Born: December 14, 18971 at Tracy City, Grundy Co., Tennessee Francis Shrum Dies Saturday; Rites WednesdayFrancis DeWitt Shrum, 66, of Rt. 4, Newton, a resident of the Newton vicinity for 40 years, died Saturday at the County Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Toland Funeral Home. The Rev. LaVerne Sova will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery. The casket will be opened before the service and closed during and after the services. Mr. Shrum will lie in state at the Toland Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today. He is survived by four sons, Robert of Rt. 2, Newton, John of Newton and Herbert Shrum of Burbank, Calif.; five daughters, Mrs. George (Mary) Hitchler of Newton, Mrs. Gene (Maye) Auten of Kellogg, Mrs. Richard (Dean) Ehler of Rt. 4, Newton, Mrs. Jack (Ruby) Jontz of Kellogg and Mrs. Paul (Florence) Liera of Paramount, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Lillard O. Shrum of Chepota, Kan., and two sisters, Mrs. J.J. Findley of Newton and Mrs. J. A. Meriweather of Chetopa, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances in 1955; three brothers, Henry, Joe and Martin and a sister, Lula K. Charles,; a son in infancy and two grandsons. The son of William Calvin and Sara Belle Brown Shrum, he was born Dec. 14, 1897 at Tracy City, Tenn. He attended Tracy City Schools. Mr. Shrum was married to Frances Elizabeth Harvey April 26, 1921 at Oswego, Kan. He was a retired farmer. ~ Newton Daily News - August 3, 1964 |

Born: July 17, 1905 in Oswego, Labette Co., Kansas Mrs. Shrum, 49, Dies Saturday in Iowa City HospitalMrs. Frances Elizabeth Shrum, 49, of RFD 2, Newton, died Saturday at the University hospital in Iowa City of pneumonia. Rosary for Mrs. Shrum will be today at 7:45 p.m. in the Toland funeral home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Toland's conducted by Father T.J. McCann of the Sacred Heart Catholic church. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery. Mrs. Shrum is survived by her husband: five daughters, Miss Sylvia Dean Shrum, Mrs. Ruby Jontz, and Miss Florence Ruth Shrum, all of Newton, Mrs. Mary Hitchler, Mendon, Mo., and Mrs. Maye Auten, of Kellogg. Other survivors are four sons, Robert, William and John of Newton, and Herbert with the Navy in San Diego; and five grandchildren. She was born in Oswego, Kan., July 17,1905.
