SIOUX CITY MAN AMONG 8 IOWANS HELD BY JAPAN.
Washington, —(AP)— The war department announced Wednesday the names of eight Iowa soldiers, who are war prisoners of Japan. They are: Corporal James Attey, Boone; Cape. Milton Morgan, Logan; Private Lester Peterson, Modale; Private First Class Frederick Podeyn, Fort Madison; Staff Sergeant Donald Regan, Iowa City; Private George F. Van Houten, Sioux City; and Private Oliver Wetzel, Spencer.

OUR NEIGHBORS in the SERVICE
Moville, Iowa - Private First Class Kenneth L. Drevs, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Chris Drevs, arrived Sunday for a 12-day furlough. He is
stationed at Camp Blanding, Florida.
Moville, Iowa - Sergeant Gaylord McMahon, stationed at Nashville,
Tenn., is visiting his mother, Mrs. V. McMahon. On his return he
will begin officer training.
Moville, Iowa - Corporal William Bashaw, stationed at New York,
spent five days with his wife and daughter here.
Moville, Iowa - Herman Keuck, son of B.W. Keuck, has been
promoted to Sergeant. He is assigned to an academic squadron,
Sheppard field, Texas.
Sloan, Iowa - Merle A. Woods son of Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Woods here,
has completed radio training at Northwestern university and has
been transferred to San Diego, Cal. Woods, a seaman third class,
spent a three-day leave here.
Remsen, Iowa - John J. Gordon, former assistant cashier of the
First Trust and Saving Bank here, has been transferred from Camp
Carson to Camp Hale, Colorado.
Remsen, Iowa - William C. Kramer, son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Kramer, departed for Lawrence, Kansas where he will enroll for
the v-12 college program.
Remsen, Iowa - Milo Bellmyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Bellmyer,
has been promoted to staff sergeant and is doing considerable
flying in England.
Remsen, Iowa - Corporal Oliver Pfeiffer is visiting friends and
relatives while on a 10-day furlough from Camp Dred field,
Florida. He is attached to the signal air warning service.
Holstein, Iowa - Aviation Cadet James E. Jatha, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Edwin F. Jatha, has finished primary flight at Vernon, Texas
and has been transferred to the Enid army air field, Enid,
Oklahoma for basic training. He was recently married to miss
Maxine Lohff of Des Moines.
Spencer, Iowa - Lieut. Merton G. Straub of Spencer, who has been
flying with the royal air force in England, has transferred to
the United States flying force there. He was one of 59 Americans
to change recently.
Remsen, Iowa - Word was received from Camp Livingston,
Alexandria, La. That Verdon J. Doud, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L.
Doud, Oyens, was seriously injured during maneuvers in Louisiana.
Mr. and Mrs. Doud have left for Camp Livingston.
Remsen, Iowa - Charlotte Koch, WAC, from Pine Camp, N. Y. is
spending a furlough with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Koch.
Remsen, Iowa - Private First Class Alphonse Ludwig left for Camp
Barkeley, Texas, after spending a 10 day furlough with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ludwig.

Mapleton, IowaCharles D. Gambs, son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. L.N. Gambs of Smithland, has been commissioned a second
lieutenant upon completion of the officer candidate course at the
infantry school at Fort Benning, Georgia. He enlisted in the army
September 19, 1941, and served at Fort Ord, California, and Camp
Roberts, California. He is a graduate of Smithland High School.
Moville, IowaStaff Sergeant Wilbur (Borny) Bornschein, son
of Dr. and Mrs. Fred Bornschein, who is the gunner on a Flying
Fortress, the Hell-Lena, based in England, has written his
parents he has shot down two enemy planes. He has been abroad
only eight weeks. Boy if you just see the number of planes
going out. At times the sky is black with them, then the R.A.F.
goes out at night. Believe me, Germany is taking an awful
pounding, he wrote. Since the letter, Mrs. Bornschein
received a birthday telegram from her son.
Sergeant Bornschein enlisted July 7, 1942, at Des Moines and took
his gunnery training at Las Vegas, Nev. His wife Rosalie is
employed at the Ankeny ordnance plant at Des Moines.
Hornick, IowaAviation Cadet Lorenzo R. Arnold was included
in the latest class to complete re-flight training for pilots at
the San Antonio, Texas, aviation center.
Storm Lake, IowaDon Elk, former Storm Lake high school
athletic star and a freshman basketball numeral winner the last
season at Iowa State College, has received a call to report July
11 at Jefferson barracks, Missouri, to begin training in the army
air corps. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Elk of Storm Lake.
His father served overseas in the last war.
Salix, IowaL.H. Whittecar, naval gunners mate, third
class, spent a few days visiting his mother and friends here and
friends at Moville. He returned recently from North Africa and
will report soon to New York.
Private Ed Schopp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schopp, is here from
Camp Gruber, Okla., on a five-day furlough.
Smithland, Iowa Alva D. Boyer, Jr., has been promoted to
technical sergeant in the signal corps. He is stationed at
Lexington, Ken.
Sheldon, Iowa Lieut. K.W. Myers of Sheldon, stationed at
Randolph field, Texas, as a flight physician will complete his
training July 12 and be transferred to Kelly field, Texas.
Corporal Donald Gintert, in Australia with American troops has
been moved 800 miles to another base, according to a letter
received by his parents.
Cadet Roger Swenning of Sheldon is with the United States air
force in England.
Maynard Alfstad of Sheldon is stationed at Jefferson barracks,
Missouri and John Alfstad is at the Great Lakes naval training
station. Both are sons of Mrs. Harry Alfstad of Sheldon.

Sheldon, Iowa Eddie Clarke and Danny Reagan stationed at
Farragut, Idaho, receiving their boot training are in
Sheldon on furlough.
Louis Wolff, son of Mrs. Theodore Wolff, has been promoted to
staff sergeant. He is at Seattle with the army air corps.
Sergeant William Broekman is spending a furlough in Sheldon,
being stationed at Camp Livingston, Louisiana, in the medical
corps.
Corporal Donald Platt, stationed with the air corps at Alliance,
Nebraska, is spending a furlough with his parents here.
Sergeant Bert Erkes, stationed at San Rafael, California is
spending a 15-day furlough here.
Private Henry Riemersma returned to Indiantown Gap, Pa., after
having spent a furlough with his parents.
Roy D. Bodie has been promoted to corporal at the medical
replacement training center, Camp Barkeley, Texas.
Seaman Boyd P. Ellerbroek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ellerbroek,
is home on furlough.

Roy Hook, whose wife, Rachel, reside at 2515 Warner Avenue, has been promoted to gunner second class, in the Navy. He enlisted September 16, 1942.
Corporal Donald B Smith of Patterson field, Ohio has returned on a 10-day furlough to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Smith 2516 Center Street, and a sister, Mrs. C.E. Donovan, 1000 Whitcher Avenue.
Private Gerald D. Smith has completed a field telephone school course conducted by the signal battalion, marine corps base, San Diego, California and was promoted to private first class as result of his efforts in the school.
Private First Class Roger W. Reisdorph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward W. Reisdorph, 1627 Avery Way, has been transferred from Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, Texas, to Dodge City Army Air Field, Kansas, where he is a member of a glider training group.
Eldon H. Comstock, petty officer third class, has been here on a visit with his grandmother,m Mrs. Emma Van De Walker, 1929 Sherman Avenue. For the past eight months he has been on convoy duty in the Atlantic and is being transferred to duty on the Pacific Coast.
Sergeant John S. Corliss, formerly of 4433 Garfield Street, has been promoted from the rank of private and is assigned to the tank destroyer replacement training center at North Camp Hood, Texas.
Clarence D. Knox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Knox, 910 12th Street, has graduated from an intensive course in airplane mechanics at Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, Texas.
Private First Class Marion Krowkowski, at home on furlough from Santa Rosa, California, is spending 15 days here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Krowowski, 1303 S. Fairmount Street, and will return to camp Tuesday with his bride-to-be, Sally Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson of Salix, Iowa.
Private First Class C.J. Hauswald has returned to the army air base at Casper, Wyoming after spending a seven-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. K. Hauswald, 2218 Hamilton Street. He is a graduate of Central High School.
Robert M. Stevens, seaman third class, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Stevens, 604 S. Alice Street is spending a 15-day leave with his parents. He is stationed at Cape May, N.J.
Herman W. Tott, 22, electrician’s mate, stationed with the navy at New York City, is spending a 16-day leave in the home of an uncle, Raymond Nelson, 3031 Leech Avenue. He saw considerable combat service in North African and Chinese waters.
Arthur Bucy, seaman second class and son of Mrs. Martha Culver, 709 Nebraska Street, has returned home on leave from the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho.
Private Harold M. Slotsky is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Slotsky, 910 16th Street, prior to entering the air corps. He formerly was stationed at Fort McClelland, Alabama.
Private Donald Randall, Camp Polk, Louisiana, is spending a convalescent furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Addison Randall, 707 Center Street. Mr. and Mrs. Randall returned recently from visiting another son, Corporal Bob Randall, stationed at Colorado Springs. Another son, Addison L. Randall, seaman first class, is in the South pacific.
Private Michael P. Noonan, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Noonan, 2811 Jennings Street, recently left here to report for duty in the army medical corps at Camp Barkeley, Texas.
Private Robert M. Babb, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Babb, whiting, Iowa, has been spending a five-day furlough with his parents and also in the home of his sister, Mrs. Russell Christy, 1213 Washington Avenue. He is stationed at Camp Haan, California.
Private First Class Kenneth Shadewald, Camp Haan, California, is spending a furlough with his wife, 306 Swanson Apartments. Private Shadewald is a son of Mrs. A. Smolsky.
Private Anthony Uhl, Camp Carson, Colorado, son of Mrs. Mary Uhl, 1417 25th Street, is here to spend a furlough with his wife and son, Anthony Jr., 511 Perry Street.
Arthur Wright, seaman second class, has returned to Camp Waldron, Farragut, Idaho, after spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wright, 4002 Hamilton Street.
Richard Costello has completed eight weeks “boot” training at the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho and is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Costello, 512 Myrtle Street.

Robert M. Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Hall, 709 W. Second
Street, has begun training as an apprentice seaman in the navy at
Camp Scott, Farragut, Idaho.
Donald E. Wittsche, aviation radio mechanic third class, has
returned to Quonset Point, R.I, after spending a 10-day leave
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wittsche, 2005 Rebecca
Street.
Private Eugene Fox, son Mrs. Roy Fox, 701 W. Third Street, has
completed basic training in the armored forces at Fort Knox,
Kentucky.
Private Phillip Lubman, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. Lebman, 1018 14th
Street, has been transferred from Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, to
Texas A. & M. College, College Station, Texas for an
engineering course.
Michael S. Malinosky, boatswains mate first class, and his
wife are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Malinosky, 3803
Macomb Avenue. He is stationed at the Norfolk, Va., fleet service
school.
William J. Wagner, coxswain, is spending a 15-day leave with his
wife and daughter at their home, 3803 Macomb Avenue.
Private Rene Pearson, son of Ludwig Pearson, 4606 Perry Creek
road has arrived at the finance replacement training center at
Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana to begin basic training in
finance.
C. William Burkle, aviation machinists mate third class, is
visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis C. Burkle, 415 Myrtle
Street, on a 12-day leave. His wife, who also is here, is
secretary to the associates regional labor representative, W.P.B.
Chicago. The sailor id stationed at Brunswick, Me.
Corporal Frank B. Huston, who formerly resided at 4509 Garfield
Street, recently was advanced to a sergeants rank at the
armored replacement training center in Fort Knox, Kentucky. A son
of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Huston, Waukee, Iowa, he has been in the
service for more than a year.
Staff Sergeant Martin Donnell is visiting his sister, Mrs. Dean
Green, 3420 22nd Street and his parents, Mr. And Mrs. W.B.
Donnell, Kingsley, Iowa, on a 14-day furlough from Randolph
field, Texas, where he is stationed. His wife accompanied him.
Milton O. Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Meyer, 1524 W. Sixth
Street, stationed at Great Lakes, Ill., has been appointed a
petty officer in the naval reserve.
Robert Slothower, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Slothower, 2109 W.
Third Street, who has been in the navy about a year and a half,
cabled his parents Monday. He was a Pearl Harbor and is a
survivor of the cruiser Helena.
Private First Class Martin Dene Purcell, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.U.
Purcell, 1331 S. Paxton Street, is recovering from an operation
for acute appendicitis at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
Harry Kane, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Kanofsky, has been promoted to
first lieutenant. Lieut. Kane is stationed at Camp Carson,
Colorado.

Sioux City Man Pilots Bomber in Air Victory
Cario.—(AP)—The gunner of a Liberator bomber piloted by Lieut. Edward Mitchell of Sioux City was credited with shooting down an Italian transport plane following the heavy raid on Naples last Saturday.
Mitchell was on his homeward run when the transport was sighted flying at 14,000 feet. Staff Sergeant Jack P. Shepherd of Benton, Ill, swung his guns into action and the Italian plane was seen to crash on a beach.
First Lieut. Edward R. Mitchell, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mitchell, 201 Webster building, Fifth and Jackson streets, last June was one of eight Iowa members of the United States Army Eighth air force in England awarded decorations for valor and exceptional performance against the enemy. At that time he received the air medal.
Lieut. Mitchell was accepted as an aviation cadet by the air force January 3, 1942, and took pilot training on the Pacific coast. He was graduated from Trinity high school and attended Trinity college. He also took an aeronautical course at Morningside college.
