William L. Scott
Born: August 4, 1861 in Jasper Co., Iowa William L. ScottWord has been received here of the death, Jan. 2, of William Lincoln Scott, 78, of Roseburg, Ore., a former resident of Jasper county. Funeral services for Mr. Scott were conducted at Roseburg, Ore., on Jan. 4, 1940, by Dr. M. H. Roach, interment was in the Wilbur cemetery. Born Aug 4, 1861, in Jasper county, he was the son of James and Mary Logan Scott, who were both born in Pittsburgh, Pa., settling in Sherman township. Both are buried in Metz cemetery. He went to Wallace county, Kan., in 1887 where he homesteaded on government land. After the death of his first wife in 1910, he was married to Anna M. Hill of Newton, Ia., in 1916. From 1907 to 1915, he served as register of deeds of Wallace county, Kan., resigning to serve as postmaster of Sharon Springs, Kan., for two years. In 1924, he and Mrs. Scott moved to Roseburg, Ore., where they have since resided. Surviving relatives are his widow, and a sister, Mrs. Anna J. Bradway, a former Jasper county teacher, both of Roseburg, Ore. Among the nieces and nephews now living in Iowa are Scott Hodgins of Newton, Clarence, Tom and Albert Holmes of Kellogg, Harry Holmes of Grinnell and Mrs. Porter Winters of Brooklyn, Ia. ~ Jasper County Recorder, January 11, 1940, page 9, column 4. 1. 1900 Census, Sharon Springs Township, Wallace Co., Kansas, On-line Images, Image 10. Cora's mother's name was Belle Cross. She was born Feb. 26, 1872 in Illinois. She died December 13, 1910 in Sharon Springs, Kansas and is buried in the Sharon Springs Cemetery. William Scott HodginsWilliam Hodgins, Former Newton Resident, DiesFuneral services for William S. Hodgins, 89, of 4325 N.E. 29th, Des Moines, a former longtime resident of Newton, and a Jasper County highway department employee for 29 years, were held today at the Frist United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gregory Caldwell, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church conducted the services. Burial was in the Newton Union Cemetery. Survivors are his wife, Gertrude; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Lester, during World War II and a brother and sister. Mr. Hodgins was a member of the Christian Church and the Woodman of the World. The son of William and Katie Hodgins, he was born May 1, 1885 at Kellogg. He was married to Gertrude Keil Nov. 12, 1930 in Grinnell. Twenty-ninth St. in Des Moines, who died of hart failure Friday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wallace Funeral Home here. Burial will be at Union Cemetery here. Mrs. Hodgins was a long-time resident of Newton and moved to Des Moines in 1973. Mrs. Grace HodginsServices for Mrs. Grace Hodgins, 87, of 814 Twenty-fifth St. will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, with burial in Glendale Cemetery. Mrs. Hodgins died Monday of complications following a broken hip at Des Moines General Hospital. Mrs. Hodgins was born in Galesburg and lived in Des Moines for 50 years.
