General Notes: A winter storm that plodded across the state was a factor in the deaths of at least five people on snowy Iowa roads, four from the same family.
Roads were slick Monday morning when a minivan collided with a beverage truck east of Des Moines, pinning a 5-year-old girl in the back seat of her mother's vehicle.

The girl, Rylee Balducki, died at the scene. The driver, Darcie Balducki of 11946 Vandalia Drive in Runnells, was thrown 30 feet from the minivan. She was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, where she was listed in fair condition. Her 8-year-old daughter Kailey was in good condition at Blank Children's Hospital.

Ron Balducki, Rylee's father, was not in the van at the time of the collision but happened upon the scene a few minutes later, officials said.
Polk County sheriff's deputies said the snowy weather was partly to blame for the crash.

Darcie Balducki and the two children were traveling north on 112th Street and stopped at Iowa Highway 163. When Balducki pulled onto Iowa 163, her minivan collided with an eastbound beverage truck driven by Timothy Buckner, 36, of Des Moines. The truck hit the driver's side of the van, and Rylee was sitting behind her mother.

Polk County Sheriff's Capt. Doug Phillips said the truck driver was not injured in the crash but was shaken by it. The truck reportedly had its lights on at the time. ~ Des Moines Register, January 27, 2004, page 1
