Platt Vincent

Platt Vincent, an old and revered citizen of Jasper county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dallas Hanke, about ten o'clock last night. He had only been critically ill about 24 hours, although his health had failed him about six years ago. Death came as a result of poor health and a weakened condition due to over-exertion in the heat.

Mr. Vincent had been down to Metz to visit some relatives and exerted himself too much in making the trip.

Mr. Vincent was a old time school teacher, having taught school in Jasper county for a long time. Later he taught in Avoca, Iowa, for twenty years. He was one of the ablest and best teachers of this time and many a prominent businessman in this vicinity attributes his success to the thorough training, which he received under Mr. Vincent.

Platt Vincent was born in Verbank, Duchess County, New York, April 23, 1841. He was 73 years old at the time of his death. He was one of a family of nine children, two of whom, Phoebe Velie, and Ida R. Phillips, are still living in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He was an army volunteer, having joined in 1861 and was given honorable discharge in 1865. He belonged to Co. C., of the 91st regiment, N.Y. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Avoca, Iowa, and a charter member of the Owls here.

Shortly after the close of the Civil war he came to Jasper county, where he was married to Miss Alla R. Hitchler in August 1871. Two children were born to this union. Alpha, who died in infancy and Mary, wife of Dallas Hanke, of this city.

After the death of his wife on March 12, 1875, he made his home with Mr. And Mrs. Wm. Hitchler until his daughter was married in 1891. For the last 23 years he has made his home with Mrs. Dallas Hanke.

No definite plans have been made for the funeral but short services will be held at the home of D.H. Hanke at 2 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon. ~ Newton papers July 13, 1914.
