Men And Women In Service

Corporal Ted Coomer recently was transferred from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, to the University of Kentucky at Lexington where he is continuing his studies in engineer surveying. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Coomer, 3 Stewart Avenue.

First Class Private Robert C. (Pinky) Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Olson, 1907 Ingleside Avenue, is spending a seven-day furlough with his parents. He is stationed at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.

Private Robert B. Wiley, Priscilla apartments, has been assigned to the medical replacement training center at Camp Robinson, Arkansas. He will be in training there for 11 weeks.

Harry Karolick, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Karolick, 901 Pacific Street, has been promoted to first sergeant of the boat company to which he is attached. He is stationed at Quarry Heights, Canal Zone. A graduate of Central High school, he entered the service May 29, 1942, and arrived in the Caribbean area July 15, 1942.

Private Bill E. Petersen, 5500 Garretson Avenue, has been assigned to the medical replacement training center at Camp Robinson, Arkansas. He will be in training there for 11 weeks.

Private First Class Clarence Wyant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wyant, 3419 Orleans Avenue, has begun a specialized course in the motorcycle department of the armored force school at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Lee Cooper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cooper, 3015 Stone Park Boulevard, has been advanced to the rank of Private First Class in the Marine Corps. He is stationed somewhere in the Pacific.

James E. Taney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael E. Taney of 3102 Dodge Avenue, recently completed advanced ground training at the army air force school at the Consolidated Aircraft factory in San Diego, California.

Private Melvin J. Molden, a member of a signal service regiment in North Africa, has written an original poem entitled I Hate War, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Molden, have received a copy. Young Molden writes that in the hearts of young soldiers who are doing the fighting there is hate-“not hate for one another country or for another man, but hate for war and for what it stands.” Young Molden enlisted in February, 1941, and left Sioux City with the national guards for Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. He has been overseas seven months.

Wallace Treska, son of Mrs. H.S. Tebeau, 2729 Isabella Street, is in the merchant marine stationed at Santa Catalina Island, Avalon, California. His wife, the former Eileen Cole, and son reside in Glendale, California.

Jack W. Gossard, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil I. Gossard, 2215 S. Lakeport Street, recently inducted into the navy, has been assigned to the Great Lakes training station. He was sports writer for the Tribune at East High School in 1940-41.

Second Lieut. Marie T. Benjamin of an army nurse corps here has arrived at Camp Poll, Louisiana, for duty at the station hospital. She received her commission in April and has served at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. A daughter of Mrs. Marie G. Benjamin, 1423 Summit Street, she attended Briar Cliff college and was graduated in 1942 from St. Joseph’s College of nursing.

Private Orval Dye, recently transferred from Santa Maria, California to Pendleton, Oregon, has been advanced to corporal. His wife, the former Constance Er4ickson, returned recently from Santa Maria after spending about three months with her husband.

Private Harry Glarum, stationed with the medical corps at Fort Lewis, Washington, is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Glarum, 2813 Ridge Avenue.

Sidney London, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam London, 3829 Jackson Street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant after completion of an officer’s candidate course at Fort Bennings, Georgia. Lieut. London was inducted into the army May 28, 1942, and served with the engineer amphibian command before goi9ng to officer’s school. He is a graduate of Moville High School and the University of Iowa.

Aviation Cadet Max A. Braunger, 406 26th street, has been transferred to the army air field at Garden City, Kansas, for further training. He attended Trinity College and the University of Iowa. Before entering the army, he was engaged in the poultry and egg business here.

Private Robert J. Thornton, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo J. Thornton, 2100 Ross Street, has been graduated from the factory training school operated by the army air force at the Republic Aviation Corporation plant at Farmingdale, N.Y. Private Thornton was inducted into the army June 3, 1942.

Private John Leonard Claude, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Claude, 2221 Boies Street, has completed a course of study in army air force clerical duties at the Colorado State College of Education.

Private Richard B. Engleman, Jr. 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Engleman, 2600 First Street, has completed a course in air force clerical duties at the training detachment of the United States army air forces technical training command on the campus of Colorado State College of Education.

Men And Women In Service

Sergeant Horace B. Johns is stationed at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, where he is attached to a ship hospital unit. His twin brother Private Robert Johns is stationed in Hawaii. Both are the sons of Mrs. H.B. Johns of Flint, Mich. and are former Sioux Cityans. They are Central High School graduates.

Corporal Jack Lowe has returned to Camp Sutton, North Carolina, after having spent a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Lowe, 2025 Howard Street.

Leo M. Martin, stationed at Camp Butner, North Carolina, has been promoted from sergeant to staff sergeant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Martin, 121 13th Street.

Private Kenneth D. Harmon, 2107 Heights Avenue, has arrived at Fort Knox, Kentucky, for three-month training course in the armored force replacement center.

Ensign Gordon Taft has left to Florida and a training course in submarine service after spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Taft, 1715 W. 16th Street. He recently was commissioned at the naval reserve midshipmen’s school at New York City.

Private Thomas Leo Ryan has returned to Camp Cook, California, after spending a furlough with his wife, the former Dorothy Grimes, and sister, Mrs. Mary Gloe, 1517 Carlin Avenue.

Martin D. Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Bailey, 4212 Tyle Street, has completed an aviation mechanics course at the Amarillo, Texas, army airfield.

Milton R. Booker, whose wife lives at 1309 24th street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the army, on graduation from the transportation corps officer candidate school at Mississippi State College. He has been ordered to active duty.

Private John Sponder. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sponder, 2500 Shields Avenue, is home on furlough from Camp Barkeley, Texas. Sergeant Steve Sponder, a brother, is home on furlough from Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. There are two other brothers in the armed forces, Private Charles Sponder at Camp Barkeley, Texas and Private Leo Sponder, in Africa.

Sergeant LeRoy C. Weigel of the army air corps has returned to his post at Berry field, Nashville. Tenn. His wife accompanied him. They spent a week of a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.E. Weigel of Denver, Colorado and the remainder of the period with friends and relatives here.

Corporal Dorace W. Parson, a cook in a field artillery unit at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Parson, 1527 Waugh Street.

Sioux Cityans In Navy V-12 - 19 to Program at Iowa State College July 1
Ames, Iowa—Special; The Navy’s v-12 program, designed to train officers for the nation’s fleet, will begin at Iowa State College July 1. More than 800 men will be assigned to the local school.

Men from Sioux City include Kenneth LeRoy Bolton, William D. Bottolfson, George Warren Hill, Gilbert Ronald Haskins, Kenneth Harold Holmes, Judson Bevin Jenkins, Robert Charles Johnson, Vernon John Kasper, Warren Clare Kingsbury, James Allen McCall, Robert A. McKercher, James Lewis Myers, Paul Weber Peterson, Floyd M. Reister, Robert Paul Schenk, Raymond M. Smith, Hubert Ossian Sharp, Wayne Marvin Thompson and James H. WaxWeiler.

The navy will hold the men here for instruction in 16-week terms with the number of terms varying according to the training requirements. Aviation cadets will receive two terms of training. Engineers for general duty will receive six terms and engineer specialists eight terms of training. The students will be in class from 52 to 58 hours per week.
