George J. Baker Dies;
Will Hold Rites Thursday
George J. Baker, 81, of 315 East 4th St. South, a
lifelong resident of the Newton community, died Monday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday at Toland
funeral home.
The Rev. Cromwell C. Cleveland, minister of the Christian
church will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sugar
Grove cemetery.
He is survived by a son, Verl G. Baker of Estes Park,
Colo.; a granddaughter, Mary Verlin Baker of Estes Park,
Colo.; four grandsons and three great grandchildren.
Baker was past grand of the Odd Fellows lodge and a
member of the Knights of Pythias.
The son of William and Mary Ramsey Baker, he was born
March 18, 1879 in Newton.
He was married October 8, 1902 in Newton to Dell Blair,
who died December 14, 1958.
A retired farmer, Baker had been employed at the Toland
funeral home for more than 15 years.
He is also survived by a brother, Harry Baker, of Colfax.

Mrs. Dell Baker Dies Sunday
Mrs. George (Dell) Baker, 77, lifetime Newton resident,
died at her home at 315 East Fourth street South of a heart
attack Sunday afternoon.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at
Toland Funeral home with the Rev. Cromwell C. Cleveland of
First Christian church officiating.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Verl G. Baker,
Colorado Springs, Colo., four grandsons, one granddaughter,
and three great grandchildren.
Mrs. Baker was born to Dora Walters and Lafayette Bair in
Newton June 26, 1881 and married George J. Baker Oct. 8,
1902 at Newton.
She was a member of First Christian church, Rebekah
Lodge, Past Grand club, Rose of Sharon and W. R. C. Burial
will be at the Sugar Grove cemetery near Metz. ~ The Newton
