rozy" Rozenberg, 70, 710 S. 2nd Ave. W., a resident of Newton since 1938, died of cancer at his home Monday, Sept. 30. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after noon today.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Zora D; a son, Willis "Willie" of West Des Moines; two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Ron) Parrish of Monroe and Judy )Mrs. Harry) Dearinger of Newton; six granddaughters; and three great-granddaughters.

Also surviving are two brothers, Andrew Rozenberg of Pella and Ben Rozenberg of Urbandale, and a sister, Dena Gertsma of Newton.

Mr. Rozenberg was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Henry, Dick, and Jacob.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Rozenberg was employed at the Maytag Co. for 30 years, 21 years in security and later in parts distribution, prior to his retirement in 1979.

The son of William and Margaret Van Hulzen Rozenberg, he was born Nov. 4, 1920 at Pella and attended rural schools in the Otley area. He was married to Zora D. Huff June 8, 1938 at Princeton, Mo. ~ Newton Daily News, October 1, 1991.


137. Arlo John Huff

Arlo John Huff, 74, of 314 E. 15th St. N., died of heart failure Friday evening, Oct. 4, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Matthew Martens, pastor of the First Lutheran Church in Newton, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home today where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials to the Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.

Mr. Huff was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Murphy, the son of Dolar and Elsie Hardenbrook Huff. He attended Newton schools.

A resident of Newton most of his life, he married Elizabeth A. Graf Oct. 14, 1944, in San Francisco, Calif. Following her death March 30, 1990, he married Rosella Van Pelt Obst April 23, 1992, in Newton.

He was employed at the Maytag Company, retiring from the receiving department Jan. 31, 1980. He was a member of the Jasper County Genealogical Society and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp.

Survivors include his second wife; a son, Charles D. of Newton' a daughter, Barbara Van Rees of Monroe; and two step-daughters and their husbands, Linda and Frank Altimeier and Jeanette and Steven McVay, all of Newton. Also surviving are six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; a brother and his wife, Wendall and Pat Huff of Newton; a sister, Zora Rozenberg of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his firs wife and a sister in infancy. ~ Newton Daily News, Oct. 5-7, 1996


Betty (Elizabeth) Graf

Funeral services for Elizabeth A. Graf Huff, 77, of 314 E 15hth St. N., a resident of Newton since 1946, were held today, April 2, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerald Logsdon, pastor of the Assemblies of God of Des Moines, conducted services. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton. Visitation with the family was held Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.

She died Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Barbara VanRees of Monroe, of cancer. Also surviving are her husband, Arlo J.; a son, Charles D. of Newton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. The daughter of Anthony and Theresa Kerchner Graf, she was born June 27, 1912 in Emmaus, PA. She was married to Arlo J. Huff Oct 14, 1944 in San Francisco, Calif. Rosella L. Obst Huff, 66, of 714 1st St. S., died of heart failure Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996, at Skiff Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace Pence Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Matthew Martens, pastor of First Lutheran Church in Newton, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial park Cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. today with family visitation from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Wallace Pence Funeral Home. Memorials may be left to Hospice of Jasper County.

Survivors include a step-son Charles D. Huff of Newton; two daughters, Linda (Mrs. Frank) Altemeier of Newton and Jeanette (Mrs. Steven) McVay of Newton; a step-daughter, Barbara Van Rees of Altoona; a brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Violet Van Pelt of Spirit Lake; two sisters, Eleanor Phelps of Milford and Stella Glover of Soap Lake, Wash.; three grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, six great-step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clifford Van Pelt in 1986, and her first husband, Lloyd F. Obst, on Jan. 14, 1977, and her second husband, Arlo J. Huff, on Oct. 4, 1996.

The daughter of George and Maude L. Provancha Van Pelt, she was born Feb. 12, 1930 in Obert, Neb.

A resident of Newton since 1950, she married Lloyd F. Obst March 11, 1948 in Wayne, Neb. She worked as a waitress in Nebraska until moving to Newton where she worked at the Vernon Company until retiring in January 1992.

She was married to Arlo J. Huff on April 23, 1992 at Newton. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Newton. ~ Newton Daily News, October 21, 1996.
