"Bridges Cemetery is located in Section 8, Newton Township, Jasper County, Iowa. It lies northwest of Newton, two miles west of U.S. Highway 14 and about one-half mile South of N. 59th Ave. W.
"On 13 April 1885, an area eight rods by ten rods (half an acre) was sold to 'The public for cemetery purposes,' for the sum of twenty dollars, by Green Bridges and his wife Sarah Ann Reynolds Bridges. The deed is recorded in Book 137, Page 438 in the Jasper County Recorder's office.
"The Bridges, Colyar, Linder and Reynolds families buried in the cemetery are related. The most recent burial appears to be that of Sarah Reynolds Bridges, who died in 1917. The earliest death date on a tombstone is that of Rufus Linder, who died in 1866. Howver, family traditions says that Israel Perry Bridges was buried there in 1852 along with his two baby daughters, Elizabeth and Susan, who died in 1848 and 1850 respectively. Only an undated stone for the infant S. (Susan) Bridges was found during the cemetery canvas.
"There may be as many as 40 burials in this cemetery. It is well maintained, fenced, and has steps leading up to a gate. In the spring of 1994 the Ridge Road Ramblers 4-H Club replaced the steps, cleared brush and provided a new sign for Bridges Cemetery.
