Zelpha Faye McWhirter, 100, of Newton, died of heart failure, Sunday, April 23, at Heritage Care Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. EvaLyn Carlson, pastor of the Newton First Christian Church and the Rev. Gene Wittie of Waterville, Minn., officiating. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where family will be present. Memorials in Mrs. McWhirter's name to the First Christian Church will be accepted.

The daughter of William F. and Millie E. Ulrich Russell, she was born June 28, 1899, in Colfax. She attended Colfax High School. She married Robert D. McWhirter Nov. 14, 1916, in Newton.

A longtime resident of Colfax and Newton, Mrs. McWhirter moved to Waterville, Minn. in 1957 before returning to Newton in 1994. She owned and operated a resort in Minnesota and was a member of the First Baptist Church and Senior Citizens, both in Waterville, Minn.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Helen Rexroat of Pella, Clarice and Dave Trotter of Newton and Alice and Ron Trotter of Atkin, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Lillian McWhirter of Baxter; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great-grandchildren; a foster sister, Myrtle Welch of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, a son, a granddaughter, three brothers, a sister and two grandsons. ~ The Newton Daily News, April 24, 2000

R. McWhirter dies Monday;
rites Thursday

Robert McWhirter, 83, of Waterville, Minn., a Jasper County area farmer until moving to Waterville 23 years ago died Monday at his home in Waterville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace Funeral Home in Newton.

The Rev. Randy Sanders, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Waterville, Minn., will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Funeral Home in Newton.

Survivors are his wife, Zelpha; four daughters, Mrs. Harold (Ruth) Nass of California; Mrs. Enoch (Helen) Rexroat and Mrs. Dave (Clarice) Trotter, both of Newton; and Mrs. Ronald (Alice) Trotter of Akin, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Lillian ) McWhirter of Baxter; 19 grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Jr.; two grandchildren; a brother; and six sisters.

Mr. McWhirter had operated a resort in Waterville for 23 years.

The son of John and Rebecca Wilson McWhirter, he was born July 8, 1897 in Metz.

SAN GABRIEL, Calif. - Ruth McWhirter (Mrs. Harold) Noss of San Gabriel, Calif., a former resident of Newton, died Wednesday, March 3, in San Gabriel.

San Gabriel, Calif ­ Gravesite rites for Ruth Elizabeth McWhirter Nass, 75, of San Gabriel, Calif., a former resident of Newton, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at the Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.

The Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the Newton Congregational United Church of Christ, will conduct services.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6i to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

Memorials to Alzheimer’s Research or Progress Industries will be accepted.

Survivors are a son, Don Nass of Santa Ana, Calif.; two daughters, Nancy Pritkin of El Monte, Calif., and Jayne Pabst of Santa Ana, Calif.; and her mother, Zelpha (Mrs. Robert) McWhirter of Waterville, Minn.

Also surviving are three sisters, Helen (Mrs. Enoch Rexroat and Clarice (Mrs. Dave) Trotter; and Alice (Mrs. Ronald) Trotter of Brainerd, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her father, Robert D. McWhirter, and a brother, Robert W. McWhirter.

Mrs. Nass was a 1934 graduate of Newton Community High School and 1938 graduate of St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Rock Island, Ill.
