Men And Women In Service
Don Julius, seaman second class, returned to Farragut, Idaho,
after spending a 15-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
William Julius, 1502 22d street. He recently completed boot
training.
Paul A. Leahy, petty officer third class of the shore patrol,
returned to Farragut, Idaho, after spending a 15-day leave with
his wife and mother at 1113 18th street. He is a former Sioux
City patrolman.
Robert F. Petitjean, seaman first class, son of Mrs. George
Fintzell, 1213 W. Second street, is now in a United States naval
hospital in California, recovering from a back injury received
while on duty in the South Pacific.
Sergeant Arthur Dahl has returned to Camp Shelby, Miss., after a
furlough visit in the home of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Gibbs, 1818
Pierce Street. Sergeant Dahl is a nephew of Mrs. Gibbs.
Fred Kuklentz, seaman second class, son of William Kuklentz of
Sioux City, who was hospitalized at Farragut, Idaho, from
Thanksgiving Day until March 10, has been given an honorable
discharge from the navy. Mr. Kuklentz is now residing with his
mother, Mrs. Sorenson, 3408 Military Road.
Private Marvin F. Bradley, whose wife, Margaret O. Bradley
resides at 2523 Silver Street, has completed his basic training
at the armored replacement training Center, Fort Knox, Ky., and
is prepared for combat duty with an armored unit.
Aviation Cadet James P. Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Olson,
325 36th street, has been graduation from the 61st flying
training detachment. Lodwick aviation military academy, a primary
flying school at Avon Park, Florida and has been transferred to a
basic school for training in the faster and more powerful basic
trainings.
William Martin Donnell, whose family resides at 1912 W. Highland
Avenue, now is a member of the amphibious forces of the navy. He
completed his preliminary training at Camp Bradford, Norfolk,
Va., and has been assigned to the crew of an L.S.T. for active
duty.
C.C. Kopp has been advanced from second lieutenant to first
lieutenant and is serving in the Italian theater of war. His
wife, Astrid Eckstrom Kopp resides with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles L. Kopp, 2719 W. Fifth Street.
Private Arthur E. Day has returned to Camp Custer, Mich., after
spending a furlough with Mr. and Mrs., E.O. Day, 3923 Fourth
Avenue. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Howard Day, formerly of
Moville, Iowa.
Ensign G. W. McKillip, Jr. navy and his wife are spending a leave
in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. McKillip, 1224 25th
street. He has been overseas 18 months, serving in the European
and Asiatic theaters of war. Ensign McKillip is a graduate of
Central High School.
Private James D. Okey, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Okey, 3818
Fourth Avenue, and Private Franklin R. Brown, grandson of Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Lampman, 402 W. 19th street, South Sioux City, has
been assigned to the radio school at the army air field, Sioux
Falls, S.D. for a 20-week course as radio operator-mechanics.
Private First Class Pauline E. Leesley, Marine Corps womens
reserve, has returned to Camp Lejeune, New River, N.C., after
spending a 15-day leave in the home of her sister, Mrs. T. R.
Clauson, 1314 W. 20th street.
Private First Class John D. Mironchik, son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Mironchik, 1701 Sixth Street, has returned home on 15-day
furlough from Alaska where he has been stationed the last 33
months.
Jay D. Rush, naval aviation cadet, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger W.
Rush, 210 S. Westcott Street, who has been stationed at St.
Marys field, Cal., is home on an 18-day leave. He will
leave Monday for Norman, Okla., for further training.
Leonard E. Corkhill, seaman second class, son of Mrs. C. W.
Corkhill, 825 17th Street, has completed his boot training at
Farragut, Idaho, and is spending a 15-day leave at his home here.
Three brothers who are serving with the armed forces are Corporal
Charles W. Corkhill, since June, 1942, with the signal air corps,
Drew field, Tampa, Florida, Stanley E. Corkhill, naval reserve,
Iowa, , State college, Ames, and Harold F. Corkhill, seaman first
class, attending the College of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Ark.
Sergeant Joseph H. Baker, Jr., son of Mrs. Mary S. Baker, 2425
Dearborn Avenue has been promoted to staff sergeant at Camp
Reynolds, Pa. He was graduated from Central High School and has
been in the army for more than a year.
Helen A. Stanton, whose home is at 2309 S. Cleveland Street, has
been promoted to private first class. She is assigned to the Wac
detachment of the tank destroyer school, Camp Hood, Texas
Private Ruth E. Campos , Des Moines, and now is stationed
completed her basic training at Rome, New York. She is the
daughter of J.J. Osborne 1601 W. 29th street, and a former
resident of Sioux City.
Corporal Clifford Schultz, whose wife and son reside at 1120 S.
Alice Street, has been awarded the good conduct medal at his
station somewhere in England. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Schultz, 3415 Edmunds Avenue.

Men And Women In Service
Lieut. Margaret Shaughnesy of Brooks General hospital, Fort Sam
Houston, Texas, is home on a 10-day leave visiting her mother,
Mrs. Kathryn Shaughnesy, 3219 Pierce Street.
Private Ray R.R. Maron, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Maron, 907 Court
Street, whose wife lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William
Odell, 2017 Ingleside Avenue, has completed an orientation course
at an air service command station in England. He has two
daughters, Mary and Pat.
Lieut. Maurice Fitzgibbons, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice
Fitzgibbons, 603 Pearl Street, has reported to the Bainbridge
army airfield, Bainbridge, La., where he will assume
administrative duties. Lieut. Fitzgibbons joined the Air Forces
December 28, 1943.
James C. Brown and Dennis F. Brunson were among those who were
graduated from Company 28, diesel, at the naval training school,
Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa.
Private Chleo J. Weins has returned to Truax field, Madison,
Wis., where he is an instructor, after spending a 10-day leave
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Weins, 2110 W. Sixth Street.
Corporal Victor Johnson recently spent a short furlough with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson, 2824 Third Street after
spending three years service in the Aleutian area. He is
stationed now at Medford, Ore.
Private First class N. Sensanbaugh is spending a 15-day furlough
with his mother, Mrs. E. Sensanbaugh, and his grandmother, Mrs.
A. Suter, 215 George Street. He also will visit relatives at
Freeport and Chicago. He is stationed at Shreveport, La.,
attached to an armored division.
Sergeant James L. Travis of the air corps, an accredited operator
in the control tower at Lowry field, Denver, Colo., is spending a
two-week furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M.
Travis, and his sister Darlene at 815 27th Street.
William H. Marsh has been names honor man of his class in
radioman school at the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho.
His wife, Frances, resides at 804 Pierce Street, and his parents
at Jackson, Nebraska. He is a graduate of the St.
Catherines high school at Jackson. He was chosen honor man
on the basis of grade averages in his class.
Sergeant Max Rich of an anti-aircraft group stationed at Camp
Haan, Cal., is spending a furlough with his mother, Mrs. Sarah
Rich, 719 W. Eighth Street.
Orrin A. Davis, commissary officer, air transport command, Las
Vegas, N.M. has been promoted from first lieutenant to captain.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott J. Davis, route 1, Sioux
City. He is a graduate of Central high school and attended Iowa
State College and the National Business Training School. He
enlisted in the air corps December 29, 1941, and was stationed at
Tampa, Fla. He took officers training course at Camp Lee, Va.,
and was assigned to Las Vegas December 23, 1942. Lilmar Davis, a
brother, third class petty officer, is on a battleship.
Sergeants Art and William Hafits of Kearney, Nebraska, air Base,
twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. David Hafits, 1419 Virginia Street,
spent Easter weekend with their parents. They had as a guest
Staff Sergeant Max Brownstein of Buffalo, N.Y. who also is
stationed at the Kearney base.
Private First Class Harold R. Edwards, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy
Edwards, 2508 First Street, is home on a 15-day furlough from
Camp White, Ore., where he is serving in the infantry. He was
accompanied by his wife.
Jack Reinking, stationed at Camp Shelby, Miss., has been promoted
to staff sergeant, his parents, Dr. and Mrs. M.E. Reinking, 3403
Jennings Street, learned Tuesday.
George Nuessle, 1425 Irene Street, has been assigned to the
Marine Corps station at San Diego. He left Sioux City March 31.
Keith R. Sluyter, son of Mrs. W.H. Sluyter, 4226 ½ Van Buren
Street, has begun flight training at the 55th army air forces
flying detachment, Bennettsville, S.C. upon completing his
primary flight training. Aviation Cadet Sluyter will be advanced
to a basic flying school in the eastern flying training command.
Private Ivan B. Gill, on a 20-day furlough, and his wife are
visiting in the home of their parents, Mrs. Irma B. Gill, 402 S.
Rustin Avenue and Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Sease, 406 S. Helen Street.
Private Gill is a member of the army air corps and for the last
four months has been stationed at the army airfield, Lincoln,
Nebraska where he recently completed his technical training in
airplane mechanics.
Everett N. Delashmutt, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Delashmutt, 1901
24th Street, has been promoted to first lieutenant at Rosencrans
field, MO. He is the eldest of three brothers serving in the army
air corps. He is a graduate of Central High School and of Wayne
State College, Wayne, Nebraska. For the last year he has been an
instructor and navigator. His wife is the former Sarah Shipley of
Dennison, Texas. Lieut. Delashmutt enlisted August 8, 1940.
Hal F. Barger, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Hal Barger, 929 S. Martha
Street, recently was graduated from the Naval Air Technical
Training Center at Norman, Okla., and is awaiting active duty
orders.
Capt. George E. Conroy, Shepard apartments, who recently returned
from overseas, is stationed at an Army Air Force redistribution
station at Miami Beach, Florida, awaiting further assignment.
Capt. Conroy flew for 1,025 hours as a C-47 and C-57 pilot in the
Middle East. His wife, Aris Lucille Conroy, resides in Sioux City
and his mother, Mrs. Edith Conroy lives at Gaines, Mich.
Lieut. Eileen OBrien, army air corps nurse at Amarillo
airfield station hospital, Amarillo, Texas is a guest of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. OBrien, 206 12th Street. Seaman
Second Class Robert Montgomery of Norfolk, Nebr., a nephew of Mr.
and Mrs. OBrien, stationed at Great Lakes naval training
school, also is a guest.

Men And Women In Service
Private First Class Jack Buckley, stationed at Camp Sibert, Ala.,
is spending a furlough with his father, H.M. Buckley, 2500 Center
Street.
Private Nile A. Weins, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Weins, 2110 W.
Sixth Street, recently graduated from the school of the army air
force training command at Canute field, Ill. He had taken a
course in electronics and in various technical operations vital
to the maintenance of fighting planes.
Richard Elliott, husband of Mrs. Albina Joan Elliott, 2302
Isabella Street, is receiving initial naval indoctrination at the
United States naval training station, Great Lakes, Ill. His boot
training consists of instruction in seamanship, military drill
and general naval procedure, including aptitude tests to
determine whether he will be assigned to a naval service school
or to immediate active duty at sea. Upon completion of this
recruit training, he will spend a period of leave at his home
here.
Benjamin W. Bastian, 33, husband of Lois R. Bastian, 1704 Villa
Avenue, is one of eight Sioux Cityans who are receiving their
initial naval indoctrination at the naval training station, Great
Lakes, Ill. Their recruit training completed, the men will spend
a period of leave at home. They also include; Joseph B. Russell,
Jr. 30, husband of Margaret J. Russell, 1118 28th Street; William
L. Bradbury, 31, husband of Helen L. Bradbury, 1528 Nicollet
Street; Harold R. Johnson, 29, husband of Myrtle M. Johnson,
Moville; Wilfred Maycock, 34, husband of Vivian L. Maycock, 3017
Grand Avenue; Byron R. Spindler, 24, husband of Rose L. Spindler,
311 W. 25th Street; Marvin S. Norberg, 34, husband of Eleanor E.
Norberg, 1007 La Plante Street and James F. Thompson, 31, husband
of Gertrude A. Thompson, 2423 Rebecca Street.
Lieut. Robert S. Huie, Jr. has been transferred from Australia to
New Guinea. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Huie, Sr., 903
12th Street.
Lester L. Closner, aviation machinist mate second class, has
returned to Pensacola, Fla., after spending a 15-day leave with
his mother, Mrs. Josephine Schurdevin, 1519 Silver Street. He has
two brothers in the service, Sergeant Arthur E. Closner in the
Aleutians, and Private Robert G. Closner, in the South Pacific.
Dwight E. Nystrom, petty officer first class has departed for an
overseas assignment, after spending a 10-day leave with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Nystrom, 1300 26th Street, and his
wife, Roberta, 609 Market Street. He recently spent 16 months on
the north Atlantic.

Men And Women In Service
Lieut. Col. H.I. Down, executive officer of a hospital evacuation
unit has arrived safely somewhere overseas, according
to a cable received by his wife, Mrs. H. I. Down, 4317 Perry Way,
Cal. Down formerly was a doctor here.
Elmer C. Rice, husband of Florence A. Rice, 1423 Judd Street, has
been promoted to sergeant at Biggs field, Texas where he is
assigned to the B-24 four engine bomber training program.
Seaman Second Class Pauline Josephine Hutmacher, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. M.A. Hutmacher, 1712 W. First Street, has completed her
basic training and indoctrination course at the naval training
school for Waves, the Bronx, N.Y., and is proceeding to the
United States naval training school, Oklahoma A. & M.
College, Stillwater, Okla. Before she entered service, Seaman
Hutmacher was employed as clerk-typist with the war department,
Washington, D.C. She attended Central High School and the Felt
and Tarrant Comptometer School.
Private Ward Mandel, stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas is spending a
furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.W. Mandel, 1623
Isabella Street.
Maj. Carl F. Youngworth, stationed with the army air corps in
England for nearly two years, visited his mother recently, Mrs.
Lydia Youngworth, 3119 E. Second Street, while enroute to his
home in Yankton, S.D.
Private First Class Hacker of Camp Forrest, Tenn., is spending an
11-day furlough visiting his mother, Mrs. Nellie Hacker, 4518
Arthur Street. He is a member of the medical corps connected with
the glider troop division at Camp Forrest.
Private First Class Bert G. Welch has returned to Camp Butner,
N.C. after spending 17 days with his wife and daughter Sherry and
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert F. Welch, 219 S. Howard Street.
Corporal Donald A. Whitlock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Whitlock,
1704 Wright Avenue, is spending a 13 day furlough at home with
his parents. He is stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas with an
anti-aircraft division.
Lorrin W. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Johnson, 2213
Douglas Street, and Gene K. Carey, son of Mr. and Mrs. George P.
Carey, 2601 Military Road, have enrolled in the pre-radio naval
training school at the naval armory, Michigan City, Ind., for a
months radio refresher course, consisting of the basic
principles of electricity, algebra and slide rule fundamentals.
Upon completing the course they will be sent to an advanced radio
school where they will be eligible to win petty officer rating
before being sent on active duty.
Millard LeMoine Cormany, son of Mrs. Addie Cormany, 109 ½ Sioux
Street, seaman first class and William G. Omer, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Cliff Omer, 18 Sixteenth Street, seaman first class, were
members of a class recently graduated from the naval air
technical training center, Norman, Okla. The newly graduated men,
who studied the aviation specialty field work, now are awaiting
orders for active duty at sea, or at a shore station.
