General Notes: Obituary of Mary A. (Stribley) Benskin

Mary A. Benskin was born March 12, 1826 in Watervelit, New York, and died Dec. 26, 1905 in the home of her daughter, Mary B. Philpott, McClure, Ohio. In early life her home was in eastern Ohio; in 1860 she moved with her family to Napoleon, O., and in 1968 moved to Texas, O., where she lived until about three years ago. When quite young she was married to Frederick J. Benskin and for more than sixty years they lived together in happy and devoted wedlock until his death, March 21, 1904.

From childhood she was inclined to the Christ-like life and early became a servant of the Master; like Him her desire was "not to be ministered unto, but to minister." She lived more for others than for herself. Hence her life was a life of constant toil. Many of the members of the Central Ohio Conference will remember the cheery home, where they were always welcome, and where they received inspiration for their work, comfort and help in their trials and devoted service for all their seeds. There was no sacrifice -- that was within her power that, was too great for her to make for the church and the cause of Christ. It is not strange that she gave two of her daughters to the ministry of the church.

In her home life her devotion to her husband was constant, tender and untiring and her love for her children was a burning zeal. She was not only mother in the holiest sense of the word but also a companion and friend to her children and drew from their hearts perfect confidence and undying love. To her neighbors and friends her life was a fountain of blessing. Many who are here and many who are gone know how rich her life was in good deeds. She followed Christ's love in her constant service of love and kindness to all she came in contact with.

She was the mother of seven children of whom three are living; F. C. Benskin, of LaFayette, Col., Mrs. Rev. J. W. Miller, of Bradner, O. and Mrs. Rev. W. S. Philpott, of McClure, O.

Her last three days were full of suffering but also full of peace and confiding trust in the Father's love. A blessed life has ceased its work on earth, a choice spirit has been taken from our midst and given a place among the angels of God in Heaven. Funeral services were held in Texas, Ohio, Tuesday afternoon, Dec 28th, 1905 by the pastor, the Rev. W. W. Constein, assisted by the Rev. W. Shank of Liberty Center.~ The Northwest News, Napoleon, Ohio, January 4, 1906
