Verl D. Johnson, Former Resident, Dies in Colorado
Verl D. Johnson, 61, of 2635 Mapleton No. 34, Boulder,
Colo., a former resident of Newton, died at 2:10 a.m. today
at the American Medical Center Hospital at Denver, Colo.
Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements which
have not been completed.
Survivors are his wife, Florence; a son, Jesse Richard of
Boulder, Colo.; two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Cecelia)
Ringgenberg of Newton and Mrs. Clarence (Helen) Davidson of
Newton; 10 grandchildren and a brother Claire Johnson of
Newton.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Lutheran Church in
Boulder.
A maintenance man at the University of Colorado at
Boulder, Mr. Johnson came to Newton from Lucas County in
1919 and moved to Boulder in 1953.
The son of Jesse and Lydia Martin Johnson, he was born
Aug. 8, 1905 in Lucas County near Chariton.
He was married to Florence Rabeneau Dec. 24, 1928 in

Verl Johnson Rites Set for Saturday
Funeral services for Verl D. Johnson, 61, of Boulder,
Colo., a former Newton resident, will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday at the Metz Community Church.
The Rev. Robert B. Willhoite, minister of the First
Baptist Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in
Sugar Grove Cemetery.
The casket will not be open. Memorial contributions to
the American Medial Center Hospital at Spivak, Colo., will
be accepted.
Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial service was held today at Boulder, Colo.
Mr. Johnson, who resided in Newton from 1919 to 1953,
died Wednesday at the American Medical Center Hospital. ~

Florence Ferguson
Florence Ferguson, 91, died of cardiac arrest Wednesday,
Nov. 22, at Careage of Newton.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Reese
Chapel in Newton with the Rev. Mark Jacobs, pastor of First
Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at [Newton Memorial Park Cemetery - this is incorrect. She is buried at Sugar Grove Cemetery.]
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Sunday
morning with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. Memorials
will be accepted for the First Baptist Church of Newton.
The daughter of [Roy and Elva Lowry Peterson - [this is incorrect. Her parents were Philip and Mary Rabenau], she was born
July 28, 1909, in Chicago, Ill. She married Verl D. Johnson
on Dec. 24, 1928, and moved to Colorado in 1953. She married
Willard Ferguson Dec. 29, 1974, moved to California in 1975,
and then returned to Newton in 1980.
Mrs. Ferguson worked in the office at Newton
Manufacturing and retired from The Boulder Valley School
District in 1974. She was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Newton.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Cecilia
and Norman Ringgenberg of Baxter and Helen and Clarence
Davidson of Newton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jesse
(Dick) and Edith Johnson of Ratcliff, Ark.; 10
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands,
an infant daughter, one brother and one grandson. ~ The
