193. Robert Anthony

Robert Lee Anthony, 36, of 316 West 3rd St. South, a lifelong resident of Newton, died Saturday at the Veterans Administration Research hospital in Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Toland Funeral home. The Rev. Philip Biblehimer, pastor of the First Lutheran church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sugar grove Cemetery. The Amvets post will conduct graveside services.

Mr. Anthony is survived by his wife; a son, Robert Lee Jr.15; and 2 daughters, Kimberly Kay, 1 and Sheryl Jane 10; two step-sons, Rickey, 9, and Charles, 8; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Lewis Anthony of Newton; five brothers, Arnold of Newton, Ersel of Las Vegas, Nev., Clinton of Rolling Hills, Calif.; Elmer of Gardenia, Calif.; and Charles of Gardenia, Calif.; and two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Gail) Mindham of Newton and Mrs. Ed (Marvel) Shannon of Wichita, Kan.

Mr. Anthony was a member of First Lutheran church. He was also a member of the Amvets and former member of the Izaak Walton league.

The son of Lewis E. and Neva Gibson Anthony, he was born May 10, 1924 in Newton. He was married December 6, 1958 to Margaret Mae Shepard in Newton.

Mr. Anthony was an auto mechanic. Mr. Anthony was preceded in death by three sisters. - Newton Daily News January 9, 1961


242. Sheryl Anthony

Sheryl Anthony Dies Thursday; Services Pending

Sheryl Jane Anthony, 18, Newton, died Thursday at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Johnson Funeral Home will handle arrangements which have not been completed.

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Doris Booth, Denver, Colo.; a brother, Robert Anthony in the Air Force stationed in Omaha, Neb.; two grandfathers, Lewis Anthony, Newton and Fred Engle, Marshalltown, a grandmother, Mrs. Fred Matheny, Newton, and a great-grandfather, Fred Engle, Newton.

Also surviving are two half-sisters, Kimberly Anthony, Newton, and Kathleen Booth, Denver, and a half-brother, Clinton Booth, Denver.

The daughter of Robert and Doris Engle Anthony, she was born Dec 9, 1950 in Marshalltown. - Newton Daily News June 10, 1969.


199. Neva Belle Gibson

Double Services Set Friday for Crash Victims

Double funeral services for the young Newton mother and her baby daughter who were killed Tuesday night in an auto-truck crash will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock at Johnson-Murdoch Funeral Home.

Mrs. Walter G. Gorman, 18, and daughter, Diana Lynn, eight months, died when their car, driven by Mr. Gorman, crashed into the rear of a semi-trailer on Highway 6 just outside the west city limits.

Officiating at the services will be Rev. Benson B. Compton, pastor of the Assembly of God church. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery.

Pallbears for the mother will be Carl Clement, Leland Clement, Phil Lane, Floyd Mulbrook, Mark Emmack and Robert Steinberger, anf for the baby, Joan Compton, Sharon Borts, Carolyn Smith and Karn Sue Pennock.

Music will be by Mrs. Marie Hardenbrook, soloist and Miss Inez McNeese, organist. Mrs. Theodore Matheny and Mrs. Beverly Allfree will be in charge of flowers. ~Newton Daily News, September 13, 1951.

Double Services Set Friday for Crash Victims

Roland Lee Jacobs

Roland L. Jacobs

Roland L. Jacobs, 63, of 716 E 8th St. S., died of cancer , Sunday, Jan. 18, at his home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Frederick Kramer, chaplain at Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Tuesday. Visitation with the family will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials in Mr. Jacob's name will be accepted.

The son of Joseph Donald and Grace Mae Bevard Jacobs, he was born April 7, 1934, in Cedarvale, Kan. He married Ruby Virginia Gibson, May 30, 1953, in Newton.

A resident of Newton since 1943, he previously was a resident of Oskaloosa for nine years.

Mr. Jacobs was a retired employee of the Maytag Company in the automatic assembly department. He was a member of the UAW Local 997 retiree union.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Deb of Newton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Tom McConeghey of Waterloo and Lorrie and Rudy Harter of Newton; seven grandchildren; a step-grandchild; a great-grandchild; a step-great-grandchild; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Bob Moredock of Newton, Naomi and Walt Gorman of Colfax and Wanda and Paul Lane of Altoona; and a brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Margaret Jacobs of Newton.

He was preceded in death by hisparents; a son in infancy; two brothers; and four siblings in infancy. ~ Newton Daily News, January 19, 1998.


247. Tony Rae Jacobs

Rites Conducted for Jacobs Child

Graveside rites for Tony Ray Jacobs, infant son of Roland and Ruby Gibson Jacobs of Rt. 2, Newton, were held today at Sugar Grove Cemetery.

The Rev. Harold Den Hartog, minister of the Metz Community Church, conducted the services.

Survivors are his parents; two sisters, Jennifer and Lorraine, at home; a brother, Randall, at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Jacobs of Newton and Mrs. Hazel Gibson of Newton.

Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The child died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. ~ The Newton Daily News November 18, 1968.

Obituary: Carol A. Rasmussen

Grinnell - Carol Ann Rasmussen, 25, of 202 16th Ave., Grinnell, a former resident of Newton, died Saturday, February 16, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesay, Feb 19 at the Reese Chapel in Newton.The Rev. Harold Den Hartog, pastor of the Metz Community Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. today, Feb 18. Memorial contributions to a fund in Miss Rasmussen's name will be accepted fro Brandon Dale, One Special Child to Another.

Survivors are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Rasmussen of Grinnel; two sisters, Mrs. George (Linda) Riggs of Newton and Mrs. Robert (Kathy) Benson of Delta; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Clement of Rt. 2 Newton, her paternal grandfather, Vernon Rasmussen of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother. The daughter of Edgar and caroline Clement Rasmussen, she was born Aug 23, 1959 in Newton. Miss Rasmussen had lived in Newton until her family moved to Montezuma in 1977. They moved to Grinnel in 1984.
