Former Resident Charles Hayes is Laid to Rest
Funeral services were held last Thursday at the Bethel Church for the late Charles Hayes, who passed away at Des Moines, 4 Nov. at the age of more than 92 years. The services were conducted by Rev. H.J. Wilkins, pastor of the Congregational Church of Baxter, the music being furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. H.J. Walkins, Mrs. Winifred Curyea, and Guy and Harold Hardenburgh. Burial was in Bethel cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away a number of years ago.
Charles Hayes was born in Indiana on 2 Aug 1828, and came to Iowa while still a very young man. He had watched the growth and development of the state from a wild, uncivilized country, with its few and widely scattered settlements down to the present time. He made his home in Baxter for many years, following the trade of carpet weaver and acting as janitor of the school house. He was a gentle and kindly man and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. It was by the school children, however, that he was best beloved; he was their friend and advisor and it was to him they went with their troubles. Many a student of a generation ago owes much to his advice and his sympathy.
Mr. Hayes removed from Baxter over fifteen years ago and since that time has made his home with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by one son, Harrison Hays of Newton and one daughter, Mrs. W.M. Clements of Colfax, besides a number of grandchildren, and great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. ~ Baxter, Iowa, Thursday, 18 Nov. 1920.
Married first to unknown Ashley.
