Written by Capt. John S. Lothrop:
My regiment was the Twenty-sixth Illinois infantry. Mrs. Lothrop and myself were married December 12, 1861. My company (E) was then on detached service guarding a bridge over Salt river on the Hannibal and St. Joe railway, Missouri. Mrs. Lothrop was with me there until February, 1862, when the company was ordered to join Pope on his campaign against New Madrid and Island 10. Mrs. Lothrop returning home, and that constituted her army service.
