Westport-On-The-Lake Column
Captain Charles H. Davis, civil war veteran and uncle of Charles and William Hooper of Westport, passed away at Ackley, Iowa, from a stroke of paralysis. He had been failing in health for some time. Mr. Davis was born in Essex county, N.Y., July 21, 1842. When 19 years of age he enlisted and was mustered into service at Saratoga as private in Company A, Seventy seventh Regiment, New York Infantry Volunteers under Captain Arnold and J.B. McKayne to serve three years during the civil war. He participated in many battles including the seige of Yorktown, Va., Williamsburg, Mechanicsville, Goldings Farm, Seven days battle, Golden Farm, Savage Station, White Oak Swamp Bridge, Malbern Hill, Harrison's Landing, Crampton Pass, Maryland and Antietam, Fredericksburg, Salem Church, Deep Run Crossing, Gettysburg, Pa., Fairfield, Marsh Run, Funkstown, Chantilly, Rappahannoc Station, Mine Run, Mine Run Campaign, Germania Ford and Wilderness. At the latter battle he was wounded by gun shot in his left arm and was confined to Campbell hospital, Wash., for 30 days. Captain Davis emerged from the civil war with this brilliant military record and had the title of captain. After the civil war Mr. Davis went to Cedar Falls where he was married to Euretta Roselthey O'Dell on October 9th, 1865. The two lived in Cedar Falls for a time then went to Waterloo and later Iowa Falls. In 1881 they went to Ackley. Eight children were born. Eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren are living. Charles Hooper, his nephew, holds in his possession the buckle which he wore on his belt through the war. He prizes the buckle very much.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. William J. Niemi in Cherokee, Iowa, on October 21. She has been named Miriam Anne. Mrs. Niemi, who taught in the Anchorage schools before her marriage, went to her former home in Iowa from Chitina late in the summer. Mr. Niemi, formerly with the F.E. Co. here and now assistant A.R.C. engineer at Chitina, joined her there last month.

NEW ALBIN, Ia.
- Miss Ruth Gerling is home after spending several days in Dubuque, Ia., visiting her sister, Mrs. Charles Beulow.
-Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weymiller, Jr., are the parents of a boy born last week.
-Albert Kuehn spent the week end in Viola, Wis. He also visited his daughter, Mrs. Lyle Smith, in La Crosse and his son, Dr. Alvin Kuehn, of Viroqua, Wis.
-The William Schroeder family, who have been residents of this city the last few years, moved to Eitzen, Minn, where they will live on a farm. During their stay here Mr. Schroeder was manager of the New Albin Co-operative store, S. P. Twite, a former clerk, now is manager.
-Miss Minnie Raddatz returned Monday to Fond du Lac, Wis., after a week's visit here with the Carl Raddatz family.
-Miss Julia Higgins returned to La Crosse Monday after visiting with Mrs. Ellen Martin.
-Saturday evening a number of guests gathered at the home of Miss Maxine Meyer to help celebrate her eighteenth birthday.
-Mr. and Mrs. Aldine Meyer and daughter, Marian June, and Mrs. Meyer's mother, Mrs. McGinnis, all of Dubuque, Ia., were here over the week end visiting in the William Buckendahl. home.
