2 CONT She was preceded in death by her parents and three infant brothers.

2 CONT Mrs. Dodd, a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, a monthly neighborhood clu
2 CONC b, the ODO; had taught Jasper County county schools for three years and had worked at the Ver
2 CONC non Co. for 16 years.

2 CONT The daughter of William G. and Izora Mae Cross Poulson, she was born Jan. 27, 1899 north of C
2 CONC olfax, was a 1918 graduate of Baxter Community High School and received her teacher’s c
2 CONC ertificate from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls.

2 CONT Mrs. Dodd, who enjoyed reading, handiwork, crocheting and pillow embroidering, lived in Baxte
2 CONC r until moving to Newton in 1941. She resided in Newton until moving to the health center i

2 CONT John Houck was born in Smallenburg, Germany, April 2nd, 1814; landed in the United States i
2 CONC n 1828, spending six years in Pennsylvania, twenty in Ohio, and coming to Iowa in 1854, and t
2 CONC o Jasper County in 1857, settling near Newton, where he spent the last 21 years of his life
2 CONC , which terminated on the morning of Oct. 20, 1878, aged 64 years.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Six months of intense suffering was borne patiently, and having arranged all his worldly affa
2 CONC irs, with mind at peace, he anxiously awaited the time when his Master's Will would permit hi
2 CONC m to again become a traveler, having full faith in the promise of him who said, "I will neve
2 CONC r leave thee nor forsake thee," to conduct him safely through the valley and aid him triumpha
2 CONC ntly on the other shore. The choice of his youth and companion of his many years, with thre

2 CONT Mrs. Houck was a victim of consumption that from the ravages of which dread disease her syste
2 CONC m had such wasting for a long time. With her husband she came from Ohio, her native state, t
2 CONC o Iowa in 1856, and for a year their home was in Wayne county. In 1857 they removed to Jaspe
2 CONC r county which was since her home. Mr. Houck died about two years ago, at Metz, and was inter
2 CONC red there, and in the same cemetery last Thursday his life partner was laid by his side, man
2 CONC y citizens of Colfax attending the funeral. Mrs. Houck, like her husband, had long been a mem
2 CONC ber of the M. E. church, and a minister of that denomination conducted the obsequies. Two dau
2 CONC ghters and a son remain to mourn her loss and remember and emulate her many virtues. She ha

2 CONT This morning at 8 o'clock occurred the death of Mr. Henry Clinton Houck at the home of his so
2 CONC n-in-law, Gene Errett.

2 CONT Mr. Houck had been in poor health for some time and for the past two weeks he has been confin
2 CONC ed to his bed and has been a great sufferer. His wife died a number of years ago, and since t
2 CONC hat time he has made his home with Mr. Errett.

2 CONT Mr. Houck is well known in Newton and vicinity and many will be sorry to learn of his death
2 CONC . He was seventy years of age, and until only a short time ago he had been quite active fo
2 CONC r a man of his advanced years.

2 CONT The funeral of the late Henry Houck was held at the Congregational church Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

2 CONT Dr. Geo H. Kemp gave a short address which was followed by the G.A.R. service after which th
2 CONC e Masons took charge of the services, part of which was given in the church and the balance a
2 CONC t the cemetery near Metz, where he now lies beside his wife who died a number of years ago.

2 CONT O. N. Wagley, who gives the Masonic burial service beautifully gave it Sunday in a very impre
2 CONC ssive manner.

2 CONT Miss Carrie Miles sang as solos, "Jesus, Savior, Pilot me" and "Nearer, my God, to Thee." Mrs
2 CONC . Fiske play her accompaniments.

2 CONT The pallbearers were J. R. Hall, Andy Howard, Lee Westbrook, H. S. Efnor, John Hartwig, and J

2 CONT Little Elizabeth Errett, the only grandchild, Chas. Houck, a brother, and his wife of Des Moi
2 CONC nes, a sister, Mrs. Izora Shipley of Washington D.C., Bert Cross of Winterset, a nephew; Mr
2 CONC . & Mrs. Tom Kennedy of this city and Mrs. A Holliwell of Mitchellville, relatives of Mrs. He
2 CONC nry Houck, and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Temple, of Des Moines, Mrs. Gene Errett's parents, were h
2 CONC ere for the funeral.

2 CONT Henry Clinton Houck was born in Carey, Wyandotte county, Ohio, Mar. 18, 1842. With his parent
2 CONC s he came to Iowa in 1854 and settled in Wayne county. In 1857 they moved to Jasper county.
2 CONT 
2 CONT On August 9th, 1862, he enlisted in Co. K, 28th Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served three year
2 CONC s receiving an honorable discharge July 31st 1865.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He took part in the following battles: Port Gibson, May 1st, 1863, Champion Hill, Vicksburg L
2 CONC anding; Edwards Station, Sabin Cross Roads, Cane River, Middle Bayou, Manasuri, Yellow Bayou
2 CONC , Opequam, Va. Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek.He was married on April 11th, 1869 to Sarah E. S
2 CONC ims in Newton. Two children were born to them, one who died at the age of three and a half ye
2 CONC ars and Linnie Houck Errett, who died two and a half years ago.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He died Thursday morning, October 24th 1912, at his late residence with the Gene Erretts on S
2 CONC outh Second Avenue West.

2 CONT The Henry Houcks lived on a farm west of the city for many years then they came into the cit
2 CONC y and opened a restaurant, first where the Jasper County Bank now stands, then on the east si
2 CONC de and finally where the Star theatre now is, up until fourteen years ago, when he retired.

2 CONT Charles G. Houck, son of John and Ellen Houck, was born four miles west of Newton on Jan. 11
2 CONC , 1859, and died Sept. 21, 1933, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

2 CONT He was united in marriage to Susie E. Helphrey on Dec. 8, 1881. Mr. and Mrs. Houck lived in D
2 CONC es Moines for more than 40 years before moving to Coeur d'Alene last April. Mr. Houck was ass
2 CONC istant Polk county clerk for 12 years, serving until last spring.

2 CONT He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Mac, Henry, John and William and tw
2 CONC o sisters Lavonia Cross and Izora Shipley.

2 CONT Surviving relatives include his widow; four nieces, Mrs. Mae Poulson and Mrs. Stella Jontz o

2 CONT Mr. Houck was a member of the Methodist church, the Des Moines Lodge No. 25, I.O.O.F. of De

2 CONT Funeral rites were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26, at 3:00 o'clock from the Morgan Fun
2 CONC eral home in Newton, with Rev. A. J. Biel, associate pastor of the St. John's Lutheran churc
2 CONC h of Des Moines, in charge.  Rev. W. S. Kight of Des Moines was the honorary minister. L. W

2 CONT Mrs. Henry Houck, after a lingering and wasting sickness of eighteen months, quietly left he
2 CONC r frail bodily tenement last Friday afternoon, at 2:20 o'clock, for the home where no sicknes
2 CONC s is, where the Lamb is the light thereof. For days she had been lingering on the borderline
2 CONC , so the charge was made without a jar, simply going to sleep.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Sarah Elizabeth Sims was born in Greencastle, Indiana, July 24th, 1849. Moved to Iowa with he
2 CONC r parents in 1855, when she was six years old, the family locating on a farm in Sherman towns
2 CONC hip, Jasper county. There she grew to womanhood.
2 CONT 
2 CONT On April 11th, 1869, she was married to Henry Houck. The two went to housekeeping on Mr. Houc
2 CONC k's father's farm. A year later, Mr. H. bought a farm near Lone Rock school house, where the
2 CONC y lived until they came to town.
2 CONT 
2 CONT They have had two children, both girls. The oldest died when she was three years old, and Mis
2 CONC s Linnie, now grown to be a young lady, is the only living child.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Thirteen years last October, the family moved to Newton, when Mr. Houck started into the rest
2 CONC aurant business, which has been continued ever since.
2 CONT 
2 CONT She leaves a father, four sisters and two brothers, all who attended the funeral except for o
2 CONC ne sister, Mrs. William Moffitt, who lives in Howard, Nebraska.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mrs. Houck was a very hard working, painstaking, patient woman, devoted to the interests of h
2 CONC er husband and daughter, almost always at home, giving all her energies to the advancement an
2 CONC d success of her dear ones.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Her death-bed has been a peculiarly beautiful and happy one. A number of weeks ago, she foun
2 CONC d great peace and joy in the Savior's love. Four weeks ago, though not able to leave her bed
2 CONC , she was received into full communion as a member of the Congregational church, was baptize
2 CONC d and partook of the Lord's Sacrament, something she had longed to do for a long time. As th
2 CONC e days went by and she felt herself slipping away from earth, her joy increased, for she real
2 CONC ized that Heaven was near and that only a short time intervened until she would join that inn
2 CONC umerable throng that had "washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the lamb,
2 CONC " who are "before the throne of God, serving him day and night in His temple."

2 CONT She greeted her friends joyously and affectionately, and her radiant face and glowing words b
2 CONC rought Heaven very near to those who visited her.

2 CONT The funeral was held in the Congregational church on Sabbath morning, April 7th, 1895, at 9:3
2 CONC 0 o'clock, the pastor of the church giving the sermon. After appropriate words and music, th
2 CONC e body was viewed by friends. The interment was made in the Metz cemetery. Army comrades of M
2 CONC r. Houck acted as pall-bearers. A large company of friends were gathered at the cemetery fro
2 CONC m the Metz neighborhood, to who a few words were addressed by the pastor.~ The Newton Journal

2 CONT With feelings of profound sorrow, the many friends of Mrs. Henry Houck, learned on Friday aft
2 CONC ernoon that she had gone to rest -- and her long suffering was at an end. Some eighteen month
2 CONC s ago her health began to break, and soon it became evident to herself and friends that consu
2 CONC mption, cruel and relentless, had marked her for its victim. The kindliest ministrations of l
2 CONC oving, friends, and the skill of physicians, failed to check its progress. For several week
2 CONC s her spirit has been merely hovering on the shores of time, waiting and anxious to welcome a
2 CONC t any moment the sound of the "boatsmans oar" that would carry her safely beyond life's chang
2 CONC ing tide, into the haven of eternal rest.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mrs. Houck's maiden name was Sarah Elizabeth Sims, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Squire Si
2 CONC ms, of Sherman tp. She was born in Green Castle, Indiana, July 24, 1849. In 1855 the parent
2 CONC s came to Jasper co., and settled in Sherman township, 4 1/2 miles west of Newton.
2 CONT 
2 CONT She was united in marriage to H. C. Houck on the 11th of April, 1869. Two daughters were give
2 CONC n to them, the elder dying in early childhood, the younger, Miss Linnie, now grown to young w
2 CONC omanhood, surviving to comfort her father.
2 CONT 
2 CONT They left their farm home about 13 years ago, and came to town, where they have since resided
2 CONC . Although of a very retiring disposition, her home, husband and daughters being her chief ca
2 CONC re, she made friends of all with whom she came in contact. Her christianity was of the pures
2 CONC t type, which sustained her in health as well as during her long illness.

2 CONT Besides her husband and daughter, she leaves an aged father, four sisters and two brothers, a
2 CONC ll of whom , with the exception of one sister, were present at the funeral which occurred a
2 CONC t the Congregational church at 9:30 a.m., last Sunday, being very largely attended by sympath
2 CONC izing neighbors and friends. Her pastor, Mr. Hartog, preached an excellent discourse, payin
2 CONC g a beautiful tribute to the life and christian character of the deceased. The remains were t

2 CONT After many months of suffering with a dreaded tubercular trouble, Mrs. E. M. Errett passed aw
2 CONC ay this afternoon at 12:30 o’clock at her home, 112 East Marion street. Her relatives and fri
2 CONC ends have known for months that death might result at any time, but the end was unexpected, a
2 CONC nd those who have been nearest to the deceased during the last weeks find that a sorrow has n
2 CONC ow been thrust upon them for which they were wholly unprepared.

2 CONT The deceased was formerly Miss Linnie Houck of this city. She has hosts of friends in Newto
2 CONC n and vicinity who will be grieved to learn of her untimely death. She leaves a father, Henr
2 CONC y Houck, of Newton, a husband and a little daughter, Elizabeth, who is just three years old
2 CONC . The deceased’s husband is one of the prominent grocers of Newton.

2 CONT Linnie E. Houck was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Houck. She was born on a farm wes
2 CONC t of town June 3, 1875. Her girlhood and young womanhood days were spent on the farm. The mot
2 CONC her of the deceased passed away in April 1895. After the mother’s death the daughter and fath
2 CONC er came to Newton. On August 15, 1905, deceased was united in marriage to Eugene Errett. To t
2 CONC his happy union one child was given - baby Elizabeth, now three years old. She is a sweet lov
2 CONC able child and was a great comfort to the mother during her weary months of suffering.

2 CONC ted to complications from a broken hip suffered in a fall in her room at a local nursing home
2 CONC . She was admitted to the hospital on June 14.

2 CONT The daughter of Louis and Ann Koontz Helphrey, she was born on a farm southwest of Newton, Ju
2 CONC ly 8, 1861, and received her education in the rural schools of Jasper county. She was marrie
2 CONC d to Charles G. Houck, Dec. 8, 1881. Following her marriage she moved to Colfax where Mr. Hou
2 CONC ck operated a business. In 1888 they moved to Des Moines where Mr. Houck was associated i
2 CONC n a meat market and served as Polk county auditor for 12 years. They later moved to Couer d'A
2 CONC lene, Idaho.

2 CONT After the death of her husband in 1938 Mrs. Houck returned to Des Moines where she made her h
2 CONC ome until suffering a stroke a year ago, and was brought to the nursing home in Newton.
2 CONT She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters.

2 CONT Survivors include a nephew, W. L. Aillaud, and a niece, Mrs. W. Allen Moore of Newton, an
2 CONC d a nephew, Dr. H. C. Aillaud of Rockwell City; and nieces, Mrs. Ben Apgar, Centerville; Mrs

2 CONC ty-four years. He served in the army as a member of the 9th Iowa Cavalry. He was a good citiz
2 CONC en and a brave soldier. He leaves a wife and six children. The funeral occurred at the home a
2 CONC t 2 o'clock yesterday. Henry Houck of this city and Mrs. Zora Shipley of Chicago - brother an

2 CONT David Young Cross was born near Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, January 3rd, 1842. He cam
2 CONC e with his parents to Newton, Iowa, in the fall of 1857, where he lived four years. From then
2 CONC ce he removed to a farm nine miles north west of the same place where he lived until the spri
2 CONC ng of 1863 when he attained his majority and enlisted in Company L of the 9th Regiment of Iow
2 CONC a Volunteer cavalry, and remained in the service of his country until victory crowned the sac
2 CONC rifice, toil, hardships and dangers of the nations noble sons, when at the close of the war
2 CONC , with an honorable discharge he returned to his home and loved ones and resumed his duties o
2 CONC n the farm as a citizen of Jasper county.
2 CONT 
2 CONT On March 19th, 1872 he was united in marriage to Livona Jane Houck. This union gave them fou
2 CONC r children, viz: Haliburton Zane, Willis McDonough, Izora May, and Estella Grace. In the spri
2 CONC ng of 1878, owing to the ill helath of his wife he sold his farm and moved to Colfax where h
2 CONC e engaged in the harness business and afterwards run what is now the A. A. Penaquite hardwar
2 CONC e store. On September 11th, 1882, his beloved wife died leaving him to care for his motherles
2 CONC s little ones.
2 CONT 
2 CONT About one year after the death of his wife he moved to the farm north of Colfax where in a sh
2 CONC ort time his health became broken, and has not since been able to perform manuel labor. On Se
2 CONC ptember 10th, 1888 he was married to Alice M. Mowry. To them have been born two children, viz
2 CONC : David Harrison and John Loren. God has spared all his children to him but has now given hi

2 CONT Ellenor Louise Houck, daughter of McDonald and Kathryn Houck was born April 6, 1869, at Calif
2 CONC ornia, Mo., and died at her home in the Maple Grove community March 20, 1934, at the age of 6
2 CONC 4 years, 11 months and 14 days. Her parents died during her early childhood and she came wit
2 CONC h her grandmother to make her home in the family of G. A. Lunde where she grew to maturity. S
2 CONC he attended Maple Grove school and also attended high school at Humboldt. She was very fond o
2 CONC f music and taught music for some years. To all who knew her well, she was familiarly known a
2 CONC s Ella. She had a natural talent for beauty and was a lover of flowers and the beauties of na
2 CONC ture.
2 CONT 
2 CONT She was married to Jesse L. Jackson February 25, 1902, and to this union were born a daughte
2 CONC r and a son. Those remaining in this bereavement are her husband, J. L. Jackson, daughter, Mr
2 CONC s. Robert L. Watts of Yates Center, and son, Noel L. Jackson of the Maple Grove community. Th
2 CONC ere are two grandsons, Gale and Lyle watts. Also there remain her uncle, G. A. Laude, and oth
2 CONC er relatives, and a host of friends.

2 CONT She was confirmed in the Lutheran church in her girlhood. Later she transferred her membershi
2 CONC p to the Maple Grove United Bretheren church. She was always faithful in her church attendanc
2 CONC e and in Christian living. The family alter and the reading of the Bible were a continual pra
2 CONC ctice in her home. This community is richer for her having lived and her passing will not clo
2 CONC se the influence of this noble Christian life.

2 CONT Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. A. Pauli at the Maple Grove church. Burial was i

2 CONT Was married to Isora Houck in 1868 [actually Dec. 7, 1867] and a few years later they moved t
2 CONC o Des Moines, where they resided until about a year and a half ago when they moved to Chicago
2 CONC , which place has been their home since.

2 CONT At the funeral services held in Chicago Monday, at 4 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Martin
2 CONC , of Grace M. E. church, the hymns “Asleep in Jesus” and “Nearer My God to Thee
2 CONC ,” were sung at the request of the deceased.

2 CONT The remains were brought to Newton Tuesday morning, accompanied by his wife and only daughter
2 CONC , Carrie.  They were met there by a large number of relatives and friends. Eight members of M
2 CONC r. Shipley’s old company acted as pallbearers. The interment was in Newton cemetery, wh
2 CONC ere prayer was offered by Rev. Brooks, after which all there remained of a noble, brave and p

2 CONC ens, William G. Poulson.Mr. Poulson died at 11:55 o'clock Thursday forenoon, having submitt
2 CONC ed to an operation early that morning at the Skiff Memorial hospital in Newton for obstructio
2 CONC n of the bowels, Mr. Poulson had been ill about 48 hours, having taken ill in Newton. He wa
2 CONC s taken to his home, and his condition became such that it was necessary to remove him to th
2 CONC e hospital in Newton Wednesday night.Mr. Poulson was widely known in northwest Jasper count
2 CONC y, having spent practically his entire life in this section of the county. He lived on the pr
2 CONC esent farm one and one-fourth miles west of Baxter for the past 30 years. He has been activ
2 CONC e in farming and has since the founding of the Baxter Grain and Coal Company, served as presi
2 CONC dent of the company.He was honest, upright citzen and his loss will be keenly felt by his b
2 CONC usiness associates as well as his bereaved family and friends.Funeral services were conduct
2 CONC ed at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Community Congregational Church in Baxter, and inte
2 CONC rment was made in Restland cemetery in Baxter. The rites were in charge of the Rev. B. W. Nor
2 CONC throp.Music for the service consisted of quartet music by Mrs. C. F. Weeks, Mrs. A. J. Dodd
2 CONC , Dwight Hunt, and Guy T Hardenburgh, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me.
2 CONC " A vocal solo, "In the Garden," was sung by Roy Hefti, music supervisor in the local school
2 CONC . The accompaniment was played by Mrs. E. J. Goodwin.Those serving as pallbearers were Simo

2 CONT William Grant Poulson, son of John Wesley and Rachel Elizabeth Poulson, was born in Poweshie
2 CONC k township, Jasper County , Iowa August 4, 1872, and passed away at the Skiff Memorial Hospit
2 CONC al in Newton, Iowa January 28th, 1937, at the age of 64 years 6 months 64 days.He was unite
2 CONC d in marriage to Izora Mae Cross on February 26th, 1896. To this union four children were bor
2 CONC n, of whom three died in infancy. Mr. Poulson leaves to morn his loss his widowed wife; one d
2 CONC aughter, Mrs. Reeta Livona Dodd, one granddaughter, Marjorie Dodd; two brothers George of Gra
2 CONC nda, Minn., and Lester of Valeria, Iowa; and one sister Mrs. Minnie Schwab of Lewiston, Monta
2 CONC na.With the exception of a few years spent in Madison County, Iowa and a short time in Cali
2 CONC fornia, Mr. Poulson spent his entire life in Jasper county having lived on the farm west of B
2 CONC axter for the past thirty years.Mr. Poulson was a man of unquestionable honesty and integri
2 CONC ty, thoroughly reliable and dependable in every way. In all his dealings he sought to exempli
2 CONC fy the Golden Rule and to treat others as he would like to be treated. As a kind husband an
2 CONC d a faithful friend he will be greatly missed by his family and by the wide circle of friends
2 CONC , who during the thirty years of his residence in the Baxter community have come to accord hi
