Obituary of Lincoln Marshall

Funeral services for Lincoln (Linc) Marshall, 72- year old pioneer Jasper county farmer, were held Thursday afternoon from the Murdoch Funeral home. Marshall died Tuesday afternoon after an auto accident, a mile west of Newton.

Rev. Ross Mills was in charge of the services. Music was furnished by Earnest L. Earley, singing "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Home of the Soul," accompanied on the piano by Miss Florence Cooper. Mrs. Harold McLain and Mrs. Thomas Kirkwood were in charge of flowers, and pallbearers, all nephews of the deceased, were Allan Moore, Harold Marshall, Glen Bruce, Charles Hickman, Glenn Hickman and Vernon Brock.

Interment was in Newton Union cemetery.

Lincoln Marshall, son of Emery and Mary Bone Marshall, was born near Cincinnati, O., March 11, ="186"4. When 12 years of age he moved to Newton, Ia. with his parents and lived on a farm west of Newton. He was united in marriage to Louisa Henning March 4, 1891, moving to town where they lived for six years, and later purchasing a farm west of Newton, where they have since lived.

To this union were born three children: Leona May, who died at the age of 9 days; Mrs. Carrie McAllister; and William Marshall.

Mr. Marshall met death accidentally on August 25, 1936, being at the time of his death, 72 years, 5 months, and 11 days of age.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Allan McAllister, and son William Marshall; five grand children, Allan McAllister Jr., and Betty DeLores, Marilyn and Gerald Marshall; two brothers, Sheldon and Charles Marshall, and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hickman, Mrs. Tilsie Helphrey and Mrs. Lura Brock. ~ Jasper County Record, September 3, 1936.

Obituary of S. S. Marshall

Stores closed here Wednesday afternoon for one hour while Newton townspeople and relatives and friends gathered at the First Congregational church for final rites for S. S. Marshall, 68, well-known Newton hardware merchant. Rev. Frank M. Blish, pastor, was assisted in the services by Rev. Ross Mills of Green Mountain, Ia.

Tribute was paid to Mr. Marshall by the assembled groups of the B. P. O. of Elks lodge, Chamber of Commerce and employees of the Newton National bank of which he was a director.

Pallbearers

Pallbearers were Reese Bond, John Buchanan, Dr. O. N. Green, F. L. Drake, C. A. Peck and James Walton. Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery.

Ralph Miller, accompanied by Mrs. Vera Scheel, sang, "Crossing the Bar" and "I've Done My Work". Floral arrangements were made by Mrs. Ann Manning, Mrs. Chris Skow, Veva Childs and Mrs. Harry Morris.

S. S. Marshall, son of Emery and Mary Marshall, was born Dec. 29, 1870 in New Lexington, Ohio, and died at the Skiff Memorial hospital at Newton, Ia., on November 12, 1939.

To Jasper County

At the age of about 8 years, he came with his parents to Jasper county and located on a farm 2 1/2 miles southwest of Newton. He had remained in residence here receiving his education in the rural schools and graduating from Hazel Dell academy. He also attended Newton Normal college and later the Highland Park college in Des Moines.

After completing his education, he located in Newton with the Parmenter drug store as a pharmacist, but later changed his profession and became a hardware merchant.

In 1906, he entered into partnership with E. L. Earley on the north side of the square and had continued his business in the same building since that time. He was in partnership two years with Mr. Earley and also two years with Lowrie E. Johnson. In later years, his son, Harold, assisted in the management of the store.

He was united in marriage to Floy B. Frary on June 14, 1899, at the home of the bride's parents in Newton.

Besides his wife, other surviving relatives are his son, Harold of Newton, a daughter, Mrs. E. A. Betts of State College, Pa., and three grandchildren, Beverly Jean, Shirley Lee and Margaret J. Betts.

A brother, Charles of Newton, and two sisters, Mrs. Valura Brock of Prairie City and Mrs. Sarah Hickman of Newton, are the only surviving members of the family of 12 children.

Those coming from out of town to attend the funeral services and who called at the home were: Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Butler of Prairie City; Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Kellogg of Colfax; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Telfer, Mrs. Anna Ed. Edwards of Indianola; Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Betts of Grimes; Sid G. Sherman of Maxwell and F. W. Dixon, R. J. Stewart, W. E. Muir, S. P. McTigue and D. E. Harris all of Des Moines. Officials of the Brown-Camp Hardware company in Des Moines were also in attendance at the service. ~ Jasper County Record, November 23, 1939, page 8, column 4.
