Stg. Glenn Jaynes has returned to Wright Field, Dayton O., where he is serving in the chemical laboratories, after an 18-day furlough with his wife and daughter, 2118 W. 14th Street.

Warren F. Ibach, aviation machinist’s mate second class 2614 Home street, has returned on leave after a tour of duty with the navy’s Fleet air wing 11, which operated patrol planes from an Atlantic base.

Pfc. Harold Skidmore, a messenger in the signal corps, met his brother, Sidney Skidmore, electrician’s mate third class, serving on a submarine in the South Pacific on Luzon Island recently. It was their second reunion since being overseas. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Skidmore, 1615 River Drive.

Norman C. Peterson, 2612 Douglas Street, was graduated from officer’s candidate in Fountainbleau, France, on July 5, and commissioned a second lieutenant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Peterson.

Sgt. Clifton M. Temple, whose wife, Agnes lives at 1120 Grandview boulevard has been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action against the enemy. Temple, a high speed radio operator, has recovered fully from his wounds and participated in the battle for Okinawa. Prior to entering the army he was employed by Snyder and Johnson, Humboldt, Iowa.

Seven men from Sioux City now receiving initial naval indoctrination at the naval center, Great Lakes, Illinois are Donald V. Bagley, whose wife lives at 601 Fawcett Street; Pat T O’Shea, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. O’Shea, route 1; George R. Peters, whose wife lives at 302 S. Fowler Street; Oran J. Champlin, son of Mrs. Mayme L. Champlin, 314 ½ W. Eighth Street, Keith E. Bunday, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. Bunday, 106 Main Street; Paul B. Conway, son of Mrs. Elizabeth V. Conway, 1327 S. Helen Street, and Michael W. Tymkowicz, whose wife lives at 2314 Jay Avenue. On completion of their recruit training they will be given a period of leave.

Alex H. Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Paul, 1215 S. Mulberry Street, recently was promoted to the rank of technician fifth grade at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he is stationed with the motor pool detachment of the cavalry school. He has served in New Zealand, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and New Guinea and wears a star for the battle of Guadalcanal.

Bit of Joy “From Heaven” Follows Sadness Period.

Joy and sadness commingled within a period of three weeks for Mrs. Leona Marine, 2922 Rustin street, who gave birth to a son Monday in St. Vincent’s hospital. 

Absent from hospital corridors at the birth was Earl Marine, husband and father, who died May 25 following a heart attack.  Mr. Marine was a veteran of World War I.

J. FRED KRIEGE
J. Fred Kriege, 56, of South Sioux City, Neb., well known farmer of Dakota county, Neb., died Monday night in a hospital here.

Mr. Kriege was born in Remsen, Iowa, January 11, 1889.  He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Kriege, pioneer residents of Plymouth county.  He was educated in Remsen and LeMars schools and was graduated from the University of South Dakota law school in 1915.

He was a member of Phi Delta law fraternity and St. Michael’s Catholic church in South Sioux City.

He married Anne Braunger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Braunger, of Sioux City, here in November of 1920.

Surviving are three daughters, Joanne, S.K.D. third class, and Constance, both of Alemeda, Cal., and Marions of South Sioux City; a son, Fred jr., also of South Sioux City; three brothers, Louis of Remsen, Edward of Minneapolis and Andrew of Sioux City; and one sister, Caroline Kriege, also of Sioux City.

The Larkin funeral home is directing arrangements.

The funeral of J. Fred Kriege, 56, of South Sioux City, Neb., who died Monday night in a hospital, will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in the Cathedral of Epiphany.  Rev. Thomas M. Parle will officiate and interment will be in Calvary cemetery.

The rosary will be recited at 8:30 o’clock this evening in the Larkin chapel.  The body will remain there until the time of services.

Pallbearers for the funeral will be James and Joseph Kramper, Adolph Meier, Rex Durham, Harold Hall and Harold Kerwin.


Our Neighbors in Service

Cushing, Iowa-

Pvt. Wesley Volkert, who was wounded on Iwo Jima March 2, had been returned to duty with the fourth marine division. He was hospitalized in Hawaii and later spent some time at a rest camp there. He recently was awarded the Purple Heart.

Sgt. Reynold Grell has returned home from Europe and is spending a 30-day furlough with his daughter, Jeanette, and his parents and sister, Mr. and Mrs. William Grell, and Darlene.

Merrill, Iowa-

Lt. Bevan G. Holmberg, who has completed B-2 training at the Grand Island, Nebr. army airfield, has left for overseas service. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Holmberg. His wife and two children will live in St. Paul during his absence.

Cherokee-

Pfc. Ralph Hartwig and S. Sgt. John Hartwig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hartwig, Cherokee, met in Innsbruch, Austria, recently. The former is with a infantry division in the Seventh army and is now stationed in Austria. He entered the army in November, 1942, and went overseas October 1944. His brother is with an engineer company in the 6th army, having been in service since October 1941. He spent 17 months on the American defense Canada, going to Europe in March this year.

First Lt. Barbara M. Short, veteran of 10 months overseas in the European theater of operations here, she served on general duty and was awarded the E.T.O ribbon and one battle star, returned to the United States aboard the transport command transatlantic plane landing at La Guardia Field, N.Y. She arrived in Cherokee on Monday to visit her parents and Mrs. James Short.

Paul Campbell, gunner’s mate second class, arrived Friday on a day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Campbell. He has been serving on a destroyer for three years. He will report at Seattle, Wash. at the end of his leave.
