Born: December 14, 1919 in Lucas Co., Iowa John D. SmithJohn David Smith, 75, of Newton died of kidney failure Thursday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, with burial at Sugar Grove Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born in Lucas County and had lived in Newton since 1953. He was a retired machinist at Maytag, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Newton Blue Jay CB Club and Red Haw Campers Club. Survivors include his wife, Maxine; four sons, Brian of Newton, Danny of Hartford, Kenneth of Adel and William of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Brenda C. Breckenridge of Newton and Connie Morrison of Grinnell; three sisters, Ruby Anderson and Neva Brown, both of Chariton, and Leona Etter of Talmoon, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from noon until the service begins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, a great grand son, seven brothers and five sisters. Mr. Smith, who served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, was a past member of the United Auto Workers, Local 997, and was a member of the Newton Blue Jay CB Club and the Red Haw Camper Club. He had farmed for several years in Lucas County and later was employed at the Maytag Co., retiring in December 1981 after 29 years of service. Zelma Maxine Smith
Born: November 17, 1922 in Mediapolis, Des Moines Co., Iowa Obituary of Zelma Smith Zelma went home to be with her Savior on Tuesday afternoon, August 29, 2017, at Accura Health Care of Newton East, under the care of Hospice. A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation will be an hour prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, and as an expression of sympathy, memorials may be designated to Metz Community Church, Mercy Hospice or to Maxine's family, in her name. Zelma Maxine Smith, 94, was born November 17, 1922, near Mediapolis, Iowa, the daughter of Charles William and Mary Etta (Bandy) Piper. She was a graduate of the Mediapolis High School, Class of 1940. On August 5, 1943, Maxine was united in marriage to John David Smith in Burlington, moving to the Newton area in 1953. She was employed by the Vernon Company, retiring as a Silkscreen operator in 1984, after 26 years of service. Maxine devoted her life to and enjoyed her family; and was a member of the Metz Community Church and U.A.W. Retires Union #997. Maxine is survived by her daughters: Connie (Daryl) Morrison of Grinnell, Brenda (Jeff) Vaverka of Grinnell; her sons: Kenneth (Carol) Smith of Mission, Texas and Brian (Sue) Smith of Oskaloosa; her daughters-in-law: Belinda Jean Beller of Denver, Colorado and Rhonda Smith of Chino Valley, Arizona; her thirteen grandchildren, twenty six great-grandchildren and sixteen great-great grandchildren; her brother Walter Piper of Mediapolis; numerous nieces and nephews; and many good neighbors and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband John; her sons: William Smith and Danny Smith; a grandson Jeremy; a great-grandson Damon; her sister Wanda; and brothers: Glenn Piper and Harlan Piper, both in infancy and Lloyd Piper. ~ Pence Reece Funeral Home |
William "Bill" D. Smith
Born: February 2, 1945 in Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa William "Bill" SmithWilliam David "Bill" Smith, the son of John David and Zelma Maxine Piper Smith, was born February 2, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa. A resident of the Newton, Iowa area since 1953, he was a graduate of the Newton Senior High School, Class of 1964. On May 3, 1964, Bill was united in marriage with Belinda Jean Hitchler in the Whittenberg Church rural Newton. Jean and Bill moved to Colorado in 1969, where he attended the University of Northern Colorado. Bill enjoyed his family, friends and his home in Colorado, as well as camping, fishing and hunting. Death came to Bill at the age of 58, on Sunday morning, January 4, 2004 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was preceded in death by his father, John D. Smith on February 9, 1995. Those left to honor the memory of Bill include his wife, Belinda Jean of Lakewood, Colorado; his daughters & son-in-law: Michelle Foote of Aurora, Colorado and Marisa & Chad Hingst of Wakefield, Nebraska; his five grandchildren: Philip Conti, Geoffrey Foote, Tisean Schulz, Ashlee Hingst & Bently Hingst; his mother, Maxine Smith of Newton; his sisters: Connie Morrison of Grinnell, Iowa and Brenda C.
