The first pioneer grave in the Colfax vicinity was probably that of eight-year old Hester A. Slaughter, daugher of Joseph and Belinda Slaughter. Little "Hattie" died in 1846, shortly after her family came to Iowa of "the fever."
The story is told, in 1846 there was no sawn lumber to make a coffin, so a log was split and hollowed out. The child was laid in the log, it was put back together and that formed her "casket." The little girl was buried on her father's farm, thus the Slaughter Cemetery was begun.
