General Notes: Search for missing hunter ends
By Senée Seale

The search for missing hunter Walter Benskin of Santa Fe has been officially called off.

"We know that he's passed away," said his daughter Krystal Newell of Pearland. "We're very realistic people. We know he couldn't have made it through that storm."

Benskin was last seen Oct. 25 at Ripple Creek Pass, Colo., the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office said.

Rio Blanco County is in a remote, rugged part of Northwest Colorado bordering Utah.

Benskin was hunting with his son-in-law when they separated and the son-in-law, whose name was not released, went back to their camp for a jacket, the sheriff's department said.

Benskin did not return to the camp that evening.

That afternoon, a storm dropped about 2 feet of snow in the area.

Search-and-rescue crews from around the region began looking for Benskin on Oct. 26. After finding no clues and because of dangerous conditions, authorities scaled back the search on Oct. 28.

On Tuesday, Dickinson-based Texas EquuSearch joined the hunt conducting aerial and ground searches after local officials had called off the operation earlier that day.

Seven of Benskin's family members helped with the operation. They returned from Colorado on Friday and Saturday.

Newell said they plan to resume the search in April or May once the snow melts.

"We just hope we can find him soon and bring him home, so we can have closure," she said.

In the meantime, the family is accepting donations of money or frequent flyer miles to send volunteers to Colorado next spring.

Donations can be made at any Amergy Bank in the name of Walter and Cheryl Benskin. ~ The Daily News, Galveston County Daily, Published November 5, 2006

Family renews search for hunter's remains
By Vimal Patel

A search for the remains of a man missing since October will be called off tonight, but family members said they won't go back to Texas until his remains are found.

About 50 rescuers cut through rugged wilderness Saturday near Ripple Creek Pass, about 45 miles east of Meeker, where Walter Benskin, 53, was last seen hunting. More than 20 family members from Santa Fe, Texas, are also in Colorado to search.

"They will do anything humanly possible to locate him," said James Benskin, the missing man's uncle, from his home in Pleasanton, Texas.

Walter Benskin was hunting elk alone on Oct. 26, 2006, when it started lightly snowing about 9 a.m. His son-in-law, Daniel Brandon, was on the trip with him, but headed back to camp, authorities said.

About 3 p.m., a "blinding snowstorm" dumped about 2 feet of snow in about 18 hours, said Sgt. Anthony Mazzola of the Rio Blanco Sheriff's Department. Rescuers searched for more than a week for Walter Benskin with snowmobiles, helicopters and horse teams.

The hunt for Benskin's remains began again Wednesday after snow had melted in the high-country area and conditions were safe, but family members have been searching for more than two weeks now, Mazzola said.

The investigator warned of the blistering winter conditions in the 11,000-feet-elevation area.

"You need to be prepared, have the proper clothing, proper equipment and knowledge of weather conditions," he said.

James Benskin said his nephew was adventurous and loved the outdoors. There was the time he got bored working at a Wyoming oil rig and hitchhiked home to Texas - picking, eating and selling tomatoes along the way.

On Saturday, Walter Benskin's wife, children, siblings and even his almost 80-year-old father were in Colorado to help with the search, the uncle said.

James Benskin said he hopes his nephew's tightknit family finds closure.

"But if they don't, he was up there doing what he loved to do," he said. "We all got to go sometime. There was danger in it, but you don't quit living because things are a little dangerous." ~ Denver Post Staff Writer, Article Last Updated: 07/01/2007 01:08:59 AM MDT

Family hopes to find body of lost hunter
by Tillie Fong,

Family and friends of a Texas man who disappeared in Rio Blanco County while hunting elk last fall have spent much of last month searching for his remains.
"He loved life and he made everyone love life," said one of his twin daughters, Kelly Brandon, 26, of Santa Fe, Texas, near Galveston. "We miss him. We want to bring him back home."

On Oct. 26, Walter Benskin, 53, and his son-in-law, Daniel Brandon, 27, both of Santa Fe, were hunting near Ripple Creek Pass, about 125 miles west of Denver and 30 miles southwest of Steamboat Springs.

The two separated, with Brandon heading back to camp to get a jacket. A storm blew in, dumping two feet of snow in the area, and Benskin never returned to camp. Searchers spent nearly a week last October looking for him, using dogs and a National Guard helicopter, as well as crews from Rio Blanco, Mesa and Garfield counties.

On June 27, authorities launched another effort to find Benskin's body. Eight dog teams from Search and Rescue Dogs of Colorado, a private helicopter and 50 searchers combed four square miles near where Benskin was last seen.

Sgt. Anthony Mazzola, spokesman for the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office, said the search was called off Saturday.

"There was lack of clues," he said.

Mazzola said the terrain is rugged and steep, which made the search difficult. "If he sought shelter and got himself under some logs to protect himself, it would be difficult to find," he said. "He has to be underneath something for us not to see him."

Mazzola said people will be in the area tending sheep and cattle that graze there. Archery hunting season starts in August, so there is a chance that someone may find Benskin's body.

"There's also been people in other counties that have come up missing during hunting season that were found later," he said.

However, many of Benskin's relatives and friends have not given up. Some started the search June 8, and have enlisted the help of Texas EquuSearch, a horse-mounted search- and-rescue group. "We've had more than 20 people come and go, with lots of different people up here at different times," said Kelly Brandon, who joined the search last Thursday.

A group of family and friends plans to continue until Sunday, with more people expected to join the effort before then.

"We're going up the mountain with hope, and come down tired and beat up, and you feel you have accomplished nothing at the end of the day. It's an emotional roller coaster," said Kelly Brandon, who has been staying at a camp near the top of a mountain.

She said the family hasn't decided what to do after Sunday if they don't find Benskin but won't have any qualms leaving him in Colorado."If he is not found, we would be content with him being here in the forest. It's beautiful country. He loved it here." ~ Rocky Mountain News, Thursday, July 5, 2007

Family vows to find missing Santa Fe hunter
By Chris Paschenko / The Daily News

SANTA FE - Despite an accident, a weeks-long search was continuing Thursday for a missing man whose family believes he died last year while hunting in mountains in a remote corner of Colorado.

Walter "Bubba" Benskin III disappeared in October, while elk hunting with one of his sons-in-law at Ripple Creek Pass, Northwest Colo.

A snowstorm surprised Benskin and Galveston resident Daniel Brandon at an 11,000-foot elevation about 45 miles east of Meeker.

Brandon survived, but lost touch with his father-in-law. Despite an intensive search in the next few days, Benskin could not be found.

Benskin's sister, Cathy O'Briant of Cypress, said she broke her arm during the new search and had to go to a medical facility for medication but was returning to look for her brother.

"You can't imagine someone being lost until you experience it," she said via cell phone. "To know he was a skilled person, something desperately wrong had to happen."

O'Briant's husband, Tim, said he had spoken to his wife Tuesday via cell phone. She has been searching with about 20 family members and friends for more than two weeks, he said.

The family hopes to find Benskin's remains, which could have been revealed by the retreating snow.

"All the snow has melted in the meadows," O'Briant said.

"Texas Equusearch was on the scene (last) Wednesday and they were going to search for about four days with dog teams, helicopters and drones taking pictures."

O'Briant said the Rio Blanco County sheriff's office and Equusearch called off their search Saturday, but the family remained.

"My wife seemed to be in good spirits," he said. "Better than I expected. When they called off the search Saturday, it was a very emotional time. Sunday was a day of reflection. Most of the (family) that had been there the longest had come to peace with the situation."

Paula Knofla, a Cypress friend of Cathy O'Briant, said Benskin's parents, Walter Jr. and Martha, of Kennard, are in their 70s and have assisted in the search.

"They've made camp on the mountain where he was last seen," Knofla said.

"It is horribly taxing, both emotionally and physically, as most of them aren't in the physical condition to withstand the altitude and the rugged, muddy conditions."

Knofla said Benskin's wife Cheryl couldn't collect on her husband's life-insurance policy or liquidate his assets without a death certificate.

"No death certificate will be issued without a body," she said.

"And she has to continue to pay life-insurance premiums for seven years before obtaining the death certificate. It's a major financial hardship for her, as he was the primary breadwinner."

O'Briant said his wife could return to Texas as early as this weekend with her parents.

"I was told some of the people were prepared to remain there until the middle of next week if something doesn't end sooner," he said. "I think her parents are pretty much ready to come home."

O'Briant said the Benskins' twin daughters, Kelly Brandon and Pearland resident Krystal Newell, are also involved in the search.

He said Kelly's husband, "Danny, was the man hunting with Walter at the time he was lost. Danny made it back to camp, but Bubba never came back. Danny helped start the search."

Cindy Wisdom, a case manager with Texas Equusearch, which helped in the first search last year, said the new hunt was called off by law-enforcement officers after finding no sign of Benskin for four or five days.

"There were no existing signs of him anywhere," Wisdom said.

"The family has been up there four weeks and law enforcement started searching on June 28. We had five on our team as support staff, taking care of volunteers and searchers." ~ The Galveston County Daily News <http://www.galvnews.com>. Friday, July 6, 2007

Remains discovered in wilderness area
Associated Press

The remains of a Texas hunter missing since October have been found in a western Colorado wilderness area.

The hunter, Walter Benskin, 53, of Santa Fe, Texas, disappeared in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area on Oct. 26.

Rio Blanco County Search and Rescue found his remains on Saturday, sheriff's dispatcher Katie Hale said. The remains were found about a quarter-mile from a spot where a friend, two days earlier, had discovered some of Benskin's personal belongings. There were indications he had tried to light a fire.

Authorities said Benskin had been hunting elk with a relative when they separated, planning to meet later. Benskin never returned to their camp, and about 2 feet of snow fell in the area that day.

Search crews, friends and family hunted for Benskin for several days last fall and again this spring and summer. ~ The Rocky Mountain News, Wednesday, July 18, 2007
