Obituary - Charles W. Baker

Charles Wilbert Baker, 68-year-old Sherman Township farmer, died at his home about 4:00 o'clock Monday morning after a two weeks' illness.

A lifelong resident of Sherman township, he was born Aug. 1, 1871, near Newton, the son of William and Mary Baker. He was united in marriage to Mary Starr.

Surviving relatives are his widow, and three children, Mrs. Leo Toedt of Baxter, Mrs. Clarence Brockway of Waterloo and Everett Baker of Colfax; also three step children, Mrs. Harry Stinson of Des Moines, Miss Ethel Starr of Des Moines, and Mrs. Russell Kintz of Colfax, a sister, Mrs. Lena Thornton of San Diego, Cal., and two brothers, Harry of Colfax and George of Newton.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Murdoch funeral home. Interment was made in the Metz cemetery.

All grangers of the Oak Ridge community met at the Newton National bank at 1:30 o'clock to attend the funeral services in a body. ~ Jasper County Record, February 15, 1940, page 7, column 5.

Mrs. Bert Baker Dies Saturday;
Services Monday

COLFAX --Funeral services for Mrs. Bert (Mary Adel) Baker, 80, a longtime resident of Colfax, were held this morning at the Colfax Christian Church.

The Rev. Neville G. Clayton, minister of the church, conducted the services. Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery at Metz.

Walters Funeral Home at Colfax was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Baker died Saturday at the Jasper County Home near Newton where she had been a resident for eight weeks.

Mrs. Baker is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Russell Kintz of Colfax; a step-son, Everett Baker of Haverhill; and a step-daughter, Mrs. Ora Buckroyd of Waterloo.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Goodwin, she was born Dec. 17, 1880 at Rhodes.

Prior to her marriage to Bert Baker in 1922, she was a telephone operator at Baxter for five years. ~ The Newton Daily News, August 28, 1961.
