Efforts of the police department to clean up the city of suspicious characters—pickpockets, thieves, confidence men, gamblers, and others who usually collect where large crowds gather—had produced a large number of men and women to be brought before Police Judge Foster G. Iddings this morning.
A dozen persons, men and women, were arrested and held for investigation. The police had no definite charges to make, but made the arrests on “general principals.” There was thought to be enough evidence against five persons to warrant charges of vagrancy.
In addition to those arrested on charges of vagrancy and held for investigation, the police arrested nearly forty persons for intoxication.
In a single block in Fifth street, eight persons were arrested and held for investigation. They were: Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Dingman, Sadie Dingman, Nellie Shackleford, John Dingman, P. F. Dingman, Blanche Hughes and Elmer Dingman.
John Grace, 50 years old, employed at the Cudahy Packing plant, complained to the police that Nellie Shackleford had stolen $57 of his money, but no charge was placed against the woman. She denied the theft.
C. W. Brown, 23 years old, 215 Fifth street, was arrested last evening and is being held by the police for investigation. The police alleged last night that he had stolen a sweater.
