Obituary
John W. Cannon, 56, of Colfax, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at his home in Colfax. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church, 210 N. 2nd Ave. E., in Newton. The family will greet family and friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 29, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be held at Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton. Memorials to Children and Family Urban Ministries of Des Moines or Heifer International may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the day of the service.
John was born to George W. and Wilma I. (O'Riley) Cannon on March 4, 1954, in Newton, Iowa. He graduated from Newton High School in 1972 and attended DMACC. He graduated summa cum laude from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1976. He was united in marriage with Connie R. Reecy on June 17, 1978, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota.
John and Connie took over the family farm northwest of Newton in 1979, farming for more than 25 years. John shared his passion for Social Studies for 33 years with students in the Oakland, Mingo and Colfax-Mingo school districts all in Iowa. The last 12 years of his teaching career were spent at Northview Middle School in Ankeny, teaching and learning from respected colleagues and dear friends.
John was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, where he taught and learned from the Builders Sunday School Class. He also served as a trustee for Sherman Township and for the Sugar Grove Cemetery Association. In 1992 he had the privilege of running for the Iowa State Legislature. John was also very active with the Iowa High School Model United Nations. He enjoyed traveling, raising livestock and reading, especially politics and government. He was also an avid baseball and Minnesota Twins fan.
Survivors include his wife, Connie of Colfax; sons Will Cannon of Newton and Tom (Jen) Cannon of Newton; daughter, Maggie of Colfax; and his sister, Carolyn Cannon of Baxter. He was preceded in death by his parents. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa,
