Men And Women In Service
Aviation Cadet J. Ward Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
Johnson, Sergeant Bluff, completed prefight training at San
Antonio, Texas and now is receiving primary pilot training at
Cimarron field, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Ezra A. Davis, first class electric machinist and a member of the
submarine division, was home on a 15-day furlough from San
Francisco, his home port. He enlisted in the navy six years ago.
A brother, Henry Albert Davis, whose home port is New York City,
has been in the navy five years and is a chief electricians
mate in the submarine division. Remme H. Davis, third class
gunners mate, enlisted in the navy a year and a half ago
and is stationed at New Orleans. Private First Class Paul Harley
has been in the Army one year and is at Rosecrans field,
Missouri. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Davis, route
2, Sioux City.
Naval Aviation Cadet, Clair L. Blair has been transferred to
Junction City, Colo., for further training after spending four
months at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa. Private First
Class Victor D. Blair, Jr., a brother, is spending a 21-day
furlough with his parents. He is stationed in the general
hospital at New Orleans, La. Charles Roy Blair; serving on a
destroyer somewhere in the South Pacific, recently received a
promotion to engineers mate third class. The three are the sons
of Mr. and Mrs. V. D. Blair, 621 Wall Street.
Corporal Jim Dolphin, Marine Corps who was wounded when the
marines attacked Bougainville Island, has returned to the United
States west coast for treatment at a naval hospital, according to
word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.T. Dolphin, 3400
Fifth Avenue. For two months after the battle for Bougainville
Island. Corporal Dolphin was hospitalized in the southwest
Pacific area.
A list of three Iowans, described by the navy department as being
wounded, included the name of Private First Class Donald D. Mock,
Marine Corps reserve, of Sioux City.
Roland L. Huff, lieutenant (j.g.) Kalamazoo, Mich., is visiting
in the home of his mother, Mrs. William H. Huff, 2018 S. Royce
Street, before reporting to Fort Schuyler, New York City, for
indoctrination. He was accompanied here by his wife and son and
their son, Thomas Tyler. Mrs. Huff is the former Dorothy
Caldwell. Lieut. Huff is a graduate of Morningside.
Corporal James Dziurawiec, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dziurawiec,
711 S. Westcott Street, who spent a 12-day furlough with his
wife, Sophie, in their home, 411 S. Fowler Street and his parents
and friends, has returned to his station at Fort Dix, New Jersey
Corporal Floyd Hartman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hartman,
Merrill, Iowa has arrived in Sicily, according to word received
from him by his parents. Corporal Hartman is a mechanic in the
air corps and enlisted in February 1942.
Sergeant Ray C. Schmidt, stationed at Camp Stewart, Georgia, is
here on a 10-day furlough visiting his wife, Pauline, and two
sons, Edward and David, 2828 S. Palmetto Street and his mother,
Marie Schmidt, 2819 S. Palmetto Street.
Donald G. Pershing has left for San Diego, Cal., following
enlistment in the marines. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence Rogers Sergeant Bluff, with whom he made his home.
Joel Bruce Edmunds, seaman second Class, has returned to the
Great Lakes Naval training station where he is attending metal
smith school after a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.B.
Edmunds, 2105 Rebecca Street.
Aviation Cadet Kenneth K. Krogh, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Krogh,
Sergeant Bluff, has reported to the army air force training
commands advanced flying school at Altus Army air field,
Altus, Okla., to begin the final nine-week phase of his pilot
training.
Harold Franklin Corkhill, son of Mrs. L.M. Corkhill, 2805
Isabella Street, is enrolled in a short intensified radio
refresher course at the pre-radio naval training school at
Chicago.
Walter Zahnd, motor mechanics mate first class, has
returned to his post at the coast guard station in Duluth, Minn.,
after spending a three-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
E.H. Zahnd, 4030 Monroe Street.
Private Oscar J. Hebstrom has informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
P.N. Hebstrom, 135 S. Fawcett Street that he is on duty with a
bombing squadron somewhere in the Pacific battle area.
Private Richard M. Lamoureaux has returned to Camp Carson,
Colorado, after spending a 21-day furlough which his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J.N. Lamoureaux, 4506 Garfield Street. He had served in
the Aleutian Battle area since July.
Robert Mathaides, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mathaides, former
Sioux Cityans who now live in Omaha, was one of 10 recent
graduates at the naval training school, college of William and
Mary, Williamsburg, Va. The class consisting of coast guards,
navy men, a marine and a Wave recently completed specialized
training in music and personnel work. Mathaides has the
distinction of being one of the first eight coast guards to
receive the rating of specialist in this field. Before reporting
in Boston for duty he expects to spend a February leave in Sioux
City. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. Radzuweit, 2416
Seventh Street.
Private Delmar Strendburg, who is stationed in the ordnance
department at Lake Charles, Louisiana, is spending a 15-day
furlough with his father, Arthur Strendburg, 3600 Malloy Road,
and with friends and relatives at Hartington, Nebraska.
