Men in Service

Robert L. Hammond, son of Mrs. E.A. Hammond, 3128 Fourth Avenue, and Robert W Essig, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.D. Essig, 2350 Nash Street have arrived at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. for army air force instructions prior to appointment as aviation cadets in the army air force.

Lieut. Kenneth J. Kinney, grandson of Mrs. Mattie Whitted, 507 15th street, and his wife spent the weekend with Mrs. Whitted. He graduated from the officer’s training school at Aberdeen, Md. He is stationed in Omaha.

William H Folk, son of Mr. and Mrs. L Folk, 2306 W. Fifth Street, who is in the air corps somewhere in South America, has been promoted to the rank of corporal. His wife Agnes Folk resides at 1709 Riverside Boulevard.

Vincent L. McMahon, aviation machinist mate, third class, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.J. McMahon, 1921 Riverside Boulevard, has graduated from the naval training station at Navy pier, Chicago.

Private George Williges, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Williges, 2016 Summit Avenue, has been transferred from Fort Snelling Minnesota to Camp Wolters, Texas.

Corporal P.J. Ryan has returned to his post in the British West Indies after spending a furlough with his mother, Mrs. Steve Ryan.

Private Lavern Jansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Jansen, 2520 S. Helen Street, has returned to duty at the marine base at Camp Pendleton, California, following a visit with his parents and wife.

Robert N. Kiffe, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Brown, 3112 Jackson Street, who had been serving on shore duty with the coast guard at Galveston, Texas has been promoted to the rating of seaman first class.

Erwin Barrett Heifner, 1320 26th Street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the army at the field artillery officer candidate school at Fort Still, Oklahoma.

Louis Dimsdale, a lieutenant in the army medical corps, is stationed at Shick army hospital, Clinton, Iowa, after several months at Claiborne, Louisiana. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dimsdale, 2023 Pierce Street.

Edward Sherman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sherman, 1608 Summitt Street has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis to the preflight school at Wisconsin State Teachers College. Milwaukee.

Lloyd E. Booth, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Booth, 4049 Harrison Street, is receiving his basic army training at Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Gerald F. Hutmacher, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Hutmacher, 1712 W. First Street is taking naval basic training at Farragut, Idaho.

Private Arthur L. Phelps, son of Mrs. Alice Phelps, 1203 Eighth Street, has returned to Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, after a seven-day furlough here. Private Phelps is in the medical corps.

Charles Wallman, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Wallman, 1031 S. Mulberry Street, has been promoted from corporal to sergeant at the ordnance motor base, Stockton, California.

Sergeant J.W. Tackett left for Lowry field, Colorado, after spending a six-day furlough with his wife at 2121 W. Third Street.

Harold Thomas Long, son of Mrs. Bertha Long, 1618 W. Sixth Street, has graduated from the training aviation maintenance school at Norman, Okla., and is now a seaman third class. He enlisted last November 3.

Corporal Marion B. Gustine and Mrs. Gustine have arrived from Camp Walters, Texas, to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Esthergaard, 2135 McKinley Street.

Francis Tischler, seaman first class, has returned to New York City after spending a 10-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Ed Lentz, and his aunt, Miss Kathryn Theisen. Seaman Tischler, a graduate of Trinity High School, is now serving in Atlantic convoy duty and has been in the navy 17 months.

Private Jack Stronka, midyear Central High School graduate and former announcer for a radio station here under the name John Edwards, is now stationed in an armored infantry regiment at North Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Michael G. Norgelas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael C. Norgelas, 1018 Grand avenue, has been selected to become an electrician’s, mate in the navy and had been assigned to a 16-week course of study at the Great Lakes naval training station.

John Bradley, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Bradley, 1410 Geneva Street, has been promoted to private first class at Camp Adair, Oregon.

Ivan Bradley, fireman first class, will leave Sunday for the Great Lakes naval station after spending a leave here with his mother, Mrs. Eva L. Bradley, 2016 S. St. Aubin Street.

Private Robert Kudrie, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Kudrie, 709 Rebecca Street is receiving his training in the cadet air corps at Superior State College, Superior, Wis. He was transferred there from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri where he was sent five weeks ago from Morningside College as a member of the army reserves.

Private Merlin Heslop, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Heslop, 4447 Polk Avenue, has returned to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, after spending a 5-day furlough with his parents.

Corporal Paul R. Underwood, of Camp Bowie, Texas, is spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Underwood, 410 Myrtle Street.

Corporal Robert J. Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Hoffman, 611 Iowa Street, recently attached to the army corps proving ground at Elgin field, Florida, has been promoted to air corps cadet and transferred to Atlantic City, N.J. He enlisted in November 1941.

Donald C. Burke, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Burke, 1925 W. Third Street, is taking his basic army training at Camp Roberts, California.

Technical Sergeant Rex Moad, who is in the signal corps, has been stationed at Miami Beach, Florida. He is the son of R.W. Moad.

Robert P Henderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Henderson, 1306 Twenty-Sixth Street, has completed the army air force technical training command school course at Yale University and has been commissioned a second lieutenant. His first assignment will be command of a crew charged with aircraft maintenance.

Men In Service

Private Leverne McGraw, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. McGraw, 1845 S. Cedar Street, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri to Southern, Illinois Normal University, Carbondale, Illinois for a three to five month course of study under the army air force training program. His brother, Dyane D. McGraw is receiving “boot” training at the United States marine base, San Diego, Cal.

Private John Flannery, son of Mrs. Laura Flannery, 901 Nebraska Street, is at home on a furlough. He is stationed at Camp Crowden, Missouri.

Kenneth E. Bushnell, second class seaman, has been transferred from Boston to Coddington point, Newport, R.I. He received “Boot” training at St. Augustine, Florida. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. G.N. Bushnell, 905 Fredette Ave.

Private Dick Miller, attached at the army air corps and stationed at Tampa, Florida is on furlough, visiting his wife who resides at 2013 W. Palmer Avenue, and his sister, Mrs. A.W. Erickson, 2016 W. Third Street. Private Miller is a son of Mrs. A.W. Miller of Osceola, Nebraska. He was inducted last September 1.

Seaman Robert McLean, son of Mr. and Mrs. James McLean, 2121 Heights Avenue is home on leave from Great Lakes naval training station, where he has been stationed for the last three months.

Private Ronald W. Davis, son of Mrs. E.D. Sherman, 4411 Laurel Avenue, is stationed for basic training in the army at Camp Butner, North Carolina. He attended East High school and is a graduate of Pasadena junior college, Pasadena, Cal.

James K. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Smith, 3427 Third Avenue, has been accepted for meteorology training in the army air force and now is receiving basic training at Keesler field, Mississippi.

James Robert Sturges, son of S.N. Sturges, 3511 Parkview Boulevard, has reported to the naval training station at Farragut, Idaho.

Homer Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer W. Johnson, 1805 Jackson Street, is stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama, where he was sent from Fort Des Moines.

William C. Harstad, seaman second class, stationed at the Great Lakes Naval training station, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton S. Harstad, 3618 Pierce Street. He will return to his station April 8 when he will be transferred to hospital service.

Private Arnold Marlowe Peterson is spending a 14-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Peterson, 2311 S. Lakeport Street. He is stationed at Kelly field, Texas.

Private Isadore Rich, son of Mrs. Sarah Rich, 719 Eighth Street and Private Lloyd S. Dybdahl, son of Mrs. Anna Dybdahl, 1422 Main Street are receiving basic training in the armored force replacement training center at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Ralph Richard Towns, son of R.L. Towns, 308 Court Street, recently was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army upon graduation from officer’s candidate school at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Mark V. Hughes, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark V. Hughes, 512 26th Street, and Donald E. O’Brien, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.J. O’Brien, 2509 Jones Street, have been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri to Superior State Teachers College at Superior, Wis., for precadet training in the army air forces.

Donald C. Campbell, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Campbell, 2109 Nebraska Street, has enlisted with the Kansas City naval aviation cadet selection board. He is a senior at Central High School. After graduation and when he becomes 18 years old, he will be transferred to class V-5 as a naval aviation cadet.

Private Lester M. Porter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester E. Porter, 1615 Hamilton Street, has completed basic training at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, and had been transferred to Oshkosh Teachers college at Oshkosh, Wis. He is a Central High School graduate.

Private Harold Moore, son of Mrs. Dorothy Moore, 4336 Springfield Street, is stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana, for basic army training.

Kenneth D. Speer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton E. Speer, 4005 Floyd Avenue; Lloyd E. Sease, son of Carl Sease, 406 S. Helen Street and John Melvin Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Foster Thompson, 3259 Nebraska Street, have arrived at Carroll College, Waukesha, Wis., for basic army air force instruction.

Lieut. Robert P. Henderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Henderson, 1306 26th Street, is spending a seven-day leave here. He has completed the aviation maintenance course at Yale University and has been assigned to duty at San Bernardino, Cal.

Sergeant Eugene V. Holscher, who is stationed in an armored division at Camp Campbell Kentucky, is spending a 10-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Florence Holscher, 410 Fifth Street.

Dick Barrett, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard M. Barrett, 2823 Summit Street, has been promoted from private to corporal at Camp Haan, California. Corporal Barrett is a Central High School graduate.

Fred H. DeWitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. DeWitt, 1637 Palmer Avenue, has been promoted from private to corporal at the field artillery replacement center at Fort Still, Oklahoma. He was inducted at Fort Crook, Nebraska, last October 15. Before entering the service he was a salesman.

Lawrence P. Heck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Heck, 2601 W. 19th street; Neil R. Grimsley, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Grimsley, 113 Bluff Street; Melvin E. Tadlock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emory B. Tadlock, 2516 Ridge Avenue; Gene C. Maun, son of Teresa V. Maun, and Grange W. Huff, son of Mrs. E.P. Kilker, 1612 Main Street, have been graduated from the Navy service school at Great Lakes, Illinois and are in line for promotion as third class petty officers. Heck specialized in aviation ordnance, Grimsley and Maun in radio, Tadlock in signal corps work, and Huff completed the course for torpedo men.

Stanley W. Keagle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Keagle, 2106 S. Patterson Street, as arrived at St. Mary’s College in California for a three-month preflight training course in naval aviation.

Edwin W. Hans, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hans, 1308 Court Street, an apprentice seaman, is now stationed at Camp Hill, Farragut, Idaho. Hans has two brothers, Albert, who has been in the Navy for nine years and William, a chief petty officer, who has served six years in the Navy.

Private Daniel V. Rickert, son of F.J. Rickert, 223 Webster building, is home on a 14-day furlough. He is stationed at Fort Mead, South Dakota.

Private Donald B. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.R. Smith, 2516 Center Street, in the army air corps at Patterson field, Fairfield, O., is home on a 10-day furlough visiting parents.

Dick Barrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Barrett, 2823 Summitt Street, has been promoted to the rank of Corporal. He is stationed at the headquarters battalion, personnel department, Camp Haan, California.

Bruce Karrer, seaman second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Karrer, 919 Pacific Street, is spending an 11-day leave with his parents. Upon his return to Farragut, Idaho, he will be assigned to sea duty.

Corporal Arnold D. Jacobs, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Jacobs, 2109 Hamilton Street, is stationed somewhere in North Africa, according to letters reaching his parents.

Lloyd Cobler, 607 Main Street, who is with the American forces somewhere in Africa, has been promoted to corporal.

Monte Colbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Colbert, 3220 Sixth Street, has been promoted to sergeant. He is serving as a crew chief in the army air force at Mitchell field, New York. A brother, Robert, is serving in the front lines in North Africa. A second brother, Norton, recently arrived at an overseas post. Mrs. Monte Colbert resides at 3311 Fourth Street.

Sheldon, Iowa – Dale R. Skewis of Sheldon recently graduated from the naval air technical training center at Norman, Okla., and was commissioned a third class petty officer.

Sheldon, Iowa - Caroll Woods of Sheldon, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Woods, has been promoted to junior instructor at the army air base at Lincoln, Neb.

Sheldon, Iowa – Phyllis Maxine Barnes, teacher in the public schools here was sworn in a member of the women’s reserve of the Marine Corps at Des Moines.

Cushing, Iowa—Robert Ohme, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer H. Ohme was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army April 6 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Accompanied by his bride, the former Miss Florence Walker of Sidney, Iowa, he is on leave at the home of his parents. He will be stationed at Camp Howze, Texas.

Washta, Iowa—Corporal Dwight Fisher is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Fisher. He is stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon. A brother, William Fisher, will leave soon for induction.

Anthon, Iowa—Private First Class John Franklin Taylor, son of Mrs. Minnie Taylor, has recently been graduated from gunnery school at Laredo army air field at Laredo, Texas. He is now stationed at Buckley field, Denver, Colorado, for further training for radio aerial gunnery in the army air forces.

Sheldon, Iowa—Wayne Smith of Sheldon who has been stationed with the army at Miami, Florida, is home on a short furlough on his way to the army technical school at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he is being transferred. He is visiting his wife and his mother, Mrs. Anna Smith, both of Sheldon.

Private Wayne Case, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Case, formerly of Sioux City and now of Tacoma. He is stationed at the army air force training center at Fresno, Cal.

Corporal Willard L. Toeppe has returned to Camp Butner, North Carolina, after spending a 10-day furlough here with his mother, Mrs. Rose Larsen, 3402 Peters Avenue.

Private John M. Darville, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Darville, 2003 S. St. Mary’s Street, has reported to Sheppard Field, Texas, for training.

Private William Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lena Meyers, 609 Bluff Street, is stationed at Buckley Field, Colo., where he is taking special gunner training.

Private Daniel Sullivan of Camp Shelby, Mississippi, is spending a 15–day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Sullivan, 4031 Division Street.

Maj. Kenneth M. Smith, son of Mrs. Ada Smith, 4103 Davis Avenue, is stationed at Galveston, Tex. Maj. And Mrs. Smith, the former Mildred Pangborn, are the parents of a daughter born April 6.

Warren E. True, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. True, 713 Wall Street, has been promoted to corporal and is stationed at Detroit, where he is attending a special course of instruction in gasoline engines. His brother, Jerome W. True, with the field artillery, is stationed at San Luis Obispo, Cal.

Private Vernon McLarty has been transferred to Texarkana, Tex. His brother, Private Orville McLarty, is stationed at Kearns Field, Utah, in the army air corps. Both are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McLarty, 2811 Second Street.

Private Elais Salem and Private Robert James Salem, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Salem, 1013 Jennings Street, are in service and another son expects to go soon. Elais recently completed a course in mechanics with the army air corps at Sheppard Field, Texas, Robert is in the medical corps at Camp Barkley, Texas, Donald Eugene 18, attending Trinity High School, expects to enter the service soon. Their father served in the army in World War I.

Corporal LeRoy C. Weigel has returned to his station with the ferrying command at Berry Field, Nashville, Tenn., after spending a short furlough with his wife, who resides at 614 Sioux Street.

Frank J. Bush, whose home was with his sister, Mrs. John Kosiba, 3015 Washington Street, has been promoted to corporal and assigned as a drill instructor at the army air force technical training base, Miami Beach, Fla.

John Milton, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fred Milton, 1303 W. Third Street, has reported for training at the naval training station, Farragut, Idaho.

Aviation Cadet Robert E. Lechtenberg, 515 Fifth Street, has reported at the navy preflight preparatory school at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, for a 12-week course of study.

Kenneth Keith Krogh, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Krogh of Sergeant Bluff, has arrived at Missouri State Teachers college at Springfield, Mo., for a five month course of army air force instruction prior to appointment as an aviation cadet.

Arthur J. Smith has arrived at the army air force technical training command post at Scott field, Illinois, where he will take a course in radio operating and mechanics. His wife, Ila M. Smith resides in Sioux City.

Arthur J. Smith has been promoted to private first class in the army air force technical training command at Scott field, Illinois. Mrs. Smith resides at 3614 Davis Avenue. Private Smith was inducted February 14, 1943 and received his basic training at St. Petersburg, Fla.

William J. Des Jarlais, son of Mrs. Josephine Des Jarlais, son of Mrs. Joseph Des Jarlais, 313 W Sixth Street, has completed an advanced course in the operation of diesel motors at the navy’s trade school at Brooklyn Village, O., from where he will return to duty at sea.

Milton O. Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Meyer, 1524 W. Sixth Street, is taking a course in signaling and the operation of navigation instructions at the navy school for signalmen at the University of Illinois at Urbana.

Eldred Saltwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Saltwell, 3632 Vine Avenue, is taking eight weeks of basic training at Fort Warren, Wyoming.

Our Neighbors in the Service

Sheldon, Iowa- Ralph Sigman of Sheldon is stationed with the signal corps in North Africa. His aunt in Sheldon received a letter from him this week in which he said he had not seen any Sheldon boys since leaving Northern Ireland for service in Africa.

Marathon, Iowa—Mr. and Mrs. William Kruse of Marathon have four sons in the army, they are Private First Class Eppo Kruse, who left in May 1941 and is now somewhere in North Africa; Private First Class George Kruse of Camp Hood, Texas; Private John Kruse, Fort Lewis, Washington and Private Peter Kruse of Fort Still, Oklahoma. John and Peter Kruse entered the service in December 1942.

Ashton, Iowa—Mr. and Mrs. James Rath of Ashton received word that their son, Private First Class Verne J. Rath has arrived safely in the southwest Pacific recently. His brother, Private First Class Kenneth W. Rath is stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Danbury, Iowa—Frank Treiber has been promoted from fireman first class to machinist mate second class at the naval air station at Corpus Christi, Texas. He is the son of Tony Treiber of Danbury.

Oto, Iowa—Private Jess L. Benton, Jr. and Private Ralph H. Benton, only sons of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Benton, Sr. of Oto, are in service. Jess is at the front in Africa and has been approved for officer candidate school. Ralph is in the army air corps at Kearns Field, Utah.

Rodney, Iowa—The purple heart medal has been awarded Darwin L. Clark, posthumously, missing in action since the action over Midway, June 4, 1942. The medal was sent to his father, Lawrence R. Clark. The flying cross was also sent to his father some time ago.

Carl T. Werling, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Werling, who was stationed at Camp Livingston, La., has been sent to Fort Ord, California.

H. Parker Nickolisen in the V-12 son of Mr. and Mrs. Huber Nickolisen graduated Sunday from the State University at Iowa City. He received his D.D.S. degree and was also commissioned a lieutenant, j. g. in the Navy.

Donald H. Kee, recently stationed at Camp Parks, Cal. Is now in New Guinea. His mother is Mrs. Isa Kee of Rodney. His wife, who was with him in California has now returned to their home in Rodney.

Hornick, Iowa—Ensign Edna Johnston of the navy nurses reserve, who has been stationed at the naval hospital at Oakland, California has been transferred to the naval hospital base at Pearl Harbor.

Hawarden, Iowa—Mrs. Harold Bergdale has received word from her husband, Capt. Harold G. Bergdale, that he has arrived safely in England.

Cushing, Iowa—Vernon K Stoneking and Loren Hefner apprentice seamen, are stationed at Camp Scott, Farragut, Idaho, for their boot training. Hefner is a son of Mrs. Alvena Hefner of Cushing. Stoneking’s wife and their sons, Doulas and Kenneth, live in Cushing.

Private Joe Stoneking has been transferred from Omaha to Sioux Falls.
