Elizabeth (Martzsel1) McGovern
Born: October 25, 1796 in Duphin Co., Pennsylvania Obituary: Elizabeth McGovernDied: McGovern - at the home of Mr. A.K. Allfree, six miles west of Newton, Friday, Sept 27 [this is probably incorrect]. Mrs. Elizabeth McGovern, in the 86th year of her age. The deceased was born in Duphin Co., Penn. October 25, 1796, removed to Fayette Co., Penn., at the age of 18, at 23 was married to Charles McGovern who died in 1837, leaving the care of eight children. In 1856 she removed with her children to Ill.; and in 1865 she came to Iowa, where she has lived ever since. In 1850 Mrs. McGovern entered the Presbyterian church where she continued until her death. Her early live was full of affliction and for the last ten years has been blind, yet she bore it all with Christian fortitude. Her funeral was conducted by the pastor of the Presbyterian Church of this place and was largely attended. ~ The Newton Journal, Oct 9, 1884. 1. Robert "Ike" Wayne Probasco
Born: December 4, 1939 in Longview, Texas Obituary: Ike ProbascoRobert "Ike" Probasco, 50, of 708 W. 2nd St. S., a resident of Newton since 1941, died Thursday morning, Dec. 7, at Skiff Medical Center following a heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Reese Chapel. The Rev. Frederick Kramer, retired Episcopal clergyman, will conduct services. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery where a flag presentation will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1655. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorials to the American Heart Association may be left at the funeral home. Survivors are his wife, Dorothy; four stepson, Randy Johnson of Newton, Rick Johnson of Griswold, Tracy Johnson of St. Cloud, Minn., and Tim Johnson of Arizona; seven step-grandchildren; three brothers, Joe Probasco of Altoona, Don Probasco of Newton and Tom Probasco of LuVerne; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Probasco, a truck driver, had been employed at the Maytag Co. for 24 years. A member of the Moose Lodge 923 and United Auto Workers, Local 997, Mr. Probasco had served in the Navy in the late 1950s. The son of Ronald A. and Eva Coleen Gale Probasco, he was born Dec. 4, 1939 in Longview, Texas, and was graduated from Newton Community High School. He was married to Dorothy Allfree Johnson March 18, 1989 at Cotter, Ark. Mr. Probasco moved with his family to Newton from Texas. ~ The Newton Daily News, December 8, 1989. |
